We performed ultrasonic and temperature measurements under pulsed magnetic fields on CeIrIn$_5$ to investigate whether or not the origin of metamagnetic transition and field-induced Lifshitz transition was described by the anisotropic electronic ordering with crystal symmetry breaking. We observed elastic anomalies with the negative magnetocaloric effects around the field-induced Lifshitz transition and the metamagnetic transition. On the other hand, the elastic anomalies appeared both in the transverse elastic constants $(C_{11} - C_{12})/2$ and $C_{66}$ in CeIrIn$_5$ while $(C_{11} - C_{12})/2$ showed significant elastic anomaly at the crystal symmetry breaking fields in CeRhIn$_5$. These results indicate that the anisotropic electronic ordering with crystal symmetry breaking is absent in high-magnetic fields in CeIrIn$_{5}$.

We report the first study of electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat on YbCo$_2$. The measurements on a single-phased sample of YbCo$_2$ bring no evidence of magnetic ordering down to 0.3 K in a zero magnetic field. The manifestations of low Kondo temperature are observed. The specific heat value divided by temperature, C/T, keeps increasing logarithmically beyond 7 J/mol.K2 with decreasing temperature down to 0.3 K without no sign of magnetic ordering, suggesting a very large electronic specific heat. Analysis of the magnetic specific heat indicates that the large portion of the low-temperature specific heat is not explained simply by the low Kondo temperature but is due to the strong intersite magnetic correlation in both the 3d and 4f electrons. Temperature-dependent measurements under static magnetic fields up to 7 T are carried out, which show the evolution of field-induced transition above 2 T. The transition temperature increases with increasing field, pointing to a ferromagnetic character. The extrapolation of the transition temperature to zero field suggests that YbCo$_2$ is in the very proximity of the quantum critical point. These results indicate that in the unique case of YbCo$_2$, the itinerant electron magnetism of Co 3d-electrons and the Kondo effect within the vicinity of quantum criticality of Yb 4f-local moments can both play a role.

The transverse elastic constant $C_{55}$ with irreducible representation $B_\mathrm{2g}$ exhibits softening over 90\% above a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{s} = 280$ K, indicating the soft mode of corresponding TA phonons. Our analysis based on the quadrupole response indicates that the electron-phonon interaction contributes to the excitonic transition in addition to the hybridization between the conduction and valence bands if the excitonic transition is realized.

We report a $μ$SR investigation of a non-centrosymmetric superconductor (LaNiC$_2$) in single crystal form. Compared to previous $μ$SR studies of non-centrosymmetric superconducting polycrystalline and powder samples, the unambiguous orientation of single crystals enables a simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the magnetic penetration depth and the vortex core size from measurements that probe the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state. The magnetic field dependence of these quantities unambiguously demonstrates the presence of two nodeless superconducting energy gaps. In addition, we detect weak internal magnetic fields in the superconducting phase, confirming earlier $μ$SR evidence for a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting state. Our results suggest that Cooper pairing in LaNiC$_2$ is characterized by the same interorbital equal-spin pairing model introduced to describe the pairing state in the centrosymmetric superconductor LaNiGa$_2$.

The magnetic moments are found to be aligned along the crystallographic $c$ axis. This is further confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data, which suggest the $c$ axis to be the easy magnetic axis. The transverse elastic constant $C_\mathrm{T} = (C_{11} - C_{12})/2$ and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient $α_\mathrm{T}$ show clear anomaly at $B^\star = 28.5$ T, which was discussed as the electronic nematic transition point. In addition, $C_\mathrm{T}$ exhibits acoustic de Haas-van Alphen oscillation below 28.5 T. These elastic anomalies around $B^\star$ indicate an electric quadrupole ordering of $O_{x^2-y^2}$ accompanied by $B_\mathrm{1g}$ crystal symmetry breaking and Fermi surface reconstruction due to the quadrupole-strain coupling, which results from itinerant $4f$ electrons and the $p$-$f$ hybridized state.

