Tomography of single-particle-resolved detectors is of primary importance for characterizing particle correlations with applications in quantum metrology, quantum simulation and quantum computing. However, it is a non-trivial task in practice due to the unavoidable presence of noise that affects the measurement but does not originate from the detector. In this work, we address this problem for a three-dimensional single-atom-resolved detector where shot-to-shot atom number fluctuations are a central issue to perform a quantum detector tomography. We overcome this difficulty by exploiting the parallel measurement of counting statistics in sub-volumes of the detector, from which we evaluate the effect of shot-to-shot fluctuations and perform a local tomography of the detector. In addition, we illustrate the validity of our method from applying it to Gaussian quantum states with different number statistics. Finally, we show that the response of Micro-Channel Plate detectors is well-described from using a binomial distribution with the detection efficiency as a single parameter.

Strongly correlated quantum matter -- such as interacting electron systems or interacting quantum fluids -- possesses properties that cannot be understood in terms of linear fluctuations and free quasi-particles. Quantum fluctuations in these systems are indeed large and generically exhibit non-Gaussian statistics -- a property captured only by inspecting high-order correlations, whose quantitative reconstruction poses a formidable challenge to both experiments and theory alike. A prime example of correlated quantum matter is the strongly interacting Bose fluid, realized by superfluid Helium and, more recently, ultra-cold atoms. Here, we experimentally study interacting Bose gases from the weakly to the strongly interacting regime through single-atom-resolved correlations in momentum space. We observe that the Bogoliubov pairing among modes of opposite momenta, emblematic of the weakly interacting regime, is suppressed as interactions become stronger. This departure from the predictions of Bogoliubov theory signals the onset of the strongly correlated regime, as confirmed by numerical simulations that highlight the role of non-linear quantum fluctuations in our system. Additionally, our measurements unveil a non-zero four-operator cumulant at even stronger interactions, which is a direct signature of non-Gaussian correlations. These results shed light on the emergence and physical origin of non-Gaussian correlations in ensembles of interacting bosons.

We report experimental measurements of the second-order coherence function $g^{(2)}(τ)$ of the light emitted by a laser-driven dense ensemble of $^{87}$Rb atoms. We observe a clear departure from the Siegert relation valid for Gaussian chaotic light. Measuring intensity and first-order coherence, we conclude that the violation is not due to the emergence of a coherent field. This indicates that the light obeys non-Gaussian statistics, stemming from non-Gaussian correlations in the atomic medium. More specifically, the steady-state of this driven-dissipative many-body system sustains high-order correlations in the absence of first-order coherence. These findings call for new theoretical and experimental explorations to uncover their origin and they open new perspectives for the realization of non-Gaussian states of light.

We study the full counting statistics (FCS) of quantum gases in samples of thousands of interacting bosons, detected atom-by-atom after a long free-fall expansion. In this far-field configuration, the FCS reveals the many-body coherence from which we characterize iconic states of interacting lattice bosons, by deducing the normalized correlations $g^{(n)}(0)$ up to the order $n=6$. In Mott insulators, we find a thermal FCS characterized by perfectly-contrasted correlations $g^{(n)}(0)= n!$. In interacting Bose superfluids, we observe small deviations to the Poisson FCS and to the ideal values $g^{(n)}(0)=1$ expected for a pure condensate. To describe these deviations, we introduce a heuristic model that includes an incoherent contribution attributed to the depletion of the condensate. The predictions of the model agree quantitatively with our measurements over a large range of interaction strengths, that includes the regime where the condensate is strongly depleted by interactions. These results suggest that the condensate component exhibits a full coherence $g^{(n)}(0) =1$ at any order $n$ up to $n=6$ and at arbitrary interaction strengths. The approach demonstrated here is readily extendable to characterize a large variety of interacting quantum states and phase transitions.

