We study minimum-energy pathways (MEPs) between the branches of metastable helical structures in chiral nematic liquid crystals (CNLCs)subjected to the electric field applied across the cell. By performing stability analysis we have found that, for the branches with non-vanishing half-turn number, the threshold (critical) voltage of the Freedericksz transition is an increasing function of the free twisting wave number. The curves for the threshold voltage depend on the elastic anisotropy and determine the zero-field critical free twisting number where the director out-of-plane fluctuations destabilize the CNLC helix. For each MEP passing through a first order saddle point we have computed the energy barrier as the energy difference between the saddle-point and the initial structures at different values of the applied field. In our calculations, where the initial approximation for a MEP at the next step was determined by the MEP obtained at the previous step, the electric field dependence of the energy barrier is found to exhibit the hysteresis. This is the hysteresis of electrically driven transition of the saddle-point configuration between the planar and the tilted structures involving out-of-plane director deformations. It turned out that, by contrast to the second-order Freedericksz transition, this transition is first order and we have studied how it depends on the zenithal anchoring energy strength.

We apply the minimum energy paths (MEPs) approach to study the helix unwinding transition in chiral nematic liquid crystals. A mechanism of the transition is determined by a MEP passing through a first order saddle point on the free energy surface. The energy difference between the saddle point and the initial state gives the energy barrier of the transition. Two starting approximations for the paths are used to find the MEPs representing different transition scenarios: (a) the director slippage approximation with in-plane helical structures; and (b) the anchoring breaking approximation that involves the structures with profound out-of-plane director deviations. It is shown that, at sufficiently low voltages, the unwinding transition is solely governed by the director slippage mechanism with the planar saddle point structures. When the applied voltage exceeds its critical value below the threshold of the Freedericksz transition, the additional scenario through the anchoring breaking transitions is found to come into play. For these transitions, the saddle point structure is characterized by out-of-plane deformations localized near the bounding surface. The energy barriers for different paths of transitions are computed as a function of the voltage and the anchoring energy strengths.

We employ the transfer matrix approach combined with the Green's function method to theoretically study polarization resolved far-field angular distributions of photoluminescence from quantum nanorods (NRs) embedded in an anisotropic polymer film. The emission and excitation properties of NRs are described by the emission and excitation anisotropy tensors. These tensors and the solution of the emission problem expressed in terms of the evolution operators are used to derive the orientationally averaged coherency matrix of the emitted wavefield. For the case of in-plane alignment and unpolarized excitation, we estimate the emission anisotropy parameter and compute the angular profiles for the photoluminescence polarization parameter such as the degree of linear polarization, the Stokes parameter $s_1$, the ellipticity and the polarization azimuth. We show that the alignment order parameter has a profound effect on the angular profiles.

We find that the field-induced shift of the interference fringes can be described in terms of the electrically dependent Pancharatnam relative phase determined by the averaged phase shift, whereas the visibility of the fringes is solely dictated by the phase retardation.

We study both experimentally and theoretically modulation of light in a planar aligned deformed-helix ferroelectric liquid crystal (DHFLC) cell with subwavelength helix pitch, which is also known as a short-pitch DHFLC. In our experiments, azimuthal angle of the in-plane optical axis and electrically controlled parts of the principal in-plane refractive indices were measured as a function of voltage applied across the cell. Theoretical results giving the effective optical tensor of a short-pitch DHFLC expressed in terms of the smectic tilt angle and the refractive indices of FLC are used to fit the experimental data. Optical anisotropy of the FLC material is found to be weakly biaxial. For both the transmissive and reflective modes, the results of fitting are applied to model phase and amplitude modulation of light in the DHFLC cell. We demonstrate that, if the thickness of the DHFLC layer is about 50 $μ$m, the detrimental effect of field-induced rotation of the in-plane optical axes on the characteristics of an axicon designed using the DHFLC spatial light modulator in the reflective mode is negligible.

