The Bi${-}$Ni binary system has been of interest due to possible unconventional superconductivity aroused therein, such as time-reversal symmetry breaking in Bi/Ni bilayers or the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in Bi$_3$Ni crystals. While Ni acts as a ferromagnetic element in such systems, the role of strong spin-orbit-coupling element Bi in superconductivity has remained unexplored. In this work, we systematically studied the effects of Bi stoichiometry on the superconductivity of Bi$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$ thin films (${x} \approx$ 0.5 to 0.9) fabricated via a composition-spread approach. The superconducting phase map of Bi$_x$Ni$_{1-x}$ thin films exhibited a superconducting composition region attributable to the intermetallic Bi$_3$Ni phase with different amount of excess Bi, revealed by synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis. Interestingly, the mixed phase region with Bi$_3$Ni and Bi showed unusual increases in the superconducting transition temperature and residual resistance ratio as more Bi impurities were included, with the maximum ${T}_{c}$ ($=$ 4.2 K) observed at $x \approx$ 0.79. A correlation analysis of structural, electrical, and magneto-transport characteristics across the composition variation revealed that the unusual superconducting $"$dome$"$ is due to two competing roles of Bi$\colon$ impurity scattering and carrier doping. We found that the carrier doping effect is dominant in the mild doping regime (0.74 $\leq {x} \leq$ 0.79), while impurity scattering becomes more pronounced at larger Bi stoichiometry.

Combinatorial spread libraries offer a unique approach to explore evolution of materials properties over the broad concentration, temperature, and growth parameter spaces. However, the traditional limitation of this approach is the requirement for the read-out of functional properties across the library. Here we demonstrate the application of automated Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) for the exploration of the physics in the SmxBi1-xFeO3 system with the ferroelectric-antiferroelectric morphotropic phase boundary. This approach relies on the synergy of the quantitative nature of PFM and the implementation of automated experiments that allows PFM-based gird sampling over macroscopic samples. The concentration dependence of pertinent ferroelectric parameters has been determined and used to develop the mathematical framework based on Ginzburg-Landau theory describing the evolution of these properties across the concentration space. We pose that combination of automated scanning probe microscope and combinatorial spread library approach will emerge as an efficient research paradigm to close the characterization gap in the high-throughput materials discovery. We make the data sets open to the community and hope that will stimulate other efforts to interpret and understand the physics of these systems.

The rapid growth of automated and autonomous instrumentations brings forth an opportunity for the co-orchestration of multimodal tools, equipped with multiple sequential detection methods, or several characterization tools to explore identical samples. This can be exemplified by the combinatorial libraries that can be explored in multiple locations by multiple tools simultaneously, or downstream characterization in automated synthesis systems. In the co-orchestration approaches, information gained in one modality should accelerate the discovery of other modalities. Correspondingly, the orchestrating agent should select the measurement modality based on the anticipated knowledge gain and measurement cost. Here, we propose and implement a co-orchestration approach for conducting measurements with complex observables such as spectra or images. The method relies on combining dimensionality reduction by variational autoencoders with representation learning for control over the latent space structure, and integrated into iterative workflow via multi-task Gaussian Processes (GP). This approach further allows for the native incorporation of the system's physics via a probabilistic model as a mean function of the GP. We illustrated this method for different modalities of piezoresponse force microscopy and micro-Raman on combinatorial $Sm-BiFeO_3$ library. However, the proposed framework is general and can be extended to multiple measurement modalities and arbitrary dimensionality of measured signals. The analysis code that supports the funding is publicly available at https://github.com/Slautin/2024_Co-orchestration.

Although the convergence of high-performance computing, automation, and machine learning has significantly altered the materials design timeline, transformative advances in functional materials and acceleration of their design will require addressing the deficiencies that currently exist in materials informatics, particularly a lack of standardized experimental data management. The challenges associated with experimental data management are especially true for combinatorial materials science, where advancements in automation of experimental workflows have produced datasets that are often too large and too complex for human reasoning. The data management challenge is further compounded by the multi-modal and multi-institutional nature of these datasets, as they tend to be distributed across multiple institutions and can vary substantially in format, size, and content. To adequately map a materials design space from such datasets, an ideal materials data infrastructure would contain data and metadata describing i) synthesis and processing conditions, ii) characterization results, and iii) property and performance measurements. Here, we present a case study for the low-barrier development of such a dashboard that enables standardized organization, analysis, and visualization of a large data lake consisting of combinatorial datasets of synthesis and processing conditions, X-ray diffraction patterns, and materials property measurements generated at several different institutions. While this dashboard was developed specifically for data-driven thermoelectric materials discovery, we envision the adaptation of this prototype to other materials applications, and, more ambitiously, future integration into an all-encompassing materials data management infrastructure.

