The insulating magnetic pyrochlore Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ has attracted much attention as a quantum spin ice candidate with dipole-octupole character that permits spin ice phases based not only on magnetic dipole moments but also allows for even-more-exotic octupole-based spin ice phases. This work reports low-temperature neutron diffraction measurements on single crystal Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ with $Q$-coverage both at low $Q$ where the magnetic form factor for dipoles is near maximal and at high $Q$ covering the region where the magnetic form factor for Ce$^{3+}$ octupoles is near maximal. This study was motivated by recent powder neutron diffraction studies of other Ce-based dipole-octupole pyrochlores, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ and Ce$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$, which each showed temperature-dependent diffuse diffraction at high $Q$ that was interpreted as arising from octupolar correlations. Our measurements use an optimized single crystal diffuse scattering instrument that allows us to screen against strong single crystal Bragg scattering in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. The temperature-difference neutron diffraction reveals a low-$Q$ peak consistent with dipolar spin ice correlations. For larger $Q$, the temperature-difference neutron diffraction shows an alternation between positive and negative net intensity. These features are qualitatively consistent with the corresponding numerical-linked-cluster (NLC) calculations using pseudospin interaction parameters reported for Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, or Ce$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$. Importantly, neither the measured data nor any of the NLC calculations show increased scattering at high $Q$ resulting from octupolar correlations. We conclude that at the lowest attainable temperatures for our measurement ($T = 0.05$ K), octupolar correlations are not present in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ on the level of our observation threshold of $\sim$ 0.1$\%$ of the low-$Q$ dipole scattering.

The parallel stripe phase is remarkable both in its own right, and in relation to the other phases it co-exists with. Its inhomogeneous nature makes such states susceptible to random fields from quenched magnetic vacancies. We argue this is the case by introducing low concentrations of nonmagnetic Zn impurities (0-10%) into La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (Nd-LSCO) with $x$ = 0.125 in single crystal form, well below the percolation threshold of $\sim$ 41% for two-dimensional (2D) square lattice. Elastic neutron scattering measurements on these crystals show clear magnetic quasi-Bragg peaks at all Zn dopings. While all the Zn-doped crystals display order parameters that merge into each other and the background at $\sim$ 68 K, the temperature dependence of the order parameter as a function of Zn concentration is drastically different. This result is consistent with meandering charge stripes within the parallel stripe phase, which are pinned in the presence of quenched magnetic vacancies. In turn it implies vacancies that preferentially occupy sites within the charge stripes, and hence that can be very effective at disrupting superconductivity in Nd-LSCO ($x$ = 0.125), and, by extension, in all systems exhibiting parallel stripes.

The Ce$^{3+}$ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ possess both dipolar and octupolar character which enables the possibility of novel quantum spin liquid ground states in this material. Here we report new muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on single crystal samples of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in zero magnetic field and in magnetic fields directed along the $[1,\bar{1},0]$ and $[1,1,1]$ crystallographic directions, and for magnetic fields directed both longitudinal and transverse to the direction of muon polarization. Our zero-field results show no signs of magnetic ordering or spin freezing, consistent with earlier zero-field $μ$SR measurements on a powder sample of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, and also with the expectations for a quantum spin ice. However, we measure a more gentle relaxation rate for Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in zero-field at low temperatures than was previously reported. This difference in relaxation rate is likely due to the low oxidation, and correspondingly, the high stoichiometry of our single crystal samples. Longitudinal field measurements confirm that the magnetic dipole moments in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ remain dynamic at $T = 0.1$ $\mathrm{K}$. For both $[1,\bar{1},0]$ and $[1,1,1]$ magnetic fields, our $μ$SR Knight shift measurements show a field-induced leveling off of the magnetic susceptibility at low temperature which is qualitatively consistent with corresponding calculations using the numerical-linked-cluster method in combination with recent estimates for the nearest-neighbour exchange parameters of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$.

We report new heat capacity measurements on single crystal Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ down to $\sim$ 0.1 K in a magnetic field along the $[1,\bar{1}, 0]$ direction. These new measurements show that the broad hump in the zero-field heat capacity moves higher in temperature with increasing field strength and is split into two humps by the $[1,\bar{1}, 0]$ field at $\sim$ 2 T. These separate features are due to the decomposition of the pyrochlore lattice into effectively decoupled chains for fields in this direction: one set of chains ($α$-chains) is polarized by the field while the other ($β$-chains) remains free. Our theoretical modelling suggests that the $β$-chains are close to a critical state, with nearly-gapless excitations. We also report new elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystal Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in $[1, \bar{1}, 0]$ and $[0, 0, 1]$ magnetic fields at temperatures down to 0.03 K. The elastic scattering behaves consistently with the formation of independent chains for a $[1, \bar{1}, 0]$ field, while the $[0, 0, 1]$ field produces a single field-induced magnetic Bragg peak at $(0, 2, 0)$ and equivalent wavevectors, indicating a polarized spin ice for fields above $\sim$ 3 T. For both $[1, \bar{1}, 0]$ and $[0, 0, 1]$ fields, our inelastic neutron scattering results show an approximately-dispersionless continuum of scattering that increases in both energy and intensity with increasing field strength. By modelling the complete set of experimental data using numerical linked cluster and semiclassical molecular dynamics calculations, we demonstrate the dominantly multipolar nature of the exchange interactions in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ and the smallness of the parameter $θ$ which controls the mixing between dipolar and octupolar degrees of freedom. These results support previous estimates of the microscopic exchange parameters.

The magnetism of the rock-salt $fcc$ rare-earth monopnictide HoBi, a candidate topological material with extreme magnetoresistance, is investigated. From the Ho$^{3+}$ non-Kramers $J$=8 spin-orbital multiplet, the cubic crystal electric field yields six nearly degenerate low-energy levels. These constitute an anisotropic magnetic moment with a Jahn-Teller-like coupling to the lattice. In the cubic phase for $T>T_N~=~5.72(1)~K$, the paramagnetic neutron scattering is centered at $\mathbf{k}=(\frac{1}{2}\frac{1}{2}\frac{1}{2})$ and was fit to dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between Ho spins separated by $\{100\}$ and ferromagnetic interactions between spins displaced by $\{\frac{1}{2}\frac{1}{2}0\}$. For $T<T_N$, a type-II AFM long-range order with $\mathbf{k}=(\frac{1}{2}\frac{1}{2}\frac{1}{2})$ develops along with a tetragonal lattice distortion. While neutron diffraction from a multi-domain sample cannot unambiguously determine the spin orientation within a domain, the bulk magnetization, structural distortion, and our measurements of the magnetic excitations all show the easy axis coincides with the tetragonal axis. The weakly dispersive excitons for $T<T_N$ can be accounted for by a spin Hamiltonian that includes the crystal electric field and exchange interactions within the Random Phase Approximation.