In order to explore electric-field-induced transformations of polarization singularities in the polarization-resolved angular (conoscopic) patterns emerging after deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal (DHFLC) cells with subwavelength helix pitch, we combine the transfer matrix formalism with the results for the effective dielectric tensor of biaxial FLCs evaluated using an improved technique of averaging over distorted helical structures. Within the framework of the transfer matrix method, we deduce a number of symmetry relations and show that the symmetry axis of L lines (curves of linear polarization) is directed along the major in-plane optical axis which rotates under the action of the electric field. When the angle between this axis and the polarization plane of incident linearly polarized light is above its critical value, the C points (points of circular polarization) appear in the form of symmetrically arranged chains of densely packed star-monstar pairs. We also emphasize the role of phase singularities of a different kind and discuss the enhanced electro-optic response of DHFLCs near the exceptional point where the condition of zero-field isotropy is fulfilled.

We experimentally study how the cholesteric pitch, $P$, depends on the equilibrium one, $P_0$, in planar liquid crystal (LC) cells with both strong and semistrong anchoring conditions. The cholesteric phase was induced by dissolution in the nematic LC the right-handed chiral dopant 7-DHC (7-dehydrocholesterol, provitamin $D_3$) which transforms to left-handed tachysterol under the action of UV irradiation at the wavelength of 254 nm. By using the model of photoreaction kinetics we obtain dependencies of isomers concentrations and thus the equilibrium pitch on UV irradiation dose. The cholesteric pitch was measured as a function of irradiation time using the polarimetry method. In this method, the pitch is estimated from the experimental data on the irradiation time dependence of the ellipticity of light transmitted through the LC cells. It is found that the resulting dependence of the twist parameter, $2 D/P$ ($D$ is the cell thickness), on the free twisting number parameter, $2 D/P_0$, shows the jump-like behaviour and agrees well with the known theoretical results for the anchoring potential of the Rapini-Papoular form.

We study both theoretically and experimentally the electro-optical properties of vertically aligned deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystals (VADHFLC) with subwavelength pitch that are governed by the electrically induced optical biaxiality of the smectic helical structure. The key theoretical result is that the principal refractive indices of homogenized VADHFLC cells exhibit the quadratic nonlinearity and such behavior might be interpreted as the orientational "Kerr effect" caused by the electric-field-induced orientational distortions of the FLC helix. In our experiments, it has been observed that, for sufficiently weak electric fields, the magnitude of biaxiality is proportional to the square of electric field in good agreement with our theoretical results for the effective dielectric tensor of VADHFLCs. Under certain conditions, the 2$π$ phase modulation of light, which is caused by one of the induced refractive indices, is observed without changes in ellipticity of incident light.

We systematically examine the general properties of the torque balance model by performing analysis of the bifurcations of equilibria at different values of the polarization azimuth and apply the model to interpret the experimental results. In our experiments, it is found that, in contrast to the case where $\varphi_p=0$ and the light polarization vector is parallel to the initial easy axis, at $\varphi_p\ne 0$, the pronounced purely photoinduced reorientation occurs outside the interelectrode gaps. It is also observed that, in the regions between electrodes with non-zero electric field, the dynamics of reorientation slows down with $\varphi_p$ and the sense of easy axis rotation is independent of the sign of $\varphi_p$.

We theoretically study the kinetics of photoinduced reordering triggered by linearly polarized (LP) reorienting light in thin azo-dye films that were initially illuminated with LP ultraviolet (UV) pumping beam. The process of reordering is treated as a rotational diffusion of molecules in the light intensity-dependent mean-field potential. The two dimensional diffusion model which is based on the free energy rotational Fokker-Planck equation and describes the regime of in-plane reorientation is generalized to analyze the dynamics of the azo-dye order parameter tensor at varying polarization azimuth of the reorienting light. It is found that, in the photosteady state, the intensity of LP reorienting light determines the scalar order parameter (the largest eigenvalue of the order parameter tensor), whereas the steady state orientation of the corresponding eigenvector (the in-plane principal axis) depends solely on the polarization azimuth. We show that, under certain conditions, reorientation takes place only if the reorienting light intensity exceeds its critical value. Such threshold behavior is predicted to occur in the bistability region provided that the initial principal axis lies in the polarization plane of reorienting light. The model is used to interpret the experimental data on the light-induced azimuthal gliding of liquid-crystal easy axis on photoaligned azo-dye substrates.

