We study the interplay between Coulomb blockade and superconductivity in a tunable superconductor-superconductor-normal metal single-electron transistor. The device is realized by connecting the superconducting island via an oxide barrier to the normal metal lead and with a break junction to the superconducting lead. The latter enables Cooper pair transport and (multiple) Andreev reflection. We show that those processes are relevant also far above the superconducting gap and that signatures of Coulomb blockade may reoccur at high bias while they are absent for small bias in the strong-coupling regime. Our experimental findings agree with simulations using a master equation approach in combination with the full counting statistics of multiple Andreev reflection.

Here we report high-field magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy from three emission lines (Q1, Q2 and Q*) of He-ion induced sulfur vacancies in monolayer $\text{MoS}_2$. Analysis of the asymmetric PL lineshapes in combination with the diamagnetic shift of Q1 and Q2 yields a consistent picture of localized emitters with a wavefunction extent of $\sim$ 3.5 nm. The distinct valley-Zeeman splitting in out-of-plane $B$-fields and the brightening of dark states through in-plane $B$-fields necessitates spin-valley selectivity of the defect states and lifted spin-degeneracy at zero field. Comparing our results to ab-initio calculations identifies the nature of Q1 and Q2 and suggests that Q* is the emission from a chemically functionalized defect. Analysis of the optical degree of circular polarization reveals that the Fermi level is a parameter that enables the tunability of the emitter. These results show that defects in 2D semiconductors may be utilized for quantum technologies.

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is extensively studied, but the explanation for Hall plateau widths and excitation energy gaps remains elusive. We study the effective theory of FQHE built upon experimental inputs of Hall current distribution, edge dynamics, and many-body correlations. We argue that correlated composites of integer spin, comprising electrons and their images, localized at the edge of the incompressible strip are the basic transport entity. We show in the lowest Landau level that Zeeman interactions of these composites produce all odd denominator plateaus and effective fractional charges. Utilizing field-dependent chemical potential and effective g-factor, we fully explain the observed Hall resistivity curve and excitation energy gaps of the half-filling family. The plateau heights are systematically generated by multi-particle correlations, whereas the plateau widths and excitation energy gaps are determined by the correlation strengths. We explicitly show that the Drude-like behavior at half-filling follows from equal strength of multi-particle correlations.

Real-world quantum applications, eg. on-chip quantum networks and quantum cryptography, necessitate large scale integrated single-photon sources with nanoscale footprint for modern information technology. While on-demand and high fidelity implantation of atomic scale single-photon sources in conventional 3D materials suffer from uncertainties due to the crystals dimensionality, layered 2D materials can host point-like centers with inherent confinement to a sub-nm plane. However, previous attempts to truly deterministically control spatial position and spectral homogeneity while maintaining the 2D character have not been realized. Here, we demonstrate the on-demand creation and precise positioning of single-photon sources in atomically thin MoS2 with very narrow ensemble broadening and near-unity fabrication yield. Focused ion beam irradiation creates 100s to 1000s of mono-typical atomistic defects with anti-bunched emission lines with sub-10 nm lateral and 0.7 nm axial positioning accuracy. Our results firmly establish 2D materials as a scalable platform for single-photon emitters with unprecedented control of position as well as photophysical properties owing to the all-interfacial nature.

Partial symmetries are described by generalized group structures known as symmetric inverse semigroups. We use the algebras arising from these structures to realize supersymmetry in (0+1) dimensions and to build many-body quantum systems on a chain. This construction consists in associating appropriate supercharges to chain sites, in analogy to what is done in spin chains. For simple enough choices of supercharges, we show that the resulting states have a finite non-zero Witten index, which is invariant under perturbations, therefore defining supersymmetric phases of matter protected by the index. The Hamiltonians we obtain are integrable and display a spectrum containing both product and entangled states. By introducing disorder and studying the out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOC), we find that these systems are in the many-body localized phase and do not thermalize. Finally, we reformulate a theorem relating the growth of the second Renyi entropy to the OTOC on a thermal state in terms of partial symmetries.

Higgs mechanism to massive higher-spin gauge fields is an outstanding open problem. We investigate this issue in the context of Kaluza-Klein compactification. Starting from a free massless higher-spin field in $(d+2)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space and compactifying over a finite angular wedge, we obtain an infinite tower of heavy, light and massless higher-spin fields in $(d+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. All massive higher-spin fields are described gauge invariantly in terms of Stüeckelberg fields. The spectrum depends on the boundary conditions imposed at both ends of the wedges. We obseved that higher-derivative boundary condition is inevitable for spin greater than three. For some higher-derivative boundary conditions, equivalently, spectrum-dependent boundary conditions, we get a non-unitary representation of partially-massless higher-spin fields of varying depth. We present intuitive picture which higher-derivative boundary conditions yield non-unitary system in terms of boundary action. We argue that isotropic Lifshitz interfaces in $O(N)$ Heisenberg magnet or $O(N)$ Gross-Neveu model provides the holographic dual conformal field theory and propose experimental test of (inverse) Higgs mechanism for massive and partially massless higher-spin fields.

