The transitional state of ordering in the long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure in Mg-Al-Gd alloy has been investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy. It is found that the domains are the origin of observed transitional state. Three new patterns of clusters at this state can be fully explained by the superimposition of L12 type clusters located in different domains. The domains are further verified by different tilted views. Growth of preferred domains during ageing process will result in final ordered LPSO structure. Based on the idea of domains, less ordered LPSO structure in other dilute alloys can be also understood.

Cooperative growth of the structure units (SUs) in a 14H type long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure has been observed, and there is no obvious accumulation of transformation strain at the growth fronts. The atomic structures at this front are further characterized by Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, and the partial dislocations associated SUs are uniquely defined based on the observations at different zone axes. It is found that the Burgers vectors of neighbouring partials are alternatively opposed so that the transformation strain is self-accommodated. Furthermore, this self-accommodation mechanism is rationalized by the elastic interaction energy for combinations of different partials.

Multi-principal-element metallic alloys have created a growing interest that is unprecedented in metallurgical history, in exploring the property limits of metals and the governing physical mechanisms. Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) have drawn particular attention due to their (i) high melting points and excellent softening-resistance, which are the two key requirements for high-temperature applications; and (ii) compositional space, which is immense even after considering cost and recyclability restrictions. However, RHEAs also exhibit intrinsic brittleness and oxidation-susceptibility, which remain as significant challenges for their processing and application. Here, utilizing natural-mixing characteristics amongst refractory elements, we designed a Ti38V15Nb23Hf24 RHEA that exhibits >20% tensile ductility already at the as-cast state, and physicochemical stability at high-temperatures. Exploring the underlying deformation mechanisms across multiple length-scales, we observe that a rare beta prime precipitation strengthening mechanism governs its intriguing mechanical response. These results also reveal the effectiveness of natural-mixing tendencies in expediting HEA discovery.

The chemical enrichment/ordering of solute atoms in Mg matrix are crucial to understand the formation mechanism of long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structures. In this study, three-dimensional distribution of solute elements in an Mg-Zn-Gd alloy during ageing process is quantitatively characterized by three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP) tomography. Based on the radius distribution function, it is found that Zn-Gd solute pairs in Mg matrix appear mainly in two peaks at early stage of ageing and the separation distance between Zn and Gd atoms is well rationalized by the first-principles calculation. Moreover, the fraction of Zn-Gd solute pairs increases first and decreases subsequently due to the precipitation of LPSO structures. Moreover, the composition of structural unit in LPSO structure and the solute enrichment around it are quantified. It is found that Zn and Gd elements are synchronized in the LPSO structure, and solute segregation of pure Zn or Gd is not observed at the transformation front of the LPSO structure in this alloy. In addition, the crystallography of transformation front is further determined by 3DAP data.

In a recent paper, Zhang et al. [Acta Materialia 152 (2018) 96] studied the in-plane ordering of the long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure in Mg-Al-Y alloys. In addition to the well-known L12 type building cluster, they proposed three new types of metastable building clusters. In addition, the experimental evidence for domain structures in a similar alloy system Mg-Al-Gd is provided.

In this work, the planar segregation in Mg-Al-Gd alloy is characterized by high angle annular dark field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP). It is found there is no planar fault accompanying the segregation, and the spatial distribution of segregation may resemble the periodicity of LPSO structure. The segregation is further quantified by 3DAP, and it mainly enriches with Gd atoms. The segregation behaviour is rationalized by First-Principles calculation.

The atomic structure of Guinier-Preston (G.P.) zone in an Mg-Zn-Gd alloy has been determined by combining atomic resolution high angle annular dark field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and first-principles calculation. The G.P. Zone consists of three atomic layers paralleling to (0001) plane of Mg matrix, where two outer layers enrich with Gd while the middle layer enriches with Zn. Moreover, it is found that most of the structures reported previously are unstable and should converge to the present result after atomic relaxation, even though the atomic species and positions in the middle layer vary in those models.

The composition, crystal structure and precipitation crystallography of a newly found precipitate are characterized by a Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The composition of the plate-like precipitate could be expressed as MgxAl2-xGd (x = 0.38), and its crystal structure is the same as the fcc type Laves phases Mg2Gd and Al2Gd with the lattice parameter of 7.92 Angstrom (space group No. 227, Fd-3m). The orientation relationship between the matrix and precipitate is found to be (0001)m // (111)p and [10-10]m // [1-10]p, and the habit plane is parallel to (0001)m // (111)p plane. In addition, this preferred crystallography of phase transformation is well explained based on the atomic matching in the interface.