Electro-optical properties of deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal (DHFLC) cells are studied by using a general theoretical approach to polarization gratings in which the transmission and reflection matrices of diffraction orders are explicitly related to the evolution operator of equations for the Floquet harmonics. In the short-pitch approximation, a DHFLC cell is shown to be optically equivalent to a uniformly anisotropic biaxial layer where one of the optical axes is normal to the substrates. For in-plane anisotropy, orientation of the optical axes and birefringence are both determined by the voltage applied across the cell and represent the parameters that govern the transmittance of normally incident light passing through crossed polarizers. We calculate the transmittance as a function of the applied voltage and compare the computed curves with the experimental data. The theoretical and experimental results are found to be in good agreement.

The models are employed to interpret the irradiation time dependence of the absorption order parameters extracted from the available experimental data by using the exact solution to the light transmission problem for a biaxially anisotropic absorbing layer. We observe a sequence of the anchoring transitions in nematic liquid crystals (NLC) sandwiched between the hydrophobic polyimide substrates treated with the plasma beam. There is a pronounced continuous transition from homeotropic to low tilted (nearly planar) alignment with the easy axis parallel to the incidence plane of the plasma beam (the zenithal transition) that takes place as the exposure dose increases. In NLC with positive dielectric anisotropy, a further increase in the exposure dose results in in-plane reorientation of the easy axis by 90 degrees (the azimuthal transition). This transition occurs through the two-fold degenerated alignment characteristic for the second order anchoring transitions. In contrast to critical behavior of anchoring, the contact angle of NLC and water on the treated substrates monotonically declines with the exposure dose. It follows that the surface concentration of hydrophobic chains decreases continuously. The anchoring transitions under consideration are qualitatively interpreted by using a simple phenomenological model of competing easy axes which is studied by analyzing anchoring diagrams of the generalized polar and non-polar anchoring models.

We study both theoretically and experimentally switching dynamics in surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells with asymmetric boundary conditions. In these cells the bounding surfaces are treated differently to produce asymmetry in their anchoring properties. Our electro-optic measurements of the switching voltage thresholds that are determined by the peaks of the reversal polarization current reveal the frequency dependent shift of the hysteresis loop. We examine the predictions of the uniform dynamical model with the anchoring energy taken into account. It is found that the asymmetry effects are dominated by the polar contribution to the anchoring energy. Frequency dependence of the voltage thresholds is studied by analyzing the properties of time-periodic solutions to the dynamical equation (cycles). For this purpose, we apply the method that uses the parameterized half-period mappings for the approximate model and relate the cycles to the fixed points of the composition of two half-period mappings. The cycles are found to be unstable and can only be formed when the driving frequency is lower than its critical value. The polar anchoring parameter is estimated by making a comparison between the results of modelling and the experimental data for the shift vs frequency curve. For a double-well potential considered as a deformation of the Rapini-Papoular potential, the branch of stable cycles emerges in the low frequency region separated by the gap from the high frequency interval for unstable cycles.