New single crystals and powders of Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, synthesized by hydrothermal techniques, present an opportunity for a new characterization of the exchange parameters in Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ using the near-neighbor $XYZ$ model Hamiltonian associated with DO pyrochlores. Utilizing quantum numerical linked cluster expansion fits to heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, and classical Monte Carlo calculations to the diffuse neutron diffraction of the new hydrothermally grown Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ samples, we place Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$'s ground state within the ordered dipolar all-in-all-out (AIAO) Néel phase, with quantum Monte Carlo calculations showing a transition to long-range order at temperatures below those accessed experimentally. Indeed, our new neutron diffraction measurements on the hydrothermally grown Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ powders show a broad signal at low scattering wave vectors, reminiscent of a \textit{dipolar} spin ice, in striking contrast from previous powder neutron diffraction on samples grown from solid-state synthesis, which found diffuse scattering at high scattering wave vectors associated with magnetic {\it octupoles} and suggested an octupolar quantum spin ice state. We conclude that new hydrothermally grown Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ samples host a finite-temperature proximate dipolar spin ice phase, above the expected transition to AIAO Néel order.

In his comment [arXiv:2209.03235], S. W. Lovesey argues that our analysis of neutron scattering experiments performed on Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ is invalid. Lovesey argues that we have not properly accounted for the higher-order multipolar contributions to the magnetic scattering and that our use of pseudospin-$1/2$ operators to describe the scattering is inappropriate. In this reply, we show that the multipolar corrections discussed by Lovesey only become significant at scattering wavevectors exceeding those accessed in our experiments. This in no way contradicts or undermines our work, which never claimed a direct observation of scattering from higher-order multipoles. We further show that Lovesey's objections to our use of pseudospins are unfounded, and that the pseudospin operators are able to describe all magnetic scattering processes at the energy scale of our experiments, far below the crystal field gap. Finally, we comment on certain assumptions in Lovesey's calculations of the scattering amplitude which are inconsistent with experiment.

A quantum critical point in the single layer, hole-doped cuprate system La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (Nd-LSCO), near $x$ = 0.23 has been proposed as an organizing principle for understanding high temperature superconductivity. Our earlier neutron diffraction work on Nd-LSCO at optimal and high doping revealed static parallel spin stripes to exist out to the QCP and slightly beyond, at $x$ = 0.24 and 0.26. We examine more closely the parallel spin stripe order parameter in Nd-LSCO in both zero magnetic field and fields up to 8 T for H // c in these single crystals. In contrast to earlier studies at lower doping, we observe that H //c in excess of $\sim$ 2.5 T eliminates the incommensurate quasi-Bragg peaks associated with parallel spin stripes. But this elastic scattering is not destroyed by the field; rather it is transferred to commensurate {\textbf{Q} = 0} Bragg positions, implying that the spins participating in the spin stripes have been polarized. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements at high fields show an increase in the low energy, parallel spin stripe fluctuations and evidence for a spin gap, $Δ_{spin}$= 3 $\pm$ 0.5 meV for Nd-LSCO with $x$ = 0.24. This is shown to be consistent with spin gap measurements as a function of superconducting T$_C$ over five different families of cuprate superconductors, which follow the approximate linear relation, $Δ_{spin}$ = 3.5 k$_B$T$_C$.

The phase diagram of the kagome metal family \ch{AV3Sb5} (A = K, Rb, Cs) features both superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) instabilities, which have generated tremendous recent attention. Nonetheless, significant questions remain. In particular, the temperature evolution and demise of the CDW state has not been extensively studied, and little is known about the co-existence of the CDW with superconductivity at low temperatures. We report an x-ray scattering study of \ch{CsV3Sb5} over a broad range of temperatures from 300 K to $\sim$ 2 K, below the onset of its superconductivity at $\textit{T}_\text{c}\sim$ 2.9 K. Order parameter measurements of the $2\times2\times2$ CDW structure show an unusual and extended linear temperature dependence onsetting at $T^*$ $\sim$ 160 K, much higher than the susceptibility anomaly associated with CDW order at $\textit{T}_\text{CDW}=94$ K. This implies strong CDW fluctuations exist to $\sim1.7\times\textit{T}_\text{CDW}$. The CDW order parameter is observed to be constant from $T=16$ K to 2 K, implying that the CDW and superconducting order co-exist below $\textit{T}_\text{c}$, and, at ambient pressure, any possible competition between the two order parameters is manifested at temperatures well below $\textit{T}_\text{c}$, if at all. Anomalies in the temperature dependence in the lattice parameters coincide with $\textit{T}_\text{CDW}$ for $\textit{c}(T)$ and with $T^*$ for $a(T)$.

We have carried out new neutron spectroscopic measurements on single crystals of La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ from 0.12 to 0.26 using time-of-flight techniques. These measurements allow us to follow the evolution of parallel spin stripe fluctuations with energies less than 33 meV, from x=0.12 to 0.26. Samples at these hole-doping levels are known to display static (on the neutron scattering time scale) parallel spin stripes at low temperature, with onset temperatures and intensities which decrease rapidly with increasing x. Nonetheless, we report remarkably similar dynamic spectral weight for the corresponding dynamic parallel spin stripes, between 5 meV to 33 meV, from the 1/8 anomaly near x=0.12, to optimal doping near x=0.19 to the quantum critical point for the pseudogap phase near x=0.24, and finally to the approximate end of superconductivity near x=0.26. This observed dynamic magnetic spectral weight is structured in energy with a peak near 17 meV at all dopings studied. Earlier neutron and resonant x-ray scattering measurements on related cuprate superconductors have reported both a disappearance with increasing doping of magnetic fluctuations at ($π$, $π$) wavevectors characterizing parallel spin stripe structures, and persistant paramagnon scattering away from this wavevector, respectively. Our new results on La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ from 0.12 < x <0.26 clearly show persistent parallel spin stripe fluctuations at and around at ($π$, $π$), and across the full range of doping studied. These results are also compared to recent theory. Together with a rapidly declining x-dependence to the static parallel spin stripe order, the persistent parallel spin stripe fluctuations show a remarkable similarity to the expectations of a quantum spin glass, random t-J model, recently introduced to describe strong local correlations in cuprates.

The Ce$^{3+}$ pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ degrees of freedom in the pyrochlore magnet Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ are known to possess dipole-octupole (DO) character, making it a candidate for novel quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground states at low temperatures. We report new polarized neutron diffraction at low temperatures, as well as heat capacity ($C_p$) measurements on single crystal Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. The former bears both similarities and differences from that measured in the canonical dipolar spin ice compound Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, while the latter rises sharply at low temperatures, initially plateauing near 0.08 K, before falling off towards a high temperature zero beyond 3 K. Above $\sim$0.5 K, the $C_p$ data set can be fit to the results of a quantum numerical linked cluster (NLC) calculation, carried out to 4$^{\mathrm{th}}$ order, that allows estimates for the terms in the near-neighbour XYZ Hamiltonian expected for such DO pyrochlore systems. Fits of the same theory to the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and unpolarized neutron scattering complement this analysis. A comparison between the resulting best fit NLC calculation and the polarized neutron diffraction shows both agreement and discrepancies, mostly in the form of zone-boundary diffuse scattering in the non-spin flip channel, which are attributed to interactions beyond near-neighbours. The lack of an observed thermodynamic anomaly and the constraints on the near-neighbour XYZ Hamiltonian suggest that Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ realizes a U(1)$_π$ QSL state at low temperatures, and one that likely resides near the boundary between dipolar and octupolar character.