We measure the momentum density in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dilute spin impurities after an expansion in the presence of interactions. We observe tails decaying as $1/k^4$ at large momentum $k$ in the condensate and in the impurity cloud. These algebraic tails originate from the impurity-BEC interaction, but their amplitudes greatly exceed those expected from two-body contact interactions at equilibrium in the trap. Furthermore, in the absence of impurities, such algebraic tails are not found in the BEC density measured after the interaction-driven expansion. These results highlight the key role played by impurities when present, a possibility that had not been considered in our previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 235303 (2016)]. Our measurements suggest that these unexpected algebraic tails originate from the non-trivial dynamics of the expansion in the presence of impurity-bath interactions.

Quantum fluctuations play a central role in the properties of quantum matter. In non-interacting ensembles, they manifest as fluctuations of non-commuting observables, quantified by Heisenberg inequalities. In the presence of interactions, additional quantum fluctuations appear, from which many-body correlations and entanglement arise. In the context of many-body physics, the Bogoliubov theory provides us with an illuminating microscopic picture of how this occurs for weakly-interacting bosons, with the appearance of the quantum depletion formed by pairs of bosons with opposite momenta. Here, we report the observation of these atom pairs in the depletion of an equilibrium interacting Bose gas. A quantitative study of atom-atom correlations, both at opposite and close-by momenta, allows us to fully characterise the equilibrium many-body state. We show that the atom pairs share the properties of two-mode squeezed states, including relative number squeezing. Our results illustrate how interacting systems acquire non-trivial quantum correlations as a result of the interplay between quantum fluctuations and interactions

We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of the low-entropy Mott transition for interacting bosons trapped in a three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice -- namely, the interaction-induced superfluid-to-normal phase transition in the vicinity of the zero-temperature Mott transition. Our analysis relies on the measurement of the 3D momentum distribution, which allows us to extract the momentum-space density $ρ({\bf k}={\bf 0})$ at the center of the Brillouin zone. Upon varying the ratio between the interaction $U$ and the tunnelling energy $J$ across the superfluid transition, we observe that $ρ({\bf k}={\bf 0})$ exhibits a sharp transition at a value of $U/J$ consistent with the bulk prediction from quantum Monte Carlo. In addition, the variation of $ρ({\bf k}={\bf 0})$ with $U/J$ exhibits a critical behavior consistent with the expected 3D XY universality class. Our results show that the tomographic reconstruction of the momentum distribution of ultracold bosons can reveal traits of the critical behavior of the superfluid transition even in an inhomogeneous trapped system.

We present a joint experimental and theoretical analysis to assess the adiabatic experimental preparation of ultracold bosons in optical lattices aimed at simulating the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. Thermometry of lattice gases is realized from the superfluid to the Mott regime by combining the measurement of three-dimensional momentum-space densities with ab-initio quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of the same quantity. The measured temperatures across the superfluid-to-Mott transition are in agreement with isentropic lines reconstructed via QMC for the experimental parameters of interest, with a conserved entropy per particle of $S/N=0.8(1) k_{B}$. In addition, the Fisher information associated with this thermometry method shows that the latter is most accurate in the critical regime close to the Mott transition, as confirmed in the experiment. These results prove that equilibrium states of the Bose-Hubbard model - including those in the quantum-critical regime above the Mott transition - can be adiabatically prepared in cold-atom apparatus.

We investigate the position- and momentum-space two--body correlations in a weakly interacting, harmonically trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensed gas at low temperatures. The two-body correlations are computed within the Bogoliubov approximation and the peculiarities of the trapped gas are highlighted in contrast to the spatially homogeneous case. In the position space, we recover the anti-bunching induced by the repulsive inter-atomic interaction in the condensed fraction localized around the trap center and the bunching in the outer thermal cloud. In the momentum space, bunching signatures appear for either equal or opposite values of the momentum and display peculiar features as a function of the momentum and the temperature. In analogy to the optical Hanbury Brown and Twiss effect, the amplitude of the bunching signal at close-by momenta is fixed by the chaotic nature of the matter field state and its linewidth is shown to be set by the (inverse of the) finite spatial size of the associated in-trap momentum components. In contrast, the linewidth of the bunching signal at opposite-momenta is only determined by the condensate size.

