Abstract:
The microscopic magnetism in the helical, the conical and the ferro-magnetically polarized phases in an itinerant helical magnet, MnSi, has been studied by an extended 29Si NMR at zero field and under external magnetic fields. The temperature dependence of staggered moment, M_Q(T), determined by the 29Si NMR frequency, nu(T), and nuclear relaxation rate, 1/T_1(T) is in general accord with the SCR…

The microscopic magnetism in the helical, the conical and the ferro-magnetically polarized phases in an itinerant helical magnet, MnSi, has been studied by an extended 29Si NMR at zero field and under external magnetic fields. The temperature dependence of staggered moment, M_Q(T), determined by the 29Si NMR frequency, nu(T), and nuclear relaxation rate, 1/T_1(T) is in general accord with the SCR theory for weak itinerant ferromagnetic metals and its extension. The external field dependence of resonance frequency, nu(H), follows a vector sum of the contributions from atomic hyperfine and macroscopic fields with a field induced moment characteristic to the itinerant magnets. A discontinuous jump of the resonance frequency at the critical field, H_c, between the conical and the polarized phases has also been found that suggests a first order like change of the electronic states at H_c.

By directly observing antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic phase, we have shown that the characteristic energy depends on temperature as c_1 + c_2 T^{3/2}, where c_1 and c_2 are constants. This T^{3/2} dependence demonstrates that the present strongly correlated d-electron antiferromagnet clearly shows the criticality of the spin-density-wave quantum phase transition in three space dimensions.

Highly anisotropic properties of CeIr$_3$Si$_2$ have been observed by the magnetization $M$($B$), electrical resistivity $ρ$, and specific heat measurements on a single-crystalline sample. This compound with an orthorhombic structure having zigzag chains of Ce ions along the a-axis undergos magnetic transitions at 3.9 K and 3.1 K. At 0.3 K, metamagnetic transitions occur at 0.68 T and 1.3 T for $B$$//$$b$ and 0.75 T for $B$$//$$c$. Easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy is manifested as $M$($B//b$) $\cong$ $M$($B//c$) $\cong$ 11$M$($B//a$) at $B$ = 5 T. Electrical resistivity is also anisotropic; $ρ_{b}$ $\cong$ $ρ_{c}$ $\ge$ 2$ρ_{a}$. The magnetic part of $ρ$ exhibits a double-peak structure with maxima at 15 K and 250 K. The magnetic entropy at $T$$\rm_{N1}$ = 3.9 K is a half of $R$ln2. These observations are ascribable to the combination of the Kondo effect with $T$$\rm_{K}$ $\sim$ 20 K and a strong crystal field effect. The analysis of $M$($B$) and paramagnetic susceptibility revealed unusually large energy splitting of 500 K and 1600 K for the two excited doublets, respectively.

V$_{1.98}$Cr$_{0.02}$O$_{3}$ exhibits low binding energy "satellites" to the V $2p$ "main lines" in the metallic phase, which are suppressed in the antiferromagnetic insulator phase. In contrast, the Cu $2p$ spectra of Bi2212 do not show temperature dependent features, but a comparison with soft X-ray PES indicates a large increase in the $2p^5 3d^9$ "satellites" or $3d^9$ weight in the bulk. Cluster model calculations, including full multiplet structure and a screening channel derived from the coherent band at the Fermi energy, give very satisfactory agreement with experiments.

It is established that the transition from antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) to antiferromagnetic metallic phases near $x_{\rm c}\approx 0.05$ is not quantum critical but is discontinuous with a jump of the transition temperature. In the AFI phase at 4.2 K, we observed the satellite in the zero-field $^{51}$V NMR spectrum around 181 MHz in addition to the ``host'' resonance around 203 MHz. The satellite is also observable in the paramagnetic metallic phase of the x = 0.055 sample. We associated the satellite with the V sites near Ti which are in the V$^{3+}$-like oxidation state but has different temperature dependence of the NMR shift from that of the host V site. The host d-spin susceptibility for x = 0.055 decreases below $\sim$60 K but remains finite in the low-temperature limit.

The signal appears as the satellites in the Cu NQR spectrum, and has a suppressed nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate indicative of a singlet correlation rather than an enhanced magnetic correlation near the doping center. Signal loss of Cu nuclei with no neighboring Si is also observed. We conclude from these observations that the doping-induced moments are not in the vicinity of the doping center but rather away from it.

Low-frequency spin dynamics in the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin-chain compound α-VO(PO_3)_2 has been studied by means of 31P NMR. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at the P site exhibits H^{-1/2} dependence on the applied magnetic field (H) at temperatures (T) well above the intrachain coupling strength J/k_{B} = 3.50 K indicating one-dimensional diffusive spin dynamics. The diffusive contribution to 1/T_1 decreases on cooling as electronic spins acquire short-range antiferromagnetic correlations within the chain, and vanishes almost entirely around T \approx J/k_{B}. This is accompanied by an apparent increase of the spin-diffusion constant from the value expected in the classical limit. On the other hand, the field-independent part of 1/T_1 increases with decreasing temperature, which may be a precursor for the true long-range antiferromagnetic ordering found below T_{N} = 1.93 \pm 0.01 K.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of 31P and 51V nuclei has been measured in a spin-1/2 alternating-chain compound (VO)_2P_2O_7. By analyzing the temperature variation of the 31P NMR spectra, we have found that (VO)_2P_2O_7 has two independent spin components with different spin-gap energies. The spin gaps are determined from the temperature dependence of the shifts at 31P and 51V sites to be 35 K and 68 K, which are in excellent agreement with those observed in the recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments [A.W. Garrett et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 745 (1997)]. This suggests that (VO)_2P_2O_7 is composed of two magnetic subsystems showing distinct magnetic excitations, which are associated with the two crystallographically-inequivalent V chains running along the b axis. The difference of the spin-gap energies between the chains is attributed to the small differences in the V-V distances, which may result in the different exchange alternation in each magnetic chain. The exchange interactions in each alternating chain are estimated and are discussed based on the empirical relation between the exchange interaction and the interatomic distance.