During the last decade, translational and rotational symmetry-breaking phases -- density wave order and electronic nematicity -- have been established as generic and distinct features of many correlated electron systems, including pnictide and cuprate superconductors. However, in cuprates, the relationship between these electronic symmetry-breaking phases and the enigmatic pseudogap phase remains unclear. Here, we employ resonant x-ray scattering in a cuprate high-temperature superconductor La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (Nd-LSCO) to navigate the cuprate phase diagram, probing the relationship between electronic nematicity of the Cu 3$d$ orbitals, charge order, and the pseudogap phase as a function of doping. We find evidence for a considerable decrease in electronic nematicity beyond the pseudogap phase, either by raising the temperature through the pseudogap onset temperature $T^{*}$ or increasing doping through the pseudogap critical point, $p^{*}$. These results establish a clear link between electronic nematicity, the pseudogap, and its associated quantum criticality in overdoped cuprates. Our findings anticipate that electronic nematicity may play a larger role in understanding the cuprate phase diagram than previously recognized, possibly having a crucial role in the phenomenology of the pseudogap phase.

The Seebeck coefficient (thermopower) $S$ of the cuprate superconductor La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ was measured across its doping phase diagram (from $p = 0.12$ to $p = 0.25$), at various temperatures down to $T \simeq 2$ K, in the normal state accessed by suppressing superconductivity with a magnetic field up to $H = 37.5$ T. The magnitude of $S/T$ in the $T=0$ limit is found to suddenly increase, by a factor $\simeq 5$, when the doping is reduced below $p^{\star} = 0.23$, the critical doping for the onset of the pseudogap phase. This confirms that the pseudogap phase causes a large reduction of the carrier density $n$, consistent with a drop from $n = 1 + p$ above $p^{\star}$ to $n = p$ below $p^{\star}$, as previously inferred from measurements of the Hall coefficient, resistivity and thermal conductivity. When the doping is reduced below $p = 0.19$, a qualitative change is observed whereby $S/T$ decreases as $T \to 0$, eventually to reach negative values at $T=0$. In prior work on other cuprates, negative values of $S/T$ at $T \to 0$ were shown to result from a reconstruction of the Fermi surface caused by charge-density-wave (CDW) order. We therefore identify $p_{\rm CDW} \simeq 0.19$ as the critical doping beyond which there is no CDW-induced Fermi surface reconstruction. The fact that $p_{\rm CDW}$ is well separated from $p^{\star}$ reveals that there is a doping range below $p^{\star}$ where the transport signatures of the pseudogap phase are unaffected by CDW correlations, as previously found in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$.

The electronic structure of LiNiO$_2$, a promising Li-ion battery cathode material, has remained a challenge to understand due to its highly covalent yet correlated nature. Here we elucidate the electronic structure in LiNiO$_2$ and the related compound NaNiO$_2$ using x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and quantum many-body calculations. Notably, we use inverse partial fluorescence yield to correctly measure the Ni $L$-edge XAS, which is inaccurate using conventional methods. We show that the XAS are indicative of a strong Jahn-Teller effect in NaNiO$_2$ and a bond disproportionated state in LiNiO$_2$, supporting a theory of a high-entropy, glassy disproportionated state that stabilizes charging cycles in LiNiO$_2$.

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the pyrochlore Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$, an exemplary realization of a material whose properties are dominated by competition between magnetic dipolar and electric quadrupolar correlations. The dipolar and quadrupolar correlations evolve over three distinct regimes that we characterize via heat capacity, elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. In the first regime, above $T^*=1.1$ K, significant quadrupolar correlations lead to an intense inelastic mode that cannot be accounted for within a scenario with solely magnetic dipole-dipole correlations. The onset of extended dipole correlations occurs in the intermediate regime, between $T^*=1.1$ K and $T_c = 0.25$ K, with the formation of a collective paramagnetic state characterized by extended ferromagnetic canted spin ice domains. Here, long-range order is impeded not only by the usual frustration operating in classical spin ice systems, but also by a competition between dipolar and quadrupolar correlations. Finally, in the lowest temperature regime, below $T_c=0.25$ K, there is an abrupt and significant increase in the dipole ordered moment. The majority of the ordered moment remains tied up in the ferromagnetic spin ice-like state, but an additional $\mathbf{k}=(0,0,1)$ antiferromagnetic order parameter also develops. Simultaneously, the spectral weight of the inelastic mode, which is a proxy for the quadrupolar correlations, is observed to drop, indicating that dipole order ultimately wins out. Tb$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ is therefore a remarkable platform to study intertwined dipolar and quadrupolar correlations in a magnetically frustrated system and provides important insights into the physics of the whole family of terbium pyrochlores.

Quasi-two dimensional quantum magnetism is clearly highly correlated with superconducting ground states in cuprate-based High T$_c$ superconductivity. Three dimensional, commensurate long range magnetic order in La$_2$CuO$_4$ quickly evolves to quasi-two dimensional, incommensurate correlations on doping with mobile holes, and superconducting ground states follow for x as small as 0.05 in the La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$/Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ family of superconductors. It has long been known that the onset of superconducting ground states in these systems is coincident with a remarkable rotation of the incommensurate spin order from "diagonal stripes" below x = 0.05, to "parallel stripes" above. However, little is known about the spin correlations at optimal and high doping levels, where the dome of superconductivity draws to an end. Here we present new elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with x = 0.125, 0.19, 0.24 and 0.26, and show that two dimensional, quasi-static, parallel spin stripes are observed to onset at temperatures such that the parallel spin stripe phase envelopes all superconducting ground states in this system. Parallel spin stripes stretch across 0.05 < < 0.26, with rapidly decreasing moment size and onset temperatures for x > 0.125. We also show that the low energy, parallel spin stripe fluctuations for optimally doped x = 0.19 display dynamic spectral weight which grows with decreasing temperature and saturates below its superconducting T$_c$. The elastic order parameter for x = 0.19 also shows plateau behavior coincident with the onset of superconductivity. This set of observations assert the foundational role played by two dimensional parallel spin stripe order and fluctuations in High T$_c$ cuprate superconductivity.

One branch of the La-214 family of cuprate superconductors, La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 (Nd-LSCO), has been of significant and sustained interest, in large part because it displays the full complexity of the phase diagram for canonical hole-doped, high Tc superconductivity, while also displaying relatively low superconducting critical temperatures. The low superconducting Tc's imply that experimentally accessible magnetic fields can suppress the superconductivity to zero temperature. In particular, this has enabled various transport and thermodynamic studies of the T = 0 ground state in Nd-LSCO, free of superconductivity, across the critical doping p* = 0.23 where the pseudogap phase ends. The strong dependence of its superconducting properties on its crystal symmetry has itself motivated careful studies of the Nd-LSCO structural phase diagram. This paper provides a systematic study and summary of the materials preparation and characterization of both single crystal and polycrystalline samples of Nd-LSCO. Single-phase polycrystalline samples with x spanning the range from 0.01 to 0.40 have been synthesized, and large single crystals of Nd-LSCO for select x across the region (0.07, 0.12, 0.17, 0.19, 0.225, 0.24, and 0.26) were grown by the optical floating zone method. Systematic neutron and X-ray diffraction studies on these samples were performed at both low and room temperatures, 10 K and 300 K, respectively. These studies allowed us to follow the various structural phase transitions and propose an updated structural phase diagram for Nd-LSCO. In particular, we found that the low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase ends at a critical doping pLTT = 0.255(5), clearly separated from p*.