The regime of large interactions and low temperatures is reached in a three-dimensional optical lattice and atom-atom correlations are extracted from the detection of individual metastable Helium atoms after a long free-fall. We observe a HBT bunching in the non-condensed fraction of the gas whose properties strongly deviate from the HBT signals expected for non-interacting bosons. In addition, we show that the measured correlations reflect the peculiar quantum statistics of atoms belonging to the quantum depletion and of the Bogoliubov phonons, i.e., of collective excitations of the many-body quantum state. Our results demonstrate that atom-atom correlations provide information about the quantum state of strongly-interacting particles, extending the interest of HBT-like experiments beyond the case of non-interacting particles.

We investigate two-body collisions occurring during the time-of-flight expansion of interacting three-dimensional lattice Bose superfluids. The number of collisions is extracted from the observed s-wave scattering halos located between the diffraction peaks of the superfluids. These faint halos can be monitored thanks to the large dynamical range in densities associated with detecting individual metastable Helium atoms. We monitor the number of collisions as a function of the total atom number and of the amplitude of the lattice, in a regime where the number of trapped atoms per lattice site is large. In addition, we introduce a classical model of collisions that quantitatively describes the experiment without adjustable parameters. Finally, the present work validates quantitatively the assumption of a ballistic expansion when investigating the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with a unity occupation of the lattice.

We report on the investigation of the three-dimensional single-atom-resolved distributions of bosonic Mott insulators in momentum-space. Firstly, we measure the two-body and three-body correlations deep in the Mott regime, finding a perfectly contrasted bunching whose periodicity reproduces the reciprocal lattice. In addition, we show that the two-body correlation length is inversely proportional to the in-trap size of the Mott state with a pre-factor in agreement with the prediction for an incoherent state occupying a uniformly filled lattice. Our findings indicate that the momentum-space correlations of a Mott insulator at small tunnelling is that of a many-body ground-state with Gaussian statistics. Secondly, in the Mott insulating regime with increasing tunnelling, we extract the spectral weight of the quasi-particles from the momentum density profiles. On approaching the transition towards a superfluid, the momentum spread of the spectral weight is found to decrease as a result of the increased mobility of the quasi-particles in the lattice. While the shapes of the observed spectral weight agree with the ones predicted by perturbative many-body calculations, the fitted mobilities are larger than the theoretical ones. This discrepancy is similar to that previously reported on the time-of-flight visibility.

Measuring the full distribution of individual particles is of fundamental importance to characterize many-body quantum systems through correlation functions at any order. Here we demonstrate the possibility to reconstruct the momentum-space distribution of three-dimensional interacting lattice gases atom-by-atom. This is achieved by detecting individual metastable Helium atoms in the far-field regime of expansion, when released from an optical lattice. We benchmark our technique with Quantum Monte-Carlo calculations, demonstrating the ability to resolve momentum distributions of superfluids occupying $10^5$ lattice sites. It permits a direct measure of the condensed fraction across phase transitions, as we illustrate on the superfluid-to-normal transition. We make measurements of atomic temperatures, magneto-optical trap sizes, and the sensitivity of optical molasses to a power imbalance in the laser beams, finding excellent agreement with the Doppler theory. We show that the special properties of Helium, particularly its small mass and narrow transition linewidth, prevent effective sub-Doppler cooling with red-detuned optical molasses.

Interactions are known to have dramatic effects on bosonic gases in one dimension (1D). Not only does the ground state transform from a condensate-like state to an effective Fermi sea, but new fundamental excitations, which do not have any higher-dimensional equivalents, are predicted to appear. In this work, we trace these elusive excitations via their effects on the dynamical structure factor of 1D strongly-interacting Bose gases at low temperature. An array of 1D Bose gases is obtained by loading a $^{87}$Rb condensate in a 2D lattice potential. The dynamical structure factor of the system is probed by energy deposition through low-momentum Bragg excitations. The experimental signals are compared to recent theoretical predictions for the dynamical structure factor of the Lieb-Liniger model at $T > 0$. Our results demonstrate that the main contribution to the spectral widths stems from the dynamics of the interaction-induced excitations in the gas, which cannot be described by the Luttinger liquid theory.

