Differential models for the Anderson dual to bordism theories and invertible QFT's, I
Abstract: In this paper, we construct new models for the Anderson duals $(IΩ^G)^*$ to the stable tangential $G$-bordism theories and their differential extensions. The cohomology theory $(IΩ^G)^*$ is conjectured by Freed and Hopkins [FH21] to classify deformation classes of possibly non-topological invertible quantum field theories (QFT's). Our model is made by abstractizing certain properties of invertible… ▽ More

Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem from axial anomaly
Abstract: We give a very simple derivation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) index theorem and its small generalization by using the path integral of massless Dirac fermions. It is based on the Fujikawa's argument for the relation between the axial anomaly and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, and only a minor modification of that argument is sufficient to show the APS index theorem. The key ingredient is th… ▽ More

Witten effect, anomaly inflow, and charge teleportation
Abstract: We study a phenomenon that electric charges are "teleported" between two spatially separated objects without exchanging charged particles at all. For example, this phenomenon happens between a magnetic monopole and an axion string in four dimensions, two vortices in three dimensions, and two M5-branes in M-theory in which M2-charges are teleported. This is realized by anomaly inflow into these obj… ▽ More

General anomaly matching by Goldstone bosons
Abstract: We describe how Goldstone bosons of spontaneous symmetry breaking $G \to H$ can reproduce anomalies of UV theories under the symmetry group $G$ at the nonperturbative level. This is done by giving a general definition of Wess-Zumino-Witten terms in terms of the invertible field theories in $d+1$ dimensions which describe the anomalies of $d$-dimensional UV theories. The hidden local symmetry… ▽ More

Anomaly inflow and $p$-form gauge theories
Abstract: Chiral and non-chiral $p$-form gauge fields have gravitational anomalies and anomalies of Green-Schwarz type. This means that they are most naturally realized as the boundary modes of bulk topological phases in one higher dimensions. We give a systematic description of the total bulk-boundary system which is analogous to the realization of a chiral fermion on the boundary of a massive fermion. The… ▽ More

Anomaly Inflow and the $η$-Invariant
Abstract: Perturbative fermion anomalies in spacetime dimension $d$ have a well-known relation to Chern-Simons functions in dimension $D=d+1$. This relationship is manifested in a beautiful way in "anomaly inflow" from the bulk of a system to its boundary. Along with perturbative anomalies, fermions also have global or nonperturbative anomalies, which can be incorporated by using the $η$-invariant of Atiyah… ▽ More

Anomaly of the Electromagnetic Duality of Maxwell Theory
Abstract: We consider the ($3{+}1$)-dimensional Maxwell theory in the situation where going around nontrivial paths in the spacetime involves the action of the duality transformation exchanging the electric field and the magnetic field, as well as its $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ generalizations. We find that the anomaly of this system in a particular formulation is 56 times that of a Weyl fermion. This resu… ▽ More

On the cobordism classification of symmetry protected topological phases
Abstract: In the framework of Atiyah's axioms of topological quantum field theory with unitarity, we give a direct proof of the fact that symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases without Hall effects are classified by cobordism invariants. We first show that the partition functions of those theories are cobordism invariants after a tuning of the Euler term. Conversely, for a given cobordism invariant, we… ▽ More

8d gauge anomalies and the topological Green-Schwarz mechanism
Abstract: String theory provides us with 8d supersymmetric gauge theory with gauge algebras $\mathfrak{su}(N)$, $\mathfrak{so}(2N)$, $\mathfrak{sp}(N)$, $\mathfrak{e}_{6}$, $\mathfrak{e}_{7}$ and $\mathfrak{e}_{8}$, but no construction for $\mathfrak{so}(2N{+}1)$, $\mathfrak{f}_4$ and $\mathfrak{g}_2$ is known. More on time-reversal anomaly of 2+1d topological phases
Abstract: We prove an explicit formula conjectured recently by Wang and Levin for the anomaly of time-reversal symmetry in 2+1 dimensional fermionic topological quantum field theories. The crucial step is to determine the crosscap state in terms of the modular S matrix and $\mathsf{T}^2$ eigenvalues, generalizing the recent analysis by Barkeshli et al. in the bosonic case.

On time-reversal anomaly of 2+1d topological phases
Abstract: We describe a method to find the anomaly of the time-reversal symmetry of 2+1d topological quantum field theories, by computing the fractional anomalous momentum on the cross-cap background. This allows us, for example, to identify the parameter $ν$ mod 16 of the bulk 3+1d topological superconductor with $\mathsf{T}^2=(-1)^F$ on whose boundary a given 2+1d time-reversal-invariant topological phase… ▽ More

Dai-Freed theorem and topological phases of matter
Abstract: We describe a physics derivation of theorems due to Dai and Freed about the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer eta-invariant which is important for anomalies and topological phases of matter. This is done by studying a massive fermion. The key role is played by the wave function of the ground state in the Hilbert space of the fermion in the large mass limit. The ground state takes values in the determinant line… ▽ More

Gauge interactions and topological phases of matter
Abstract: We initiate the study of the effects of strongly-coupled gauge interactions on the properties of the topological phases of matter. In particular, we discuss fermionic systems with three spatial dimensions, protected by time reversal symmetry. We first derive a sufficient condition for the introduction of a dynamical Yang-Mills field to preserve the topological phase of matter, and then show how th… ▽ More
