Oxygen isotope compositions of chondrules reflect the environment of chondrule formation and its spatial and temporal variations. Here, we present a theoretical model of oxygen isotope exchange reaction between molten silicate spherules and ambient water vapor with finite relative velocity. We found a new phenomenon, that is, mass-dependent fractionation caused by isotope exchange with ambient vapor moving with nonzero relative velocity. We also discussed the plausible condition for chondrule formation from the point of view of oxygen isotope compositions. Our findings indicate that the relative velocity between chondrules and ambient vapor would be lower than several 100 m/s when chondrules crystallized.

Among the several flexible thermoelectric modules in existence, sintered Bi-Te-based modules represent a viable option because of their high output power density and flexibility, which enables the use of arbitrary heat sources. We have fabricated Bi-Te-based modules with a large-scalable fabrication process and improved their output performance. The reduction in the interconnection resistance, using thick electrodes of the flexible printed circuit, significantly improves the module's output power to 87 mW/cm$^{2}$ at $ΔT$ = 70 K, which is 1.3-fold higher than a previous prototype module. Furthermore, the establishment of the fabrication for the top electrodes by using the surface mount technology makes it possible to realize a high-throughput manufacturing of the module. Our durability tests reveal that there is no significant change in the internal resistance of the module during 10000 cycles of mechanical bending test and 1000 cycles of thermal stress test.

Abstract:
We report that the local Ising anisotropy in pyrochlore oxides - the crucial requirement for realizing the spin-ice state - can be broken by means of high magnetic fields. For the case of the well-established classical spin-ice compound Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ the magnetization exceeds the angle-dependent saturation value of the Ising limit using ultra-high fields up to 120 T. However, even under such extreme magnetic fields full saturation cannot be achieved. Crystal-electric-field calculations reveal that a level crossing for two of the four ion positions leads to magnetization steps at 55 and 100 T. In addition, we show that by using a field sweep rate in the range of the spin-relaxation time the dynamics of the spin system can be probed. Exclusively at 25 ns/T a new peak of the susceptibility appears around 2 T. We argue, this signals the cross-over between spin-ice and polarized correlations.

Abstract:
We report measurements of structural phase transition of four parent compounds $R$FeAsO ($R$ = La, Sm, Gd, and Tb) by means of low-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD). Magnetic transition temperatures associated with Fe ions ($T_{N1}$) are also determined from the temperature dependence of resistivity. As $R$ is changed from La, through Sm and Gd, to Tb, both the c-axis and a-axis lattice constants decrease significantly. Meanwhile both the structural phase transition temperature ($T_S$) and $T_{N1}$ decrease monotonously. It is also found that the temperature gap between $T_S$ and $T_{N1}$ becomes smaller when the distance between FeAs layer becomes shorter. This result is consistent with magnetically driven structural phase transition and suggests that the dimensionality have an important effect on the AFM ordering.

Structural studies on the icosahedral quasicrystals in Zn-Mg-Sc, Cu-Ga-Mg-Sc, and Zn-Mg-Ti alloys as well as their corresponding 1/1 cubic approximants, have revealed that these quasicrystals belong to a new structural group similar to Cd-based quasicrystals. This group is characterized by a triple-shell icosahedral cluster different from both Mackay- and Bergman-types. The presence of the atomic cluster has been deduced from the structure model of the approximant crystal, Zn17Sc3, in which the clusters are embedded in a periodic network of so-called "glue atoms". Density measurement suggested the presence of at least 2.7 Zn atoms in the first shell of the cluster in this approximant. The substitutional relationship in these three quasicrystals indicates the important role of Hume-Rothery rule for the formation of this type of quasicrystal. The occurrence of a P-type icosahedral quasicrystal in Zn-Mg-Yb alloy is also reported.