We study both theoretically and experimentally anchoring properties of photoaligning azo-dye films in contact with a nematic liquid crystal depending on photoinduced ordering of azo-dye molecules. In the mean field approximation, we found that the bare surface anchoring energy linearly depends on the azo-dye order parameter and the azimuthal anchoring strength decays to zero in the limit of vanishing photoinduced ordering. From the absorption dichroism spectra measured in the azo-dye films that are prepared from the azo-dye derivative with polymerizable terminal groups (SDA-2) we obtain dependence of the dichroic ratio on the irradiation dose. We also measure the polar and azimuthal anchoring strengths in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cells aligned by the azo-dye films and derive the anchoring strengths as functions of the dichroic ratio. Though linear fitting of the experimental data for both anchoring strengths gives reasonably well results, it, in contradiction with the theory, predicts vanishing of the azimuthal anchoring strength at certain nonzero value of the azo-dye order parameter. By using a simple phenomenological model we show that this discrepancy can be attributed to the difference between the surface and bulk order parameters in the films.

We consider helical configurations of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) sandwiched between two substrates with homogeneous director orientation favored at both confining plates. We study the CLC twist wavenumber $q$ characterizing the helical structures in relation to the free twisting number $q_0$ which determines the equilibrium value of CLC pitch, $P_0=2π/q_0$. We investigate the instability mechanism underlying transitions between helical structures with different spiral half-turn numbers. Stability analysis shows that for equal finite anchoring strengths this mechanism can be dominated by in-plane director fluctuations. In this case the metastable helical configurations are separated by the energy barriers and the transitions can be described as the director slippage through these barriers. We extend our analysis to the case of an asymmetric CLC cell in which the anchoring strengths at the two substrates are different. The asymmetry introduces two qualitatively novel effects: (a) the intervals of twist wavenumbers representing locally stable configurations with adjacent helix half-turn numbers are now separated by the instability gaps; and (b) sufficiently large asymmetry, when the difference between azimuthal anchoring extrapolation lengths exceeds the thickness of the cell, will suppress the jump-like behaviour of the twist wavenumber.

We study dynamical optical response of a nematic liquid crystal cell that undergoes the splay-bend transition after applying the voltage across the cell. We formulate a simplified model that takes into account both the flexoelectric coupling and the surface rotational viscosity. The dynamic equations of the model were solved numerically to calculate temporal evolution of the director profile and the transmittance. We evaluate the response time as a function of a number of parameters characterising dielectric and elastic anisotropies, asymmetry of the surface pretilt angles, anchoring energy, surface rotational viscosity and flexoelectricity.

We study the effects of droplet ordering in initial optical transmittance through polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films prepared in the presence of an electrical field. The experimental data are interpreted by using a theoretical approach to light scattering in PDLC films that explicitly relates optical transmittance and the order parameters characterizing both the orientational structures inside bipolar droplets and orientational distribution of the droplets. The theory relies on the Rayleigh-Gans approximation and uses the Percus-Yevick approximation to take into account the effects due to droplet positional correlations.

We analyze stability of the planar orientational structure in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cell with planar anchoring conditions at both substrates. Specifically, we study the instabilities of the ground state caused by surface elasticity at large saddle-splay elastic constant, $K_{24}$. For relatively small $K_{24}$ violating the Ericksen inequalities the theory predicts that the critical fluctuation mode of the wavelength, $λ_c$, will render the structure unstable when the thickness of the cell is below its critical value, $d_c$. The parity of the critical mode changes as the twist-splay ratio $K_2/K_1$ is passing through the unity. Further increase of $K_{24}$ beyond the second threshold value, $4K_1K_2/(K_1+K_2)$, leads to the instability with respect to the short wavelength fluctuations regardless of the cell thickness. We compute the critical thickness and the critical wavelength as functions of $K_{24}$, the twist-splay ratio and the azimuthal anchoring strength.

We apply experimental technique based on the combination of methods dealing with principal refractive indices and absorption coefficients to study the photoinduced 3D orientational order in the films of liquid crystalline (LC) azopolymers. The technique is used to identify 3D orientational configurations of trans azobenzene chromophores and to characterize the degree of ordering in terms of order parameters. We study two types of LC azopolymers which form structures with preferred in-plane and out-of-plane alignment of azochromophores, correspondingly. Using irradiation with the polarized light of two different wavelengths we find that the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy can be dominated by either photo-reorientation or photoselection mechanisms depending on the wavelength. We formulate the phenomenological model describing the kinetics of photoinduced anisotropy in terms of the isomer concentrations and the order parameter tensor. We present the numerical results for absorption coefficients that are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The model is also used to interpret the effect of changing the mechanism with the wavelength of the pumping light.