Quantum magnets with spin $J=2$, which arise in spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators, can potentially display multipolar orders. We carry out an exact diagonalization study of a simple octahedral crystal field Hamiltonian for two electrons, incorporating spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and interactions, finding that either explicitly including the $e_g$ orbitals, or going beyond the rotationally invariant Coulomb interaction within the $t_{2g}$ sector, causes a degeneracy breaking of the $J\!=\!2$ level degeneracy. This can lead to a low-lying non-Kramers doublet carrying quadrupolar and octupolar moments and an excited triplet which supports magnetic dipole moments, bolstering our previous phenomenological proposal for the stabilization of ferro-octupolar order in heavy transition metal oxides. We show that the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking due to ferro-octupolar ordering within the non-Kramers doublet leads to electronic orbital loop currents. The resulting internal magnetic fields can potentially explain the small fields inferred from muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments on cubic $5d^2$ osmate double perovskites Ba$_2$ZnOsO$_6$, Ba$_2$CaOsO$_6$, and Ba$_2$MgOsO$_6$, which were previously attributed to weak dipolar magnetism. We make further predictions for oxygen NMR experiments on these materials. We also study the reversed level scheme, where the $J\!=\!2$ multiplet splits into a low-lying magnetic triplet and excited non-Kramers doublet, presenting single-ion results for the magnetic susceptibility in this case, and pointing out its possible relevance for the rhenate Ba$_2$YReO$_6$. Our work highlights the intimate connection between the physics of heavy transition metal oxides and that of $f$-electron based heavy fermion compounds.

These cubic materials are all described by antiferromagnetically-coupled 5$d^2$ Os$^{6+}$ ions decorating a face-centred cubic (FCC) lattice. They all exhibit thermodynamic anomalies consistent with phase transitions at a temperature $T^*$, and exhibit a gapped magnetic excitation spectrum with spectral weight concentrated at wavevectors typical of type I antiferromagnetic orders. While muon spin resonance experiments show clear evidence for time reversal symmetry breaking, no corresponding magnetic Bragg scattering is observed at low temperatures. These results, consistent with low temperature octupolar or quadrupolar order, are discussed in the context of other 5$d^2$ DP magnets, and theories for $d^2$ ions on a FCC lattice which predict exotic orders driven by multipolar interactions.

Motivated by experimental and theoretical interest in realizing multipolar orders in $d$-orbital materials, we discuss the quantum magnetism of $J\!=\!2$ ions which can be realized in spin-orbit coupled oxides with $5d^2$ transition metal ions. Based on the crystal field environment, we argue for a splitting of the $J\!=\!2$ multiplet, leading to a low lying non-Kramers doublet which hosts quadrupolar and octupolar moments. We discuss a microscopic mechanism whereby the combined perturbative effects of orbital repulsion and antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin interactions leads to ferro-octupolar coupling between neighboring sites, and stabilizes ferro-octupolar order for a face-centered cubic lattice. This same mechanism is also shown to disfavor quadrupolar ordering. We show that studying crystal field levels via Raman scattering in a magnetic field provides a probe of octupolar order. We study spin dynamics in the ferro-octupolar state using a slave-boson approach, uncovering a gapped and dispersive magnetic exciton. For sufficiently strong magnetic exchange, the dispersive exciton can condense, leading to conventional type-I antiferromagnetic (AFM) order which can preempt octupolar order. Our proposal for ferrooctupolar order, with specific results in the context of a model Hamiltonian, provides a comprehensive understanding of thermodynamics, $μ$SR, X-ray diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a range of cubic $5d^2$ double perovskite materials including Ba$_2$ZnOsO$_6$, Ba$_2$CaOsO$_6$, and Ba$_2$MgOsO$_6$. Our proposal for exciton condensation leading to type-I AFM order may be relevant to materials such as Sr$_2$MgOsO$_6$.

Neutron scattering measurements on the pyrochlore magnet Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ reveal an unusual crystal field splitting of its lowest $J$=5/2 multiplet, such that its ground state doublet is composed of m$_J$=$\pm$3/2, giving these doublets a dipole - octupole (DO) character with local Ising anisotropy. Its magnetic susceptibility shows weak antiferromagnetic correlations with $θ_{CW}$=-0.4(2)K, leading to a naive expectation of an All-In, All-Out ordered state at low temperatures. Instead our low energy inelastic neutron scattering measurements show a dynamic quantum spin ice state, with suppressed scattering near |$\textbf{Q}$|=0, and no long range order at low temperatures. This is consistent with recent theory predicting symmetry enriched U(1) quantum spin liquids for such DO doublets decorating the pyrochlore lattice. Finally, we show that disorder, especially oxidation of powder samples, is important in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ and could play an important role in the low temperature behaviour of this material.

Spin liquid ground states are predicted to arise within several distinct scenarios in condensed matter physics. The observation of these disordered magnetic states is particularly pervasive amongst a class of materials known as frustrated magnets, in which the competition between various magnetic exchange interactions prevents the system from adopting long-range magnetic order at low temperatures. Spin liquids continue to be of great interest due to their exotic nature and the possibility that they may support fractionalised excitations, such as Majorana fermions. Systems that allow for such phenomena are not only fascinating from a fundamental perspective but may also be practically significant in future technologies based on quantum computation. Here we show that the underlying antiferromagnetic sublattice in TbInO$_3$ undergoes a crystal field induced triangular-to-honeycomb dilution at low temperatures. The absence of a conventional magnetic ordering transition at the lowest measurable temperatures indicates that another critical mechanism must govern in the ground state selection of TbInO$_3$. We propose that anisotropic exchange interactions, mediated through strong spin-orbit coupling on the emergent honeycomb lattice of TbInO$_3$, give rise to a highly frustrated spin liquid.

We report the observation of an extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) in HoBi with a large magnetic moment from Ho f-electrons. Neutron scattering is used to determine the magnetic wave vectors across several metamagnetic (MM) transitions on the phase diagram of HoBi. Unlike other magnetic rare-earth monopnictides, the field dependence of resistivity in HoBi is non-monotonic and reveals clear signatures of every metamagnetic transition in the low-temperature and low-field regime, at T < 2 K and H < 2.3 T. The XMR appears at H > 2.3 T after all the metamagnetic transitions are complete and the system is spin-polarized by the external magnetic field. The existence of an onset field for XMR and the intimate connection between magnetism and transport in HoBi are unprecedented among the magnetic rare-earth monopnictides. Therefore, HoBi provides a unique opportunity to understand the electrical transport in magnetic XMR semimetals.