We investigate the eff ects of the gold coating and that of introducing an interplate voltage between the spatially separated plates. We fi nd that the gold coating increases the count rate of the detector and the pulse amplitude as previously reported for non-spatially resolved setups. The interplate voltage also increases count rates. In addition, we nd that a non-zero interplate voltage improves the spatial accuracy in determining the arrival position of incoming single particles (by 20%) while the gold coating has a negative e ect (by 30%).

Using a theoretical analysis of the Bragg excitation scheme we show that the spectrum of inter-band transitions holds information on the single-particle Green's function of the insulator. In particular the existence of particle-hole coherence due to quantum fluctuations in the Mott state is clearly seen in the Bragg spectra and quantified. Finally we propose a scheme to directly measure the full, momentum resolved spectral function as obtained in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of solids.

The experimental setup and procedure to probe the atomic Mott states are presented in detail. We discuss the link between the energy absorbed by the gases and accessible experimental parameters as well as the linearity of the response to the scattering of light. We investigate the excitations of the system in multiple energy bands and a band-mapping technique allows us to identify band and momentum of the excited atoms. In addition the momentum distribution in the Mott states which is spread over the entire first Brillouin zone enables us to reconstruct the dispersion relation in the high energy bands using a single Bragg excitation with a fixed momentum transfer.

By means of Bragg spectroscopy we probe the band structure of the excitation spectrum in the presence of the periodic potential. We selectively induce elementary excitations of the BEC choosing the transferred momentum and we observe different resonances in the energy transfer, corresponding to the transitions to different bands. The frequency, the width and the strength of these resonances are investigated as a function of the amplitude of the 1D optical lattice.

We report the observation of exponential localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) released into a one-dimensional waveguide in the presence of a controlled disorder created by laser speckle . We operate in a regime allowing AL: i) weak disorder such that localization results from many quantum reflections of small amplitude; ii) atomic density small enough that interactions are negligible. We image directly the atomic density profiles vs time, and find that weak disorder can lead to the stopping of the expansion and to the formation of a stationary exponentially localized wave function, a direct signature of AL. Fitting the exponential wings, we extract the localization length, and compare it to theoretical calculations. Moreover we show that, in our one-dimensional speckle potentials whose noise spectrum has a high spatial frequency cut-off, exponential localization occurs only when the de Broglie wavelengths of the atoms in the expanding BEC are larger than an effective mobility edge corresponding to that cut-off. In the opposite case, we find that the density profiles decay algebraically, as predicted in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 210401 (2007)]. The method presented here can be extended to localization of atomic quantum gases in higher dimensions, and with controlled interactions.

We theoretically investigate the localization of an expanding Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atom-atom interactions in a disordered potential. We focus on the regime where the initial inter-atomic interactions dominate over the kinetic energy and the disorder. At equilibrium in a trapping potential and for small disorder, the condensate shows a Thomas-Fermi shape modified by the disorder. When the condensate is released from the trap, a strong suppression of the expansion is obtained in contrast to the situation in a periodic potential with similar characteristics. This effect crucially depends on both the momentum distribution of the expanding BEC and the strength of the disorder. For strong disorder, the suppression of the expansion results from the fragmentation of the core of the condensate and from classical reflections from large modulations of the disordered potential in the tails of the condensate. We identify the corresponding disorder-induced trapping scenario for which large atom-atom interactions and strong reflections from single modulations of the disordered potential play central roles. For weak disorder, the suppression of the expansion signals the onset of Anderson localization, which is due to multiple scattering from the modulations of the disordered potential. We compute analytically the localized density profile of the condensate and show that the localization crucially depends on the correlation function of the disorder. In particular, for speckle potentials the long-range correlations induce an effective mobility edge in 1D finite systems. Numerical calculations performed in the mean-field approximation support our analysis for both strong and weak disorder.

We derive analytically the Lyapunov exponent as a function of the quasiparticle momentum k and we study the localization maximum k_{max}. For 1D speckle potentials, we find that k_{max} is proportional to 1/ξwhen ξis much larger than σ_R while k_{max} is proportional to 1/σ_R when ξis much smaller than σ_R, and that the localization is strongest when ξis of the order of σ_R. Numerical calculations support our analysis and our estimates indicate that the localization of the Bogolyubov quasiparticles is accessible in current experiments with ultracold atoms.