We consider a mathematical model for a two-particle system driven by the spatial gradient of a concentration field of chemicals with conservative attractive interactions in one dimension. This setup corresponds to an experimental system with floating camphor particles at a water surface. Repulsive interaction is introduced, as well as self-propelling force, through the concentration field of camphor molecules at the water surface. Here we newly adopt the attractive lateral capillary force due to the deformation of the water surface. The particles experience competing dissipative repulsion and conservative attraction. We numerically investigated the mathematical model, and found six different modes of motion. The theoretical approach revealed that some of such mode transitions can be understood in terms of bifurcation.

The extended Hubbard model with a nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion on the square lattice is studied to obtain insight into the phase diagram of cuprate high $T_c$ superconductors (HTS). To pursue the hidden-order scenario proposed in [S. Chakravarty et al., Phys. Rev. B 63, 094503 (2001)], we derive an effective Hamiltonian by using the canonical transformation and develop a mean-field theory. The calculated phase diagrams are qualitatively consistent with the experimental phase diagrams of HTS, and we thus conclude that the pseudogap can be interpreted as the order parameter of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave density wave (DDW) state, and the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting (DSC) rises based on the DDW order. Furthermore, the analytical representation of the density of states is obtained and, near the optimal doping of the DSC, the van Hove singular point of the density of states is located at the Fermi level.

We study spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like-decorated square lattice. The diamond-like-decorated square lattice is a lattice in which the bonds in a square lattice are replaced with diamond units. The diamond unit has two types of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and the ratio $λ$ of the diagonal bond strength to that of the other four edges controls the frustration strength. For $0.974<λ<2$, the present system has a nontrivial macroscopic degeneracy, which is called the macroscopically degenerated tetramer-dimer (MDTD) states. The MDTD states are identical to the Hilbert space of the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) quantum dimer model (QDM). By introducing further neighbor couplings in the MDTD states, we calculate the second-order effective Hamiltonian, which is exactly the same as the square-lattice QDM with a finite hopping amplitude $t$ and dimer-dimer interaction $v$. Furthermore, we calculate $v/|t|$ as a function of the ratio $λ$ in the Heisenberg model and examine which phases of the square-lattice QDM appear in our obtained states. Our obtained QDM has a region where $λ$ exhibits a finite hopping amplitude ($|t|>0$) and repulsive interaction between dimers ($v>0$). This suggests the possibility of realizing the resonating valence bond (RVB) state because the RVB state is obtained at $v=|t|$, which is known as the RK point.

In this study, we introduce another kind of further neighbor coupling and show that it leads to an attractive interaction between dimers, which suggests the stabilization of the columnar phase of the square-lattice quantum-dimer model. We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the layered heavy-fermion compound CePt$_2$In$_7$ in high magnetic fields up to 35 T. Above an angle-dependent threshold field, we observed several de Haas-van Alphen frequencies originating from almost ideally two-dimensional Fermi surfaces. The frequencies are similar to those previously observed to develop only above a much higher field of 45 T, where a clear anomaly was detected and proposed to originate from a change in the electronic structure [M. M. Altarawneh et al., Phys. Rev. B 83, 081103 (2011)]. Our experimental results are compared with band structure calculations performed for both CePt$_2$In$_7$ and LaPt$_2$In$_7$, and the comparison suggests localized $f$ electrons in CePt$_2$In$_7$. This conclusion is further supported by comparing experimentally observed Fermi surfaces in CePt$_2$In$_7$ and PrPt$_2$In$_7$, which are found to be almost identical. The measured effective masses in CePt$_2$In$_7$ are only moderately enhanced above the bare electron mass $m_0$, from 2$m_0$ to 6$m_0$.

In particular, the scaling relation found in the MSW study, which argues that sublattice spin reductions are inversely proportional to the sublattice sizes, is observed in our QMC simulation. We present a rigorous proof for spontaneous sublattice magnetizations induced by an infinitesimal uniform magnetic field. The calculation process in the MSW theory is reexamined to clarify the mathematical structure behind the scaling relation for sublattice long-range orders.