The bandwidth of the spin excitations is shown to be $\sim$ 5.7(9) to 12(1) meV, respectively, at low temperatures. Spin gaps are surprising in such magnets as the t$_{2g}$ levels of Ru$^{5+}$ or Os$^{5+}$ are expected to be half-filled, resulting in an anticipated orbital singlet for both materials. We compare these results in monoclinic double perovskites La$_2$LiRuO$_6$ and La$_2$LiOsO$_6$ with those in cubic Ba$_2$YRuO$_6$ and Ba$_2$YOsO$_6$, as well as with those in the more strongly monoclinic La$_2$NaRuO$_6$, La$_2$NaOsO$_6$, and Sr$_2$ScOsO$_6$, and model the inelastic magnetic scattering with linear spin wave theory using minimal anisotropic exchange interactions. We discuss the possible role of the distortion of the face-centered cubic, double perovskite structure on the spin gap formation and geometric frustration in these materials, and show that $T_N$ scales with the top of the spin wave band in all members of these families that display long range order.

Over the past two decades, the magnetic ground states of all rare earth titanate pyrochlores have been extensively studied, with the exception of Sm$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. This is, in large part, due to the very high absorption cross-section of naturally-occurring samarium, which renders neutron scattering infeasible. To combat this, we have grown a large, isotopically-enriched single crystal of Sm$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we determine that the crystal field ground state for Sm$^{3+}$ is a dipolar-octupolar doublet with Ising anisotropy. Neutron diffraction experiments reveal that Sm$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ orders into the all-in, all-out magnetic structure with an ordered moment of 0.44(7) $μ_B$ below $T_N=0.35$ K, consistent with expectations for antiferromagnetically-coupled Ising spins on the pyrochlore lattice. Zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements reveal an absence of spontaneous oscillations and persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.03 K. The combination of the dipolar-octupolar nature of the Sm$^{3+}$ moment, the all-in, all-out ordered state, and the low-temperature persistent spin dynamics make this material an intriguing candidate for moment fragmentation physics.

The single ion physics of Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is well-understood to produce strong Ising anisotropy, which is an essential ingredient to its low-temperature spin ice state. We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ that reveal a clear inconsistency with its established single ion Hamiltonian. Specifically, we show that a crystal field doublet near 60~meV is split by approximately 3~meV. Furthermore, this crystal field splitting is not isolated to Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ but can also be found in its chemical pressure analogs, Ho$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$. We demonstrate that the origin of this effect is a vibronic bound state, resulting from the entanglement of a phonon and crystal field excitation. We derive the microscopic Hamiltonian that describes the magneto-elastic coupling and provides a quantitative description of the inelastic neutron spectra.

The three central phenomena of cuprate superconductors are linked by a common doping $p^{\star}$, where the enigmatic pseudogap phase ends, around which the superconducting phase forms a dome, and at which the resistivity exhibits an anomalous linear dependence on temperature as $T \to 0$. However, the fundamental nature of $p^{\star}$ remains unclear, in particular whether it marks a true quantum phase transition. We have measured the specific heat $C$ of the cuprates Eu-LSCO and Nd-LSCO at low temperature in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity, over a wide doping range across $p^{\star}$. As a function of doping, we find that the electronic term $C_{\rm el}$ is strongly peaked at $p^{\star}$, where it exhibits a $-T$log$T$ dependence as $T \to 0$. These are the classic signatures of a quantum critical point, as observed in heavy-fermion and iron-based superconductors where their antiferromagnetic phase ends. We conclude that the pseudogap phase of cuprates ends at a quantum critical point, whose associated fluctuations are most likely involved in the $d$-wave pairing and the anomalous scattering.

We have carried out small angle neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of two members of the family of cubic rare-earth titanate pyrochlores that display ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss susceptibilities,Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is established as displaying a prototypical classical dipolar spin ice ground state, while Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has been purported as a candidate for a quantum spin ice ground state. While both materials have been well studied with neutron scattering techniques, neither has been previously explored in single crystal form with small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Our results for Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ show distinct SANS features below its $Θ_{CW}$$\sim$ 0.50 K, with rods of diffuse scattering extending along $\langle 111 \rangle$ directions in reciprocal space, off-rod scattering which peaks in temperature near $Θ_{CW}$, and quasi-Bragg scattering at very small angles which correlates well with T$_C$ $\sim$ 0.26 K. The quasi-Bragg scattering corresponds to finite extent ferromagnetic domains $\sim$ 140 Å$~$ across, at the lowest temperatures. We interpret the $\langle 111\rangle$ rods of diffuse scattering as arising from domain boundaries between the finite-extent ferromagnetic domains. In contrast the SANS signal in Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is isotropic within the (HHL) plane around $\textbf{Q}$=0. However the strength of this overall SANS signal has a temperature dependence resembling that of the magnetic heat capacity, with a peak near 3 K. Below the break between the field-cooled and the zero-field cooled susceptibility in Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ at $\sim$ 0.60 K, the SANS signal is very low, approaching zero.

The pyrochlore magnet $\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$ has been proposed as a quantum spin ice candidate, a spin liquid state expected to display emergent quantum electrodynamics with gauge photons among its elementary excitations. However, $\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$'s ground state is known to be very sensitive to its precise stoichiometry. Powder samples, produced by solid state synthesis at relatively low temperatures, tend to be stoichiometric, while single crystals grown from the melt tend to display weak "stuffing" wherein $\mathrm{\sim 2\%}$ of the $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$, normally at the $A$ site of the $A_2B_2O_7$ pyrochlore structure, reside as well at the $B$ site. In such samples $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$ ions should exist in defective environments at low levels, and be subjected to crystalline electric fields (CEFs) very different from those at the stoichiometric $A$ sites. New neutron scattering measurements of $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$ in four compositions of $\rm Yb_{2+x}Ti_{2-x}O_{7-y}$, show the spectroscopic signatures for these defective $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$ ions and explicitly demonstrate that the spin anisotropy of the $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$ moment changes from XY-like for stoichiometric $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$, to Ising-like for "stuffed" $B$ site $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$, or for $A$ site $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$ in the presence of an oxygen vacancy.