The single phase Mn$_3$Ga (T$_\mathrm{c}$ $\simeq$ 780 K) is synthesized, while Mn$_2$Ga (T$_\mathrm{c}$ $\simeq$ 710 K) is found to coexist with a near-stoichiometric room temperature paramagnetic Mn$_9$Ga$_5$~($\approx$ 15 \%) phase due to its lower formation energy, as confirmed from our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The alloys show hard magnetic behavior with large room temperature spontaneous magnetization m$_s$(80 kOe) = 1.63 (0.83) $μ_\mathrm{B}$/f.u. and coercivity H$_\mathrm{c}$ = 4.28 (3.35) kOe for Mn$_3$Ga (Mn$_2$Ga). The magnetic properties are further investigated till T$_\mathrm{c}$ and the H$_\mathrm{c}$ (T) analysis by Stoner-Wohlfarth model shows the nucleation mechanism for the magnetization reversal. The experimental results are well supported by DFT calculations, which reveal that the ground state of D0$_{22}$ Mn$_2$Ga is achieved by the removal of Mn-atoms from full Heusler Mn$_3$Ga structure in accordance with half Heusler alloy picture.

The power law behavior of inverse magentic susceptibility, 1/$χ$(T) with exponent $λ= 0.18(2)$ confirm the GP in the regime T$_C$ $<$ T $\leq$ T$_G$ = 279.0(5) K. Moreover, the detailed critical analysis via modified Arrott plot method exhibits unrealistic critical exponents $β$ = 0.77(1), $γ$ = 1.59(2) and $δ= 3.06(4)$, in corroboration with magneto-caloric study. The abnormal exponent values have been viewed in context of ferromagnetic-Griffiths phase transition. The GP has been further analyzed using Bray model, which yields a reliable value of $β$ = 0.19(2), belonging to the two-dimensional (2D) XYh$_4$ universality class with strong anisotropy present in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. The present study proposes Bray model as a possible tool to investigate the critical behavior for Griffiths ferromagnets in place of conventional Arrott plot analysis. The possible origins of GP and its correlation with insulating nature of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ have been discussed.

Stability of lubricating fluid infused slippery surfaces is a concern for scientists and engineers and attempts are being made for its improvement. Lubricating oil coated slippery surface for aqueous drops is one of the important candidates in this class and their stability needs be improved to make them useful for practical applications. Cloaking of water drops with thin lubricant layer results in the loss of lubricant leading to deterioration of slippery behavior. Surface roughness or porosity provides larger surface area to the lubricating fluid and would to affect the stability of the lubricating film. Here we report the effect of surface roughness, from tens of nanometer to few microns, on the stability of slippery surface. Samples with small nanoscale roughness show improved performance in terms of contact angle hysteresis, critical tilt angle and slip velocity. Whereas large roughness samples show poorer performance compared to small nanoscale roughness and smooth samples. Small nanoscale roughness samples also show relatively slower deterioration against loss of lubricant during water flow. Once completely lost, the slippery behavior can be restored again simply by coating the sample again by the lubricating fluid.

We demonstrate a novel technique to fabricate mechanically tunable slippery surfaces using one dimensional (anisotropic) elastic wrinkles. Such wrinkles show tunable topography (amplitude) on the application of mechanical strain. Following Nepenthes pitcher plants, lubricating fluid infused solid surfaces show excellent slippery behavior for test liquid drops. Therefore combining the above two i.e. infusing suitable lubricating fluid on elastic wrinkles would enable us to fabricate mechanically tunable slippery surfaces. Completely stretched (flat) wrinkles have uniform coating of lubricating fluid whereas completely relaxed (full amplitude) wrinkles have most of the lubricating oil in the wrinkle grooves. Therefore water drops on completely stretched surface show excellent slippery behavior whereas on completely relaxed surface they show very poor slippery behavior. Therefore continuous variation of wrinkle stretching provide reversibly tunable slippery behavior on such system. Since the winkles are one dimensional, they show anisotropic tunability of slippery behavior depending upon whether test liquid drops slip parallel or perpendicular to the wrinkles.

In the recent years many research groups have studied slippery properties on lubricating fluid infused rough surfaces using hydrophobic substrates. These surfaces show excellent slippery behaviour for water and other liquids. Here we demonstrate a simple method to fabricate stable slippery surfaces based on silicone oil coated hydrophilic samples. At room temperature, as prepared samples exhibit non-slippery behaviour due to sinking of water drops inside silicone oil layer because of inherently hydrophilic silicon substrate. Subsequent annealing at higher temperatures provides covalent bonding of silicone molecules at silicon surface making the surface hydrophobic which was confirmed by lubricant wash tests. So the silicone oil coated annealed samples show excellent water repellency, very low contact angle hysteresis and very good slippery behavior. But these surfaces show poor oil stability against drops flow due to cloaking of the oil around water drops which can be prevented by using drops of larger volume or continuous flow of water.

We report the evolution of magnetic moment as well as magnetic anisotropy with crystalline order in Co$_2$MnSi thin films grown on $(100)$ MgO by pulsed laser deposition. The films become more ordered as the annealing temperature ($T_A$) increases from 400 to 600 $^0$C. The extent of \emph{L}$2_1$ ordering in the films annealed at 600 $^0$C is $\approx 96%$. The static magnetization measurements by vibrating sample magnetometry shows a maximum moment of 4.95 $μ_B$ per formula unit with low coercivity ($H_C$ $\approx$ 65 Oe) in the films annealed at 600 $^0$C. A rigorous analysis of the azimuthal and polar angle dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measured at several temperatures allows determination of various anisotropy fields relevant to our system as a function of $T_A$. Finally, we have evaluated the exchange stiffness constant down to 100 K using spin wave modes in FMR spectra. We have also estimated the exchange energies as well as stiffness constant by varying the lattice parameter \emph{ab-initio} using the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method.
