R$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ compounds show a ferromagnetic metal-insulator spin glass transition tuned by the radius of the rare earth ion R$^{3+}$. We have studied Gd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ located on the verge of the transition, by neutron diffraction on a $^{160}$Gd isotopic sample, $μ$SR and X ray diffraction using the synchrotron radiation. All measurements were done both at ambient and under applied pressure. At ambient pressure, a ferromagnetic state is observed below the Curie temperature (T$_{\rm C}$ = 70 K). The ordered magnetic moments at 1.7 K are parallel and equal to 5.7(5) $μ_{\rm B}$ and 0.8(2) $μ_{\rm B}$ for Gd and Mo, respectively. The relaxation rate measured by $μ$SR evidences strong spin fluctuations below T$_{\rm C}$ and down to the lowest temperature (6.6 K). A spin reorientation occurs in the range 20 K$<$T$<$T$_{\rm C}$. The ferromagnetic state is strongly unstable under pressure. T$_{\rm C}$ sharply decreases (down to 38 K at 1.3 GPa) and Bragg peaks start to coexist with mesoscopic ferromagnetic correlations. The ordered moments decrease under pressure. At 2.7 GPa long range magnetic order completely breaks down. In this spin glass state, Gd-Gd spin correlations remain ferromagnetic with a correlation length limited to the fourth neighbor, and Gd-Mo spin correlations turn to antiferromagnetic. The unique combination of three microscopic probes under pressure provides a detailed description of the magnetic transition, crucial for further theories.

Symmetry analysis of the diffraction data indicates that this compound has the ground state predicted theoretically for a Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet with dipolar interactions. The difference in magnetic structures of Gd2Sn2O7 and of nominally analogous Gd2Ti2O7 is found to be determined by a specific type of third-neighbor superexchange interaction on the pyrochlore lattice between spins across empty hexagons.

Abstract:
Single-ion anisotropy is of importance for the magnetic ordering of the frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7. The anisotropy parameters for the Gd2Sn2O7 were measured using the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. The anisotropy was found to be of the easy plane type, with the main constant D=140mK. We have studied the spin liquid Tb$\_2$Sn$\_2$O$\_7$ by neutron diffraction and specific heat measurements. Below about 2 K, the magnetic correlations change from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic. Magnetic order settles in two steps, with a smeared transition at 1.3(1) K then an abrupt transition at 0.87(2) K. A new magnetic structure is observed, not predicted by current models, with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic character. It suggests that the spin liquid degeneracy is lifted by dipolar interactions combined with a finite anisotropy along $<111>$ axes. In the ground state, the Tb$^{3+}$ ordered moment is reduced with respect to the free ion moment (9 $μ\_{\rm B}$). The moment value of 3.3(3) $μ\_{\rm B}$ deduced from the specific heat is much smaller than derived from neutron diffraction of 5.9(1) $μ\_{\rm B}$. This difference is interpreted by the persistence of slow collective magnetic fluctuations down to the lowest temperatures.

Additional information was obtained from susceptibility, magnetisation and 172-Yb perturbed angular correlation measurements. The microscopic measurements evidence lattice disorder which is important in Yb2Mo2O7 and modest in Gd2Mo2O7. Magnetic irreversibilities occur at 17K in Yb2Mo2O7 and at 75K in Gd2Mo2O7 and below these temperatures the rare earths carry magnetic moments which are induced through couplings with the Mo sublattice. In Gd2Mo2O7, we observe the steady state Gd hyperfine populations at 0.027K are out of thermal equilibrium, indicating that Gd and Mo spin fluctuations persist at very low temperatures. Frustration is thus operative in this essentially isotropic pyrochlore where the dominant Mo intra-sublattice interaction is ferromagnetic.

The very low temperature properties of two pyrochlore compounds, Yb2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7, were investigated using an ensemble of microscopic and bulk techniques. In both compounds, a first order transition is evidenced, as well as spin dynamics persisting down to the 20mK range. The transition however has a quite different character in the two materials: whereas that in Gd2Sn2O7$ (at 1K) is a magnetic transition towards long range order, that in Yb2Ti2O7 (at 0.24K) is reminiscent of the liquid-gas transition, in the sense that it involves a 4 orders of magnitude drop of the spin fluctuation frequency; furthermore, no long range order is observed. These unusual features we attribute to frustration of the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the pyrochlore lattice.

We report on very low temperature (27 mK) Mossbauer absorption spectra on Gd 155 in the Heisenberg frustrated antiferromagnets Gd2 Sn2 O7 (GdSn) and Gd2 Ti2 O7. We show that electronic fluctuations of correlated Gd3+ moments are present near T=0 in GdSn by observing that the hyperfine levels are out of equilibrium. Using a model spin 1/2 system, submitted to a magnetic (hyperfine) field reversing randomly in time, we find an analytical expression for the stationary probability distribution of the level populations (or magnetization). This quantity is a simple function of the ratio of the nuclear relaxation time to the average electronic flip time. These two time scales are found to be of the same magnitude in GdSn, and we discuss a relevant mechanism for nuclear relaxation and the influence of electronic fluctuations on the nuclear specific heat.
