The thought-provoking analogy between AI and electricity, made by computer scientist and entrepreneur Andrew Ng, summarizes the deep transformation that recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have triggered in the world. This chapter presents an overview of the ever-evolving landscape of AI, written in Portuguese. With no intent to exhaust the subject, we explore the AI applications that are redefining sectors of the economy, impacting society and humanity. We analyze the risks that may come along with rapid technological progress and future trends in AI, an area that is on the path to becoming a general-purpose technology, just like electricity, which revolutionized society in the 19th and 20th centuries.
A provocativa comparação entre IA e eletricidade, feita pelo cientista da computação e empreendedor Andrew Ng, resume a profunda transformação que os recentes avanços em Inteligência Artificial (IA) têm desencadeado no mundo. Este capítulo apresenta uma visão geral pela paisagem em constante evolução da IA. Sem pretensões de exaurir o assunto, exploramos as aplicações que estão redefinindo setores da economia, impactando a sociedade e a humanidade. In the context of sentiment analysis, there has been growing interest in performing a finer granularity analysis focusing on the specific aspects of the entities being evaluated. This is the goal of Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (ABSA) which basically involves two tasks: aspect extraction and polarity detection. The first task is responsible for discovering the aspects mentioned in the review text and the second task assigns a sentiment orientation (positive, negative, or neutral) to that aspect. Currently, the state-of-the-art in ABSA consists of the application of deep learning methods such as recurrent, convolutional and attention neural networks. The limitation of these techniques is that they require a lot of training data and are computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose a simple approach called SUAEx for aspect extraction. SUAEx is unsupervised and relies solely on the similarity of word embeddings. Experimental results on datasets from three different domains have shown that SUAEx achieves results that can outperform the state-of-the-art attention-based approach at a fraction of the time.

This paper describes the system submitted by our team (BabelEnconding) to SemEval-2020 Task 3: Predicting the Graded Effect of Context in Word Similarity. We propose an approach that relies on translation and multilingual language models in order to compute the contextual similarity between pairs of words. Our hypothesis is that evidence from additional languages can leverage the correlation with the human generated scores. BabelEnconding was applied to both subtasks and ranked among the top-3 in six out of eight task/language combinations and was the highest scoring system three times.

BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) and ALBERT (A Lite BERT) are methods for pre-training language models which can later be fine-tuned for a variety of Natural Language Understanding tasks. These methods have been applied to a number of such tasks (mostly in English), achieving results that outperform the state-of-the-art. In this paper, our contribution is twofold. First, we make available our trained BERT and Albert model for Portuguese. Second, we compare our monolingual and the standard multilingual models using experiments in semantic textual similarity, recognizing textual entailment, textual category classification, sentiment analysis, offensive comment detection, and fake news detection, to assess the effectiveness of the generated language representations. The results suggest that both monolingual and multilingual models are able to achieve state-of-the-art and the advantage of training a single language model, if any, is small.

A Large Parallel Corpus of Full-Text Scientific Articles

The Scielo database is an important source of scientific information in Latin America, containing articles from several research domains. A striking characteristic of Scielo is that many of its full-text contents are presented in more than one language, thus being a potential source of parallel corpora. In this article, we present the development of a parallel corpus from Scielo in three languages: English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Sentences were automatically aligned using the Hunalign algorithm for all language pairs, and for a subset of trilingual articles also. We demonstrate the capabilities of our corpus by training a Statistical Machine Translation system (Moses) for each language pair, which outperformed related works on scientific articles. Sentence alignment was also manually evaluated, presenting an average of 98.8% correctly aligned sentences across all languages. Our parallel corpus is freely available in the TMX format, with complementary information regarding article metadata.

We introduce VEXUS, an interactive visualization framework for exploring user data to fulfill tasks such as finding a set of experts, forming discussion groups and analyzing collective behaviors. User data is characterized by a combination of demographics like age and occupation, and actions such as rating a movie, writing a paper, following a medical treatment or buying groceries. The ubiquity of user data requires tools that help explorers, be they specialists or novice users, acquire new insights. VEXUS lets explorers interact with user data via visual primitives and builds an exploration profile to recommend the next exploration steps. VEXUS combines state-of-the-art visualization techniques with appropriate indexing of user data to provide fast and relevant exploration.

Recent research has taken advantage of Wikipedia's multilingualism as a resource for cross-language information retrieval and machine translation, as well as proposed techniques for enriching its cross-language structure. The availability of documents in multiple languages also opens up new opportunities for querying structured Wikipedia content, and in particular, to enable answers that straddle different languages. As a step towards supporting such queries, in this paper, we propose a method for identifying mappings between attributes from infoboxes that come from pages in different languages. Our approach finds mappings in a completely automated fashion. Because it does not require training data, it is scalable: not only can it be used to find mappings between many language pairs, but it is also effective for languages that are under-represented and lack sufficient training samples. Another important benefit of our approach is that it does not depend on syntactic similarity between attribute names, and thus, it can be applied to language pairs that have distinct morphologies. We have performed an extensive experimental evaluation using a corpus consisting of pages in Portuguese, Vietnamese, and English. The results show that not only does our approach obtain high precision and recall, but it also outperforms state-of-the-art techniques. We also present a case study which demonstrates that the multilingual mappings we derive lead to substantial improvements in answer quality and coverage for structured queries over Wikipedia content.

Ranking groups of researchers is important in several contexts and can serve many purposes such as the fair distribution of grants based on the scientist's publication output, concession of research projects, classification of journal editorial boards and many other applications in a social context. In this paper, we propose a method for measuring the performance of groups of researchers. The proposed method is called alpha-index and it is based on two parameters: (i) the homogeneity of the h-indexes of the researchers in the group; and (ii) the h-group, which is an extension of the h-index for groups. Our method integrates the concepts of homogeneity and absolute value of the h-index into a single measure which is appropriate for the evaluation of groups. We report on experiments that assess computer science conferences based on the h-indexes of their program committee members. Our results are similar to a manual classification scheme adopted by a research agency.

The main goal of Fiddle, a distributed debugging engine, is to provide a flexible platform for developing debugging tools. Fiddle provides a layered set of interfaces with a minimal set of debugging functionalities, for the inspection and control of distributed and multi-threaded applications.
This paper illustrates how Fiddle is used to support integrated testing and debugging. The approach described is based on a tool, called Deipa, that interprets sequences of commands read from an input file, generated by an independent testing tool. Deipa acts as a Fiddle client, in order to enforce specific execution paths in a distributed PVM program. Other Fiddle clients may be used along with Deipa for the fine debugging at process level. Fiddle and Deipa functionalities and architectures are described, and a working example shows a step-by-step application of these tools.
