Berry phase interference arguments that underlie the theory of deconfined quantum criticality (DQC) for spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnets have also been invoked to allow for continuous transitions in spin-1 magnets including a Néel to (columnar) valence bond solid (cVBS) transition. We provide a microscopic model realization of this transition on the square lattice consisting of Heisenberg exchange ($J_H$) and biquadratic exchange ($J_B$) that favor a Néel phase, and a designed $Q$-term ($Q_B$) interaction which favors a cVBS through large-scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. For $J_H=0$, this model is equivalent to the $SU(3)$ $JQ$ model with a Néel-cVBS transition that has been argued to be DQC through QMC. Upon turning on $J_H$ which brings down the symmetry to $SU(2)$, we find multiple signatures -- a single critical point, high quality collapse of correlation ratios and order parameters, "$U(1)$-symmetric" cVBS histograms and lack of double-peak in order parameter histograms for largest sizes studied near the critical point -- that are highly suggestive of a continuous transition scenario. However, Binder analysis finds negative dips that grow sub-extensively that we interpret as these transitions rather being pseudocritical. This along with recent results on spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ models suggests that deconfined pseudocriticality is the more generic scenario.

When two surfaces are brought into contact and slide against each other, junctions are formed at the interface. The dynamics of formation, rupture and evolution of these junctions governs the tribological response of the macro-contact. Getting insight on the real behavior of these junctions is a challenging task. Theory states that contacts and asperities are continuously altered in two bodies due to applied pressure, which increases the number of active contacts. To addresses such altering interface conditions, wave propagation through tribological interface by means of the development of a numerical model is proposed. The proposed method is used to study and relate crucial parameters like stiffness, contact width, number of asperities that form a basis for an interface.

We study the ground state (GS) many-body quantum entanglement of two different transverse field models on a quasi-2D square lattice relevant to a Hydrogen-bonded crystal, i.e, squaric acid. We measure the genuine multipartite qubit-entanglement ($C_{\text{GME}}(ψ)$) of the ground state of very generic models with all the possible cases of exchange couplings considered under defect free and one lattice site defect conditions. Our results show that creation, decay of multipartite entanglement occur for different combinations of coupling strength. When frustration is maximum the system exhibits a peak in concurrence after a gradual increase from disentangled state at zero field followed by an asymptotic decay at large fields. In contrast, for a marginally frustrated (degenerate) case though the concurrence shows a peak, the entanglement is non-zero and large at zero fields. Our results discuss the sensitivity of the qubit-entanglement with underlying GS of varying degree of degeneracy. We conclude that despite of their similarities in ground state properties, yet we see a difference in the degree of entanglement between the two models. We conjecture this result could be due to the difference in the amount of degeneracy and the quantum ground states of both Hamiltonians that could dictate the results even in the thermodynamic limit.

We study analytically the finite-temperature phase diagram of proton ordering of a quasi-two dimensional hydrogen-bonded system, namely the squaric acid crystal($\text{H}_2\text{C}_4\text{O}_4$). We take into account the four-spin interaction model at the zeroth order. Using an improvised loop algorithm within the Stochastic series expansion quantum monte carlo method, we find two distinct phases as we increase the temperature and magnetic-field. One of the phase is the $Π_f$, the phase with long range ferroelectric order and the other being an intermediate state with strong local correlations, i.e, a quantum liquid-like state $Π_{ql}$. The transition to $Π_{f}$ shows a very small anomalous peak in the specific heat with strong dependence of critical temperature on the strength of dipole-dipole interaction. The presence of the small peak is attributed to the absence of macroscopic degeneracy in the presence of dipole-dipole interaction and re-entrance of such degeneracy to some extent at small temperature. Though the degenerate ground state manifold is identical for a four-spin interaction or appropriate two-spin interaction model at zeroth order, we find that for the former case, the required strength of dipole-dipole interaction is quite larger to induce a ferroelectric phase. The work also presents an intricate connection of quantum fluctuation and thermal fluctuation in the presence of competing interaction with entropic effects.

We study an organic Hydrogen bonded material $\rm{H_2SQ}$ analytically and map out the phase diagram as well as low energy excitations in the relevant parameter space. At zeroth order the dynamics is governed by plaquette interaction (product of $σ_z$ over a plaquette) which defines a $Z_2$ gauge theory and a deconfinement phase satisfying "ice rules". The system is studied under additional interactions such as an external Zeeman field (with strength $K$) in $x$-direction, a inter-molecular interaction (with strength $J_1$) and a dipole-dipole interaction with strength $J_2$ such that $K>J_1>J_2$. The effect of dipole-dipole interaction removes the local $Z_2$ symmetry and gives rise to four global degenerate states with Ferroeletric order. Using meanfield analysis we chart out the phase diagram for classical version of the model and find $K_c$ which defines the transition from disordered phase to ordered phase in $J_1, K$ plane for various values of $J_2$. We find that presence of $J_1$ and $J_2$ tends to stabilize the deconfined phases. Over the classical ground states we perform spin-wave analysis and surprisingly find that quantum fluctuations does not remove the classical degeneracy at all at quadratic level. The spin-wave spectrum is found for the four global degenerate ground states which shows both gapped spectrum and gapless spectrum (near the vicinity of CDT transition) for $J_2=0$. However for $J_2$ finite, the spectrum is always gapped. We perform PCUT analysis to improve the results of spin-wave analysis and calculate ground state energy and one particle dispersion and gap at high symmetry point. Using this we draw the phase boundary between confined and deconfined phase in the $K-J_1$ plane. The effect of $J_2$ is also discussed in the resulting phase boundary.