Magnetic monopoles are hypothesised elementary particles connected by Dirac strings that behave like infinitely thin solenoids. Despite decades of searches, free magnetic monopoles and their Dirac strings have eluded experimental detection, although there is substantial evidence for deconfined magnetic monopole quasiparticles in spin ice materials. Here we report the detection of a hierarchy of unequally-spaced magnetic excitations \emph{via} high resolution inelastic neutron spectroscopic measurements on the quantum spin ice candidate Pr$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$O$_{7}$. These excitations are well-described by a simple model of monopole pairs bound by a linear potential with an effective tension of 0.642(8) K~$\cdot$Å$^{-1}$ at 1.65~K. The success of the linear potential model suggests that these low energy magnetic excitations are direct spectroscopic evidence for the confinement of magnetic monopole quasiparticles in the quantum spin ice candidate Pr$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

Three families of XY pyrochlores have emerged: Yb$_2B_2$O$_7$, Er$_2B_2$O$_7$, and, most recently, $AA'$Co$_2$F$_7$. In each case, the magnetic cation (either Yb, Er, or Co) exhibits XY anisotropy within the local pyrochlore coordinates, a consequence of crystal field effects. Materials in these families display rich phase behavior and are candidates for exotic ground states, such as quantum spin ice, and exotic ground state selection via order-by-disorder mechanisms. In this review, we present an experimental summary of the ground state properties of the XY pyrochlores, including evidence that they are strongly influenced by phase competition. We empirically demonstrate the signatures for phase competition in a frustrated magnet: multiple heat capacity anomalies, suppressed $T_N$ or $T_C$, sample and pressure dependent ground states, and unconventional spin dynamics.

We have carried out a systematic study of the crystal electric field excitations in the family of cubic pyrochlores Er$_2B_2$O$_7$, with $B=$~Ti, Ge, Pt, and Sn, using neutron spectroscopy. All members of this family are magnetic insulators based on 4$f^{11}$ Er$^{3+}$ and non-magnetic $B^{4+}$. At sufficiently low temperatures, long-range antiferromagnetic order is observed in each of these Er$_2B_2$O$_7$ pyrochlores. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements probe the transitions from the ground state doublet to excited crystal electric field states belonging to the $J=15/2$ Hund's rules manifold. This allows us to quantitatively determine the energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of these $(2J+1)=16$ states across the Er$_2B_2$O$_7$ series. The different ionic sizes associated with different non-magnetic $B^{4+}$ cations correspond to positive or negative chemical pressure, depending on the relative contraction or expansion of the crystal lattice, which gives rise to slightly different local environments at the Er$^{3+}$ site. Our results show that the $g$-tensor components, which characterize the anisotropy of the ground state doublet eigenfunctions, are XY-like for all four members of the Er$_2B_2$O$_7$ series. However, the XY anisotropy is much stronger for Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ and Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ ($\frac{g_{\perp}}{g_z} > 25$), than for Er$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ and Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ ($\frac{g_{\perp}}{g_z} < 4$). The variation in the nature of the XY-anisotropy in these systems correlates strongly with their ground states, as Er$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ and Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ order into $Γ_5$ magnetic structures, while Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ and Er$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ order in the $Γ_7$ Palmer-Chalker structure.

We report neutron scattering measurements on Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$, a new addition to the XY family of frustrated pyrochlore magnets. Symmetry analysis of our elastic scattering data shows that Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ is the first XY pyrochlore to order into the $k=0$, $Γ_7$ magnetic structure (the Palmer-Chalker state), at $T_N = 0.38$ K. This contrasts with its sister XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Er$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$, both of which order into $Γ_5$ magnetic structures at much higher temperatures, $T_N=1.2$ K and $1.4$ K, respectively. In this temperature range, the magnetic heat capacity of Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ contains a broad anomaly centered at $T^*=1.5$ K. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that this broad heat capacity anomaly sets the temperature scale for strong short-range spin fluctuations. Below $T_N = 0.38$ K, Er$_2$Pt$_2$O$_7$ displays a gapped spin wave spectrum with an intense, flat band of excitations at lower energy and a weak, diffusive band of excitations at higher energy. The flat band is well-described by classical spin wave calculations, but these calculations also predict sharp dispersive branches at higher energy, a striking discrepancy with the experimental data. This, in concert with the strong suppression of $T_N$, is attributable to enhanced quantum fluctuations due to phase competition between the $Γ_7$ and $Γ_5$ states that border each other within a classically predicted phase diagram.

In condensed matter, the frustrated rare-earth pyrochlore magnets Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, so-called spin ices, exhibit a classical spin liquid state with fractionalized thermal excitations (magnetic monopoles). Evidence for a quantum spin ice, in which the magnetic monopoles become long range entangled and an emergent quantum electrodynamics arises, seems within reach. The magnetic properties of the quantum spin ice candidate Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have eluded a global understanding and even the presence or absence of static magnetic order at low temperatures is controversial. Here we show that sensitivity to pressure is the missing key to the low temperature behaviour of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. By combining neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation on a stoichiometric sample under pressure, we evidence a magnetic transition from a disordered, non-magnetic, ground state to a splayed ferromagnetic ground state.

The XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ exhibits a rare case of $Z_6$ discrete symmetry breaking in its $ψ_2$ magnetic ground state. Despite being well-studied theoretically, systems with high discrete symmetry breakings are uncommon in nature and, thus, Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ provides an experimental playground for the study of broken $Z_n$ symmetry, for $n>2$. A recent theoretical work examined the effect of a magnetic field on a pyrochlore lattice with broken $Z_6$ symmetry and applied it to Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. This study predicted multiple domain transitions depending on the crystallographic orientation of the magnetic field, inducing rich and controllable magnetothermodynamic behavior. In this work, we present neutron scattering measurements on Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ with a magnetic field applied along the [001] and [111] directions, and provide the first experimental observation of these exotic domain transitions. In a [001] field, we observe a $ψ_2$ to $ψ_3$ transition at a critical field of 0.18$\pm$0.05T. We are thus able to extend the concept of the spin-flop transition, which has long been observed in Ising systems, to higher discrete $Z_n$ symmetries. In a [111] field, we observe a series of domain-based phase transitions for fields of 0.15$\pm$0.03T and 0.40$\pm$0.03T. We show that these field-induced transitions are consistent with the emergence of two-fold, three-fold and possibly six-fold Zeeman terms. Considering all the possible $ψ_2$ and $ψ_3$ domains, these Zeeman terms can be mapped onto an analog clock - exemplifying a literal clock anisotropy. Lastly, our quantitative analysis of the [001] domain transition in Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is consistent with order-by-disorder as the dominant ground state selection mechanism.

Below $T_N = 1.1$K, the XY pyrochlore Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ orders into a $k=0$ non-collinear, antiferromagnetic structure referred to as the $ψ_2$ state. The magnetic order in Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is known to obey conventional three dimensional (3D) percolation in the presence of magnetic dilution, and in that sense is robust to disorder. Recently, however, two theoretical studies have predicted that the $ψ_2$ structure should be unstable to the formation of a related $ψ_3$ magnetic structure in the presence of magnetic vacancies. To investigate these theories, we have carried out systematic elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies of three single crystals of Er$_{2-x}$Y$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ with $x=0$ (pure), 0.2 (10$\%$-Y) and 0.4 (20$\%$-Y), where magnetic Er$^{3+}$ is substituted by non-magnetic Y$^{3+}$. We find that the $ψ_2$ ground state of pure Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is significantly affected by magnetic dilution. The characteristic domain selection associated with the $ψ_2$ state, and the corresponding energy gap separating $ψ_2$ from $ψ_3$, vanish for Y$^{3+}$ substitutions between 10$\%$-Y and 20$\%$-Y, far removed from the 3D percolation threshold of $\sim$60$\%$-Y. The resulting ground state for Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ with magnetic dilutions from 20$\%$-Y up to the percolation threshold is naturally interpreted as a frozen mosaic of $ψ_2$ and $ψ_3$ domains.