In antiferromagnetic systems, the magnetization cannot saturate under finite magnetic fields owing to the competition between the antiferromagnetic and Zeeman interactions and the intrinsic long-range nature of hierarchical lattices. For the zero-field classical spin-liquid phase found in [Kobayashi et al., J. Phys. Soc. We study the ground-state phase diagram of a Heisenberg model with spin $S=\frac{1}{2}$ on a diamond-like decorated square lattice. A diamond unit has two types of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and the ratio $λ$ between the length of the diagonal bond and that of the other four edges determines the strength of frustration. It has been pointed out [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn {\bf85}, 033705 (2016)] that the so-called tetramer-dimer states, which are expected to be stabilized in an intermediate region of $λ_{\rm c}<λ<2$, are identical to the square-lattice dimer covering states, which ignited renewed interest in high-dimensional diamond-like decorated lattices. In order to determine the phase boundary $λ_{\rm c}$, we employ the modified spin wave method to estimate the energy of the ferrimagnetic state and obtain $λ_{\rm c}=0.974$. Our obtained magnetizations for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ sites and for spin-1 sites are $m=0.398$ and $\tilde{m}=0.949$, and spin reductions are 20 \% and 5\%, respectively. This indicates that spin fluctuation is much smaller than that of the $S=\frac{1}{2}$ square-lattice antiferromagnet: thus, we can consider that our obtained ground-state energy is highly accurate. Further, our numerical diagonalization study suggests that other cluster states do not appear in the ground-state phase diagram.

A diffraction experiment using a high energy x-ray was carried out on YbInCu4. Below the Yb valence transition temperature, the splitting of Bragg peaks was detected in higher-order reflections. No superlattice reflections accompanying the valence ordering were found below the transition temperature. These experimental findings indicate that a structural change from a cubic structure to a tetragonal structure without valence ordering occurs at the transition temperature. Such a structural change free from any valence ordering is difficult to understand only in terms of Yb valence degrees of freedom. This means that the structural change may be related to electronic symmetries such as quadrupolar degrees of freedom as well as the change in Yb valence.

Abstract:
We report specific heat measurements on a high quality single crystal of the heavy-fermion compound CePt$_2$In$_7$ in magnetic fields up to 27 T. The zero-field specific heat data above the Néel temperature, $T_N$, suggest a moderately enhanced value of the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ= 180 \; \rm{mJ/K^2mol}$. For $T<T_N$, the data at zero applied magnetic field are consistent with the…

For $T<T_N$, the data at zero applied magnetic field are consistent with the existence of an anisotropic spin-density wave opening a gap on almost entire Fermi surface, suggesting extreme two-dimensional electronic and magnetic structures for CePt$_2$In$_7$. $T_N$ is monotonically suppressed by magnetic field applied along the $c$-axis. When field is applied parallel to the $a$-axis, $T_N$ first increases at low field up to about 10 T and then decreases monotonically at higher field. Magnetic phase diagram based on specific heat measurements suggests that a field-induced quantum critical point is likely to occur slightly below 60 T for both principal orientations of the magnetic field.

Abstract:
SrVO3 and SrNbO3 are perovskite-type transition-metal oxides with the same d1 electronic configuration. Although SrNbO3 (4d1) has a larger d orbital than SrVO3 (3d1), the reported electrical resistivity of SrNbO3 is much higher than that of SrVO3, probably owing to nonstoichiometry. Although SrNbO3 (4d1) has a larger d orbital than SrVO3 (3d1), the reported electrical resistivity of SrNbO3 is much higher than that of SrVO3, probably owing to nonstoichiometry. In this paper, we grew epitaxial, high-conductivity stoichiometric SrNbO3 using pulsed laser deposition. The growth temperature strongly affected the Sr/Nb ratio and the oxygen content of the films, and we obtained stoichiometric SrNbO3 at a very narrow temperature window around 630 $°$C. The stoichiometric SrNbO3 epitaxial thin films grew coherently on KTaO3 (001) substrates with high crystallinity. The room-temperature resistivity of the stoichiometric film was $2.82 {\times} 10^{-5} Ω$cm, one order of magnitude lower than the lowest reported value of SrNbO3 and comparable with that of SrVO3. We observed a T-square dependence of resistivity below $T^{\ast}$ = 180 K and non-Drude behavior in near-infrared absorption spectroscopy, attributable to the Fermi-liquid nature caused by electron correlation. Analysis of the T-square coefficient A of resistivity experimentally revealed that the 4d orbital of Nb that is larger than the 3d ones certainly contributes to the high electrical conduction of SrNbO3.