We consider director configurations of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cells with two plane confining substrates. Exact solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations for out-of-plane orientations of the easy axes that correspond to inhomogeneous conical structures of CLC director are derived. We study dependence of the CLC twist wavenumber on the free twisting number assuming that anchoring energies at the substrates are either equal or different. In both cases this dependence is found to be generally discontinuous with hysteresis loops and bistability effects involved. For CLC cells with identical substrates and planar anchoring conditions the jump-like behaviour only disappears in the weak anchoring limit. Contrastingly, when the anchoring strengths are different, there is the finite value of anchoring below which the dependence becomes continuous. Another effect is the appearance of the gap between the adjacent twist wavenumber intervals representing locally stable director configurations. We calculate the critical value of anchoring asymmetry and present the results of numerical calculations.

We consider the effect of photoinduced optical anisotropy (POA) in azopolymers. Using a unified approach to the kinetics of photo-reorientation we discuss the assumptions underlying the known theoretical models of POA and formulate a tractable phenomenological model in terms of angular redistribution probabilities and order parameter correlation functions. The model takes into account biaxiality effects and long term stability of POA in azopolymers. It predicts that under certain conditions two different mechanisms, photoorientation and photoselection, will dominate POA depending on the wavelength of pumping light. By using available experimental data, we employ the model to compute dependencies of principal absorption coefficients on the illumination time. Our calculations clearly indicate the different regimes of POA and the numerical results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

This is the second paper in a series on light scattering from optically anisotropic scatterers embedded in an isotropic medium. The apparently complex T-matrix theory involving mixing of angular momentum components turns out to be an efficient approach to calculating scattering in these systems. We present preliminary results of numerical calculations of the scattering by spherical droplets in some simple cases. The droplets contain optically anisotropic material with local radial or uniform anisotropy. We concentrate on cases in which the scattering is due only to the local optical anisotropy within the scatterer. For radial anisotropy we find non-monotonic dependence of the scattering cross-section on the degree of anisotropy can occur in a regime for which both the Rayleigh and semi-classical theories are inapplicable. For uniform anisotropy the cross-section is strongly dependent on the angle between the incident light and the optical axis, and for larger droplets this dependence is non-monotonic.

We extend the T-matrix approach to light scattering by spherical particles to some simple cases in which the scatterers are optically anisotropic. Specifically we consider cases in which the spherical particles include radially and uniformly anisotropic layers. We find that in both cases the T-matrix theory can be formulated using a modified T-matrix ansatz with suitably defined modes. In a uniformly anisotropic medium we derive these modes by relating the wave packet representation and expansions of electromagnetic field over spherical harmonics. The resulting wave functions are deformed spherical harmonics that represent solutions of the Maxwell equations. We use these modes to express the equations for the T-matrix elements in terms of computationally tractable coefficient functions.

The photoinduced 3D orientational structures in the films of liquid crystalline polyester, containing azobenzene side groups, are studied both experimentally and theoretically. By using the null ellipsometry and the UV absorption methods, preferential in-plane alignment of the azobenzene fragments and in-plane reorientation under irradiation with polarized UV light are established. The uniaxial and biaxial orientational configurations of the azobenzene chromophores are detected. The biaxiality is observed in the intermediate stages of irradiation, whereas the uniaxial structure is maintained in the photosaturated state. The components of the order parameter tensor of the azobenzene fragments are estimated for the initial state and after different doses of irradiation. The proposed theory takes into account biaxiality of the induced structures. Numerical analysis of the master equations for the order parameter tensor is found to yield the results that are in good agreement with the experimental dependencies of the order parameter components on the illumination time.
