Abstract:
The Hall effect is a powerful tool for investigating carrier type and density. For single-band materials, the Hall coefficient is traditionally expressed simply by $R_H^{-1} = -en$, where $e$ is the charge of the carrier, and $n$ is the concentration. The Hall effect is a powerful tool for investigating carrier type and density. For single-band materials, the Hall coefficient is traditionally expressed simply by $R_H^{-1} = -en$, where $e$ is the charge of the carrier, and $n$ is the concentration. However, it is well known that in the critical region near a quantum phase transition, as it was demonstrated for cuprates and heavy fermions, the Hall coefficient exhibits strong temperature and doping dependencies, which can not be described by such a simple expression, and the interpretation of the Hall coefficient for Fe-based superconductors is also problematic. Here, we investigate thin films of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with compressive and tensile in-plane strain in a wide range of Co doping. Such in-plane strain changes the band structure of the compounds, resulting in various shifts of the whole phase diagram as a function of Co doping. We show that the resultant phase diagrams for different strain states can be mapped onto a single phase diagram with the Hall number. This universal plot is attributed to the critical fluctuations in multiband systems near the antiferromagnetic transition, which may suggest a direct link between magnetic and superconducting properties in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system.

We tested oxidized titanium layers as barriers for hybrid Josephson junctions with high $I_cR_n$-products and for the preparation of junctions for tunneling spectroscopy. For that we firstly prepared junctions with conventional superconductor electrodes lead and niobium, respectively. By tuning the barrier thickness we were able to change the junctions' behavior from a Josephson junction to tunnel-like behavior applicable for quasi-particle spectroscopy. Subsequently, we transferred the technology to junctions using Co-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition as base electrode and evaporated Pb as counter electrode. For barriers with a thickness of 1.5\,nm we observe clear Josephson effects with $I_cR_n$\,$\approx$\,90\,$μ$V at 4.2\,K. These junctions behave SNS'-like and are dominated by Andreev reflection transport mechanism. For junctions with barrier thickness of 2.0\,nm and higher no Josephson but SIS'- or SINS'-like behavior with a tunnel-like conductance spectrum was observed.

To investigate the superconducting properties of iron pnictides we prepared planar hybrid SNS' junctions in thin film technology with a pnictide base electrode, a gold barrier layer and a lead counter electrode. Our design allows characterization of the electrodes and the junction independently in a 4-probe method. We show how both electrodes influence the measured spectra due to their spreading resistance. While the Pb electrode has a constant resistance above its $T_c$, the contribution of the pnictide electrode is clearly current-dependent and thus it needs a more advanced method to be corrected. We present an empirical method, which is simple to apply and allows to deal with the spreading resistance in our junctions to recalculate the actual conductance and voltage of one junction at given temperature.

As counter electrode we used a lead indium alloy, while the normal metal layer was formed by thin gold films. Temperature dependent measurements of the electrical conductivity were strongly influenced by the properties of the electrodes. We developed a junction structure that allows us to characterize the electrodes, too, including the behavior of their normal state resistance in order to correct their influences on the conduction spectra. The corrected conductivity of the junction was described within an extended BTK-model and shows a behavior dominated by Andreev reflexion.

Abstract:
The implementation of an Fe buffer layer is a promising way to obtain epitaxial growth of Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122). However, the crystalline quality and the superconducting properties of Co-doped Ba-122 are influenced by the Fe buffer layer thickness, dFe. We investigate the relaxation of rectangular wrinkled thin films intrinsically containing an initial strain gradient. A preferential rolling direction, depending on wrinkle geometry and strain gradient, is theoretically predicted and experimentally verified. In contrast to typical rolled-up nanomembranes, which bend perpendicular to the longer edge of rectangular patterns, we find a regime where rolling parallel to the long edge of the wrinkled film is favorable. A non-uniform radius of the rolled-up film is well reproduced by elasticity theory and simulations of the film relaxation using a finite element method.

Here, we present hybrid Josephson junctions with a BaFe_{1.8}Co_{0.2}As_2 thin film electrode, an Au barrier and a PbIn counter electrode. The junctions show RSJ-like current-voltage characteristics up to the critical temperature of the counter electrode of about 7.2K. The temperature dependence of the critical current, IC, does not show an Ambegaokar-Baratoff behavior. Well-pronounced Shapiro steps are observed at microwave frequencies of 10-18GHz. Assuming an excess current, I_ex, of 200 μA at 4.2K we get an effective I_C R_N product of 6 μV.

The magnetization reversal in stripe-like exchange bias patterned $\rm Ni_{81}Fe_{19}/IrMn$ thin films was investigated by complementary inductive and high resolution magneto optical magnetometry, magneto optical Kerr microscopy, and polarized neutron reflectometry to clarify the effects of competing interfacial exchange bias and lateral interface contributions. Structures of varying ferromagnetic layer thickness and stripe period were analyzed systematically at the frozen-in domain state of oppositely aligned stripe magnetization. For all samples the mean magnetization of the magnetic hybrid structures was found to be aligned nearly orthogonally with respect to the stripe axis and the set exchange bias direction. Due to the interaction of interfacial coupling, exchange, and magneto-static energy contributions, the opening angle of neighboring stripe magnetizations increases with decreasing ferromagnetic layer thickness and increasing stripe period. The experimental observations are in agreement with an earlier proposed model for designing micro-patterned exchange bias films.