We present a new approach to describe hydrodynamics carrying non-Abelian macroscopic degrees of freedom. Based on the Kaluza-Klein compactification of a higher-dimensional neutral dissipative fluid on a group manifold, we obtain a d=4 colored dissipative fluid coupled to Yang-Mills gauge field. We calculate the transport coefficients of the new fluid, which show the non-Abelian character of the gauge group. In particular, we obtain group-valued terms in the gradient expansions and response quantities such as the conductivity matrix and the chemical potentials. While using SU(2) for simplicity, this approach is applicable to any gauge group. Resulting a robust description of non-Abelian hydrodynamics, we discuss some links between this system and quark-gluon plasma and fluid/gravity duality.

We propose a nonperturbative approach to nonabelian two-form gauge theory. We formulate the theory on a lattice in terms of plaquette as fundamental dynamical variable, and assign U(N) Chan-Paton colors at each boundary link. We show that, on hypercubic lattices, such colored plaquette variables constitute Yang-Baxter maps, where holonomy is characterized by certain dynamical deformation of quantum Yang-Baxter equations. Consistent dimensional reduction to Wilson's lattice gauge theory singles out unique compactness condition. We study a class of theories where the compactness condition is solved by Lax pair ansatz. We find that, in naive classical continuum limit, these theories recover Lorentz invariance but have degrees of freedom that scales as N^2 at large N. This implies that nontrivial quantum continuum limit must be sought for. We demonstrate that, after dimensional reduction, these theories are reduced to Wilson's lattice gauge theory. We also show that Wilson surfaces are well-defined physical observables without ordering ambiguity. Utilizing lattice strong coupling expansion, we compute partition function and correlation functions of the Wilson surfaces. We discover that, at large $N$ limit, the character expansion coefficients exhibit large-order behavior growing faster than exponential, in striking contrast to Wilson's lattice gauge theory. This hints a hidden, weakly coupled theory dual to the proposed tensor gauge theory. We finally discuss relevance of our study to topological quantum order in strongly correlated systems.

Using localization, matrix model and saddle-point techniques, we determine exact behavior of circular Wilson loop in N=2 superconformal (quiver) gauge theories. Focusing at planar and large `t Hooft couling limits, we compare its asymptotic behavior with well-known exponential growth of Wilson loop in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. For theory with gauge group SU(N) coupled to 2N fundamental hypermultiplets, we find that Wilson loop exhibits non-exponential growth -- at most, it can grow a power of `t Hooft coupling. For theory with gauge group SU(N) x SU(N) and bifundamental hypermultiplets, there are two Wilson loops associated with two gauge groups. We find Wilson loop in untwisted sector grows exponentially large as in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We then find Wilson loop in twisted sector exhibits non-analytic behavior with respect to difference of two `t Hooft coupling constants. By letting one gauge coupling constant hierarchically larger/smaller than the other, we show that Wilson loops in the second type theory interpolate to Wilson loop in the first type theory. We infer implications of these findings from holographic dual description in terms of minimal surface of dual string worldsheet. We suggest intuitive interpretation that in both type theories holographic dual background must involve string scale geometry even at planar and large `t Hooft coupling limit and that new results found in the gauge theory side are attributable to worldsheet instantons and infinite resummation therein. Our interpretation also indicate that holographic dual of these gauge theories is provided by certain non-critical string theories.

We propose that string theory in the background of dyon black holes in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime is holographic dual to conformally invariant composite Dirac fermion metal. By utilizing S-duality map, we show that thermodynamic and transport properties of the black hole match with those of composite fermion metal, exhibiting Fermi liquid-like. Built upon Dirac-Schwinger-Zwanziger quantization condition, we argue that turning on magnetic charges to electric black hole along the orbit of Gamma(2) subgroup of SL(2,Z) is equivalent to attaching even unit of statistical flux quanta to constituent fermions. Being at metallic point, the statistical magnetic flux is interlocked to the background magnetic field. We find supporting evidences for proposed holographic duality from study of internal energy of black hole and probe bulk fermion motion in black hole background. They show good agreement with ground-state energy of composite fermion metal in Thomas-Fermi approximation and cyclotron motion of a constituent or composite fermion excitation near Fermi-point.

I make a novel contact between string theory and degenerate fermion dynamics in thin semiconductors. Utilizing AdS/CFT correspondence in string theory and tunability of coupling parameters in condensed matter systems, I focus on the possibilities testing string theory from tabletop experiments. I first discuss the observation that stability of Fermi surface is classifiable according to K-theory. I then elaborate two concrete realization of Fermi surfaces of zero and two dimensions. Both are realized by complex of D3-branes and D7-branes of relative codimension 6 and 4, respectively. The setup with Fermi point models gauge dynamics of multiply stacked graphenes at half-filling. I show that string theory predicts dynamical generation of mass gap and metal-insulator quantum phase transition at zero temperature. I emphasize that conformally invariant gauge theory dynamics of the setup plays a crucial role, leading to novel conformal phase transition. The setup with Fermi surface is in collaboration with Dongsu Bak and is based on charged black hole and models relativistic Fermi liquid. We find positive evidence for this identification from both equilibrium thermodynamics at or near zero temperature and out-of-equilibrium linear response and transport properties. I argue that fluctuation of black hole horizon provides holographic realization consistent with Fermi liquid for thermodynamics and interesting departures therefrom in transport properties.
