The layered antiferromagnet FePS$_3$ has been shown to undergo a structural transition under pressure linked to an insulator-metal transition, with two incompatible models previously proposed for the highest-pressure structure. We present a study of the high-pressure crystal structures of FePS$_3$ using both single-crystal and powder x-ray diffraction. We show that the highest pressure transition involves a collapse of the inter-planar spacing of this material, along with an increase in symmetry from a monoclinic to a trigonal structure, to the exclusion of other models. The extent of this volume collapse is shown to be sensitive to the presence of a helium pressure medium in the sample environment, indicating that consideration of such experimental factors is important for understanding high-pressure behaviours in this material.

Two-dimensional materials have proven to be a prolific breeding ground of new and unstudied forms of magnetism and unusual metallic states, particularly when tuned between their insulating and metallic phases. In this paper we present work on a new metal to insulator transition system FePS$_3$ . This compound is a two-dimensional van-der-Waals antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. Here we report the discovery of an insulator-metal transition in FePS$_3$, as evidenced by x-ray diffraction and electrical transport measurements, using high pressure as a tuning parameter. Two structural phase transitions are observed in the x-ray diffraction data as a function of pressure and resistivity measurements show evidence of onset of a metallic state at high pressures. We propose models for the two new structures that can successfully explain the x-ray diffraction patterns.

The lanthanide orthoborates, $Ln$BO$_3$, $Ln$ = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb crystallise in a monoclinic structure with the magnetic $Ln^{3+}$ forming an edge-sharing triangular lattice. The triangles are scalene, however all deviations from the ideal equilateral geometry are less than 1.5%. The bulk magnetic properties are studied using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and isothermal magnetisation measurements. Heat capacity measurements show ordering features at $T \leq$ 2 K for $Ln$ = Gd, Tb, Dy, Er. No ordering is observed for YbBO$_3$ at $T \geq$ 0.4 K and HoBO$_3$ is proposed to have a non-magnetic singlet state. Isothermal magnetisation measurements indicate isotropic Gd$^{3+}$ spins and strong single-ion anisotropy for the other $Ln^{3+}$. The change in magnetic entropy has been evaluated to determine the magnetocaloric effect in these materials. GdBO$_3$ and DyBO$_3$ are found to be competitive magnetocaloric materials in the liquid helium temperature regime.

Since the discovery of superconductivity in LaFePO in 2006, numerous iron-based superconductors have been identified within diverse structure families, all of which combine iron with a group-V (pnictogen) or group-VI (chalco- gen) element. Unconventional superconductivity is extremely rare among transition metal compounds outside these layered iron systems and the cuprates, and it is almost universally associated with highly anisotropic electronic properties and nearly 2D Fermi surface geometries. The iron-based intermetallic YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ features a 3D Fermi surface and a strongly enhanced low temperature heat capacity, which signals strong electronic correlations. We present data from a new generation of high quality samples of YFe$_2$Ge$_2$, which show superconducting transition anomalies below 1.8 K in thermodynamic as well as transport measurements, establishing that superconductivity is intrinsic in this layered iron compound outside the known superconducting iron pnictide or chalcogenide families. The Fermi surface geometry of YFe$_2$Ge$_2$ resembles that of KFe$_2$As$_2$ in the high pressure collapsed tetragonal phase, in which superconductivity at temperatures as high as 10 K has recently been reported, suggesting an underlying connection between the two systems.

The Gd3Ga5-xAlxO12 (0 < x < 5) solid solution has been prepared using ceramic synthesis routes and the structural and magnetic properties investigated using X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, chi, and isothermal magnetisation, M(H), measurements. Our results indicate a contraction of the unit cell and more significant antiferromagnetic interactions as x increases. Despite the decrease in the magnetic polarisation on application of a field and the corresponding decrease in the change in the magnetic entropy we find that Gd3Al5O12 has a significantly higher observed (17%) and theoretical (14%) DS per unit mass than Gd3Ga5O12. Per unit volume the theoretical increase in DS (7%) is offset by the increased antiferromagnetic interactions in Gd3Al5O12. The differences in DS are driven by a decrease in both the mass and density as Al ions replace Ga ions. These results highlight the importance of changes to the crystal structure when considering materials for solid state magnetic cooling.