We have successfully observed a $^{153}$Eu zero-field NMR signal with well-resolved nuclear quadrupole splitting in the antiferromagnetic state of EuGa$_{4}$. $^{69,71}$Ga zero-field NMR spectra were also observed below $T_{\rm{N}}$. The internal field and nuclear quadrupole frequency are estimated from a simulation of the spectra by the exact diagonalization of the nuclear spin Hamiltonian matrix. The asymmetrically split zero-field NMR spectra were explained by considering a configuration of the magnetic moments of Eu$^{2+}$ lying in the basal $ab$-plane. The temperature dependence of the internal field, which is proportional to the sublattice magnetization, can be explained by the Brillouin function with $J=S=7/2$

We consider the formation of finite-size domains in lipid bilayers consisting of saturated and hybrid lipids. First, we describe a monolayer model that includes a coupling between a compositional scalar field and a two-dimensional vectorial order-parameter. Such a coupling yields an effective two-dimensional microemulsion free-energy for the lipid monolayer, and its characteristic length of compositional modulations can be considered as the origin of finite-size domains in biological membranes. Next, we consider a coupled bilayer composed of two modulated monolayers, and discuss the static and dynamic properties of concentration fluctuations above the transition temperature. We also investigate the micro-phase separation below the transition temperature, and compare the micro-phase separated structures with statics and dynamics of concentration fluctuations above the transition.

We propose a model addressing the coupling mechanism between two spatially modulated monolayers. We obtain the mean-field phase diagrams of coupled bilayers when the two monolayers have the same preferred modulation wavelength. Various combinations of the monolayer modulated phases are obtained and their relative stability is calculated. Due to the coupling, a spatial modulation in one of the monolayers induces a similar periodic structure in the second one. We have also performed numerical simulations for the case when the two monolayers have different modulation wavelengths. Complex patterns may arise from the frustration between the two incommensurate but annealed structures.

When anisotropy of the diffusion coefficient changes alternately on consecutive terraces like a Si(001) vicinal face, bunching occurs with the drift of adatoms. If the fluctuation of step bunches is neglected as in the one-dimensional model, the bunching with step-down drift is faster than that with step-up drift in contradiction with the experiment by Latyshev and coworkers. In a two-dimensional model, the step bunches wander heavily with step-up drift and recombination with neighboring bunches occur more frequently than those with step-down drift and the bunching is accelerated. When the difference of kinetic coefficients between two types of steps is taken into account, the bunching with step-up drift can be faster than that with step-down drift.

By taking account of the alternation of structural parameters, we study bunching of impermeable steps induced by drift of adatoms on a vicinal face of Si(001). With the alternation of diffusion coefficient, the step bunching occurs irrespective of the direction of the drift if the step distance is large. Like the bunching of permeable steps, the type of large terraces is determined by the drift direction. With step-down drift, step bunches grows faster than those with step-up drift. The ratio of the growth rates is larger than the ratio of the diffusion coefficients. Evaporation of adatoms, which does not cause the step bunching, decreases the difference. If only the alternation of kinetic coefficient is taken into account, the step bunching occurs with step-down drift. In an early stage, the initial fluctuation of the step distance determines the type of large terraces, but in a late stage, the type of large terraces is opposite to the case of alternating diffusion coefficient.

With a Si(001) vicinal surface in mind, we study step wandering instability on a vicinal surface with an anisotropic surface diffusion whose orientation dependence alternates on each consecutive terrace. In a conserved system step wandering takes place with step-up adatom drift. Repulsive interaction between steps is found indispensable for the instability. Monte Carlo simulation with a strong repulsive step interaction confirms the result of linear stability analysis, and further shows that in-phase step wandering produces straight grooves. Grooves widen as their amplitudes increase in proportion to the square root of time.