The ytterbium pyrochlore magnets, Yb2B2O7 (B = Sn, Ti, Ge) are well described by S_eff = 1/2 quantum spins decorating a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra and interacting via anisotropic exchange. Structurally, only the non-magnetic B-site cation, and hence, primarily the lattice parameter, is changing across the series. Nonetheless, a range of magnetic behaviors are observed: the low temperature magnetism in Yb2Ti2O7 and Yb2Sn2O7 has ferromagnetic character, while Yb2Ge2O7 displays an antiferromagnetically ordered Neel state at low temperatures. While the static properties of the ytterbium pyrochlores are distinct, inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal a common character to their exotic spin dynamics. All three ytterbium pyrochlores show a gapless continuum of spin excitations, resembling over-damped ferromagnetic spin waves at low Q. Furthermore, the specific heat of the series also follows a common form, with a broad, high-temperature anomaly followed by a sharp low-temperature anomaly at T_C or T_N. The novel spin dynamics we report correlate strongly with the broad specific heat anomaly only, remaining unchanged across the sharp anomaly. This result suggests that the primary order parameter in the ytterbium pyrochlores associated with the sharp anomaly is "hidden" and not simple magnetic dipole order.

Inelastic neutron scattering was used to probe the transitions between crystal electric field levels, allowing us to determine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors appropriate to the J=7/2 Yb3+ ion in this environment. The crystal electric field ground state doublet in Yb2Ge2O7 corresponds primarily to m_J = +/- 1/2 with local XY anisotropy, consistent with an S_eff = 1/2 description for the Yb moments. muSR measurements reveal the presence of an ordering transition at T_N = 0.57 K with persistent weak dynamics in the ordered state. Finally, we present neutron diffraction measurements that reveal a clear phase transition to the k = (000) Gamma_5 ground state with an ordered magnetic moment of 0.3(1) mu_B per Yb ion. We compare and contrast this phenomenology with the low temperature behavior of Yb2Ti2O7 and Er2Ti2O7, the prototypical S_eff = 1/2 XY pyrochlore magnets.

The ground state of the quantum spin ice candidate magnet Yb2Ti2O7 is known to be sensitive to weak disorder at the 1 percent level which occurs in single crystals grown from the melt. Powders produced by solid state synthesis tend to be stoichiometric and display large and sharp heat capacity anomalies at relatively high temperatures, with Tc about 0.26 K. We have carried out neutron elastic and inelastic measurements on well characterized and equilibrated stoichiometric powder samples of Yb2Ti2O7 which show resolution-limited Bragg peaks to appear at low temperatures, but whose onset correlates with temperatures much higher than Tc. The corresponding magnetic structure is best described as an ice-like splayed ferromagnet. The spin dynamics in Yb2Ti2O7 are shown to be gapless on an energy scale smaller than 0.09 meV at all temperatures, and organized into a continuum of scattering with vestiges of highly overdamped ferromagnetic spin waves present. These excitations differ greatly from conventional spin waves predicted for Yb2Ti2O7 s mean field ordered state, but appear robust to weak disorder as they are largely consistent with those displayed by non stoichiometric crushed single crystals and single crystals, as well as by powder samples of Yb2Ti2O7 s sister quantum magnet Yb2Sn2O7.

We present new time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on the $x=-0.001$ and the $x=+0.0147$ samples which show strong $\left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right)$ quasi-Bragg peaks at low temperatures characteristic of short range antiferromagnetic spin ice (AFSI) order at zero magnetic field but only under field-cooled conditions, as was previously observed in our $x = 0.0042$ single crystal. These results show that the strong $\left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right)$ quasi-Bragg peaks and gapped AFSI state at low temperatures under field cooled conditions are robust features of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and are not correlated with the presence or absence of the C$_P$ anomaly and phase transition at low temperatures. Further, these results show that the ordered state giving rise to the C$_P$ anomaly is confined to $0 \leq x \leq 0.01$ for Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+δ}$, and is not obviously connected with conventional order of magnetic dipole degrees of freedom.

We present time-of-fight neutron-scattering measurements on single crystals of $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$ (LBCO) with 0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.095 and $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ (LSCO) with x = 0.08 and 0.11. This range of dopings spans much of the phase diagram relevant to high temperature cuprate superconductivity, ranging from insulating, three dimensional (3D) commensurate long range antiferromagnetic order, for x $\leq$ 0.02, to two dimensional (2D) incommensurate antiferromagnetism co-existing with superconductivity for x $\geq$ 0.05. Previous work on lightly doped LBCO with x = 0.035 showed a clear resonant enhancement of the inelastic scattering coincident with the low energy crossings of the highly dispersive spin excitations and quasi-2D optic phonons. The present work extends these measurements across the phase diagram and shows this enhancement to be a common feature to this family of layered quantum magnets. Furthermore we show that the low temperature, low energy magnetic spectral weight is substantially larger for samples with non-superconducting ground states relative to any of the samples with superconducting ground states. Spin gaps, suppression of low energy magnetic spectral weight as a function of decreasing temperature, are observed in both superconducting LBCO and LSCO samples, consistent with previous observations for superconducting LSCO.

Time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy has been used to determine the crystalline electric field (CEF) Hamiltonian, eigenvalues and eigenvectors appropriate to the $J$ = 7/2 Yb$^{3+}$ ion in the candidate quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnet $\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$. The precise ground state (GS) of this exotic, geometrically-frustrated magnet is known to be sensitive to weak disorder associated with the growth of single crystals from the melt. Such materials display weak "stuffing" wherein a small proportion, $\approx$ 2\%, of the non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ sites are occupied by excess Yb$^{3+}$. We have carried out neutron spectroscopic measurements on a stoichiometric powder sample of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, as well as a crushed single crystal with weak stuffing and an approximate composition of Yb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ with $x$ = 0.046. All samples display three CEF transitions out of the GS, and the GS doublet itself is identified as primarily composed of m$_J$ = $\pm$1/2, as expected. However,"stuffing" at low temperatures in Yb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ induces a similar finite CEF lifetime as is induced in stoichiometric Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ by elevated temperature. We conclude that an extended strain field exists about each local "stuffed" site, which produces a distribution of random CEF environments in the lightly stuffed Yb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$, in addition to producing a small fraction of Yb-ions in defective environments with grossly different CEF eigenvalues and eigenvectors.

Solid-solutions of the "soft" quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnets Tb2B2O7 with B=Ti and Sn display a novel magnetic ground state in the presence of strong B-site disorder, characterized by a low susceptibility and strong spin fluctuations to temperatures below 0.1 K. These materials have been studied using ac-susceptibility and muSR techniques to very low temperatures, and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering techniques to 1.5 K. Remarkably, neutron spectroscopy of the Tb3+ crystal field levels appropriate to at high B-site mixing (0.5 < x < 1.5 in Tb2Sn2-xTixO7) reveal that the doublet ground and first excited states present as continua in energy, while transitions to singlet excited states at higher energies simply interpolate between those of the end members of the solid solution. The resulting ground state suggests an extreme version of a random-anisotropy magnet, with many local moments and anisotropies, depending on the precise local configuration of the six B sites neighboring each magnetic Tb3+ ion.

The Ho2Ti2O7, Er2Ti2O7 and Yb2Ti2O7 pyrochlores were studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction to determine whether the (002) peak, forbidden in the pyrochlore space group Fd-3m but observed in single crystal neutron scattering measurements, is present due to a deviation of their pyrochlore structure from Fd-3m symmetry. Synchrotron diffraction measurements on precisely synthesized stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric powders and a crushed floating zone crystal of Ho2Ti2O7 revealed that the (002) reflection is absent in all cases to a sensitivity of approximately one part in 30,000 of the strongest X-ray diffraction peak. This indicates to high sensitivity that the structural space group of these rare earth titanate pyrochlores is Fd-3m, and that thus the (002) peak observed in the neutron scattering experiments has a non-structural origin. The cell parameters and internal strain for lightly stuffed Ho2+xTi2-xO7 are also presented.

An important and continuing theme of modern solid state physics is the realization of exotic excitations in materials (e.g. quasiparticles) that have no analogy (or have not yet been observed) in the actual physical vacuum of free space. Although they are not fundamental particles, such quasiparticles do constitute the most basic description of the excited states of the "vacuum" in which they reside. In this regard the magnetic textures of the excited states of spin ices, magnetic pyrochlore oxides with dominant Ising interactions, are proposed to be modeled as effective magnetic charge monopoles. Recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments have established the pyrochlore material Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ (YbTO) as a quantum spin ice, where in addition to the Ising interactions there are substantial transverse terms that may induce quantum dynamics and - in principle - coherent monopole motion. Here we report a combined time domain terahertz spectroscopy (TDTS) and microwave cavity study of YbTO to probe its complex dynamic magnetic susceptibility. We find that the form of the susceptibility is consistent with monopole motion and a magnetic monopole conductivity can be defined and measured. Using the unique phase sensitive capabilities of these techniques, we observe a sign change in the reactive part of the magnetic response. In generic models of monopole motion this is only possible through introducing inertial effects, e.g. a mass dependent term, to the equations of motion. Analogous to conventional electric charge systems, measurement of the conductivity's spectral weight allows us to derive a value for the magnetic monopole mass, which we find to be approximately 1800 electron masses. Our results establish the magnetic monopoles of quantum spin ice as true coherently propagating quasiparticles of this system.

We present time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements of $La_{1.965}Ba_{0.035}CuO_{4}$ (LBCO), a lightly doped member of the high temperature superconducting La-based cuprate family. By using time-of-flight neutron instrumentation coupled with single crystal sample rotation we obtain a four-dimensional data set (three {\bf Q} and one energy) that is both comprehensive and spans a large region of reciprocal space. Our measurements identify rich structure in the energy dependence of the highly dispersive spin excitations, which are centered at equivalent ($\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}, L$) wave-vectors. These structures correlate strongly with several crossings of the spin excitations with the lightly dispersive phonons found in this system. These effects are significant and account for on the order of 25$\%$ of the total inelastic scattering for energies between $\sim$5 and 40 meV at low $|{\bf Q}|$. Interestingly, this scattering also presents little or no $L$-dependence. As the phonons and dispersive spin excitations centered at equivalent ($\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}, L$) wave-vectors are common to all members of La-based 214 copper oxides, we conclude such strong quasi-two dimensional scattering enhancements are likely to occur in all such 214 families of materials, including those concentrations corresponding to superconducting ground states. Such a phenomenon appears to be a fundamental characteristic of these materials and is potentially related to superconducting pairing.

Os$^{5+}$ ($5d^3$) ions occupy a non-distorted, geometrically frustrated face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattice. A Curie-Weiss temperature $θ= -772$~K suggests the presence of a large antiferromagnetic interaction and a high degree of magnetic frustration. A magnetic transition to long range antiferromagnetic order, consistent with a Type I FCC state below $T_{\rm N} \sim 69$~K, is revealed by magnetization, Fisher heat capacity and elastic neutron scattering, with an ordered moment of 1.65(6)~$μ_B$ on Os$^{5+}$. The ordered moment is much reduced from either the expected spin only value of $\sim 3 μ_B$ or the value appropriate to $4d^3$ Ru$^{5+}$ in isostructural Ba$_2$YRuO$_6$ of 2.2(1)~$μ_B$, suggesting a role for spin orbit coupling (SOC). Triple axis neutron scattering measurements of the order parameter suggest an additional first-order transition at $T = 67.45$~K, and the existence of a second ordered state. %
Time-of-flight inelastic neutron results reveal a large spin gap $Δ\sim 17$~meV, unexpected for an orbitally quenched, $d^3$ electronic configuration. We discuss this in the context of the $\sim 5$~meV spin gap observed in the related Ru$^{5+}$, $4d^3$ cubic double perovskite Ba$_2$YRuO$_6$, and attribute the $\sim 3$ times larger gap to stronger SOC present in this heavier, $5d$, osmate system.

In condensed matter systems, the formation of long range order (LRO) with broken symmetry is often accompanied by new types of excitations. However, in many magnetic pyrochlore oxides, geometrical frustration suppresses conventional LRO while at the same time non-trivial spin correlations are observed. For such materials, a natural question to ask then is what is the nature of the excitations in this highly correlated state without broken symmetry? Frequently the application of a symmetry breaking field can stabilize excitations whose properties still reflect certain aspects of the anomalous state without long-range order. Here we report evidence of novel magnetic excitations in the quantum spin ice material Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, obtained from time-domain terahertz spectroscopy (TDTS). At large fields, both magnon and two-magnon-like excitations are observed in a $<$001$>$ directed magnetic field illustrating the stabilization of a field induced LRO state. The unique ability of TDTS to measure complex response functions allows a direct study of magnetic responses in different polarization channels, revealing the existence of an unusual left-hand polarized magnon. The g-factors of these excitations are dramatically enhanced in the low-field limit, showing a cross-over of these one- and two-magnon states into features consistent with quantum string-like excitations proposed to exist in quantum spin ice in a small $<$001$>$ applied field.

Structural phase transitions in Pr$_{1-x}$La$_x$AlO$_3$ (0 $\leq x\leq$ 1) single crystals have been studied through heat capacity and high-resolution x-ray scattering measurements. For PrAlO$_3$, the heat capacity shows a sharp first-order peak at the rhombohedral to orthorhombic transition, while a classical mean-field anomaly is observed at the orthorhombic to monoclinic transition at lower temperatures. The transition temperature and the heat capacity anomaly of the two transitions diminish with increasing $x$, and only a single rhombohedral to monoclinic transition is observed for $x = 0.8$. Although this latter transition is required by group theory to be first order, no such evidence is found in the heat capacity and x-ray scattering measurements. Instead, the results are consistent with mean-field criticality, with a small distribution of transition temperature originating from weak disorder.
