As global concerns about climate change intensify, the transition towards zero-emission freight is becoming increasingly vital. Drayage is an important segment of the freight system, typically involving the transport of goods from seaports or intermodal terminals to nearby warehouses. This sector significantly contributes to not only greenhouse gas emissions, but also pollution in densely populated areas. This study presents a holistic optimization model designed for an efficient transition to zero-emission drayage, offering cost-effective strategies for the coordinated investment planning for power systems, charging infrastructure, and electric drayage trucks. The model is validated in the Greater Los Angeles area, where regulatory goals are among the most ambitious. Furthermore, the model's design allows for easy adaptation to other regions. By focusing on drayage trucks, this study also paves the way for future research into other freight categories, establishing a foundation for a more extensive exploration in this field.

In the context of visual perception, the optical signal from a scene is transferred into the electronic domain by detectors in the form of image data, which are then processed for the extraction of visual information. In noisy and weak-signal environments such as thermal imaging for night vision applications, however, the performance of neural computing tasks faces a significant bottleneck due to the inherent degradation of data quality upon noisy detection. Here, we propose a concept of optical signal processing before detection to address this issue. We demonstrate that spatially redistributing optical signals through a properly designed linear transformer can enhance the detection noise resilience of visual perception tasks, as benchmarked with the MNIST classification. Our idea is supported by a quantitative analysis detailing the relationship between signal concentration and noise robustness, as well as its practical implementation in an incoherent imaging system. This compute-first detection scheme can pave the way for advancing infrared machine vision technologies widely used for industrial and defense applications.

How to effectively interact audio with vision has garnered considerable interest within the multi-modality research field. Recently, a novel audio-visual segmentation (AVS) task has been proposed, aiming to segment the sounding objects in video frames under the guidance of audio cues. However, most existing AVS methods are hindered by a modality imbalance where the visual features tend to dominate those of the audio modality, due to a unidirectional and insufficient integration of audio cues. This imbalance skews the feature representation towards the visual aspect, impeding the learning of joint audio-visual representations and potentially causing segmentation inaccuracies. To address this issue, we propose AVSAC. Our approach features a Bidirectional Audio-Visual Decoder (BAVD) with integrated bidirectional bridges, enhancing audio cues and fostering continuous interplay between audio and visual modalities. This bidirectional interaction narrows the modality imbalance, facilitating more effective learning of integrated audio-visual representations. Additionally, we present a strategy for audio-visual frame-wise synchrony as fine-grained guidance of BAVD. This strategy enhances the share of auditory components in visual features, contributing to a more balanced audio-visual representation learning. Extensive experiments show that our method attains new benchmarks in AVS performance.

In addition, the medium- and heavy-duty truck fleets are expected to see rapid electrification over the next two decades. Considering these two pathways in tandem is critical for ensuring cost optimality and reliable power system operation. In particular, we examine the potential cost savings of electrical generation infrastructure by enabling flexible charging and bidirectional charging for these trucks. We also examine costs adjacent to enabling these services, such as charger upgrades and battery degradation. We deploy a large mixed-integer decarbonization planning model to quantify the costs associated with the electric generation decarbonization pathway. Example scenarios governing truck driving and charging behaviors are implemented to reveal the sensitivity of temporal driving patterns. Our experiments show that cost savings on the order of multiple billions of dollars are possible by enabling flexible and bidirectional charging in medium- and heavy-duty trucks in California.

As the decarbonization of power systems accelerates, there has been increasing interest in capacity expansion models for their role in guiding this transition. Representative period selection is an important component of capacity expansion modeling, enabling computational tractability of optimization while ensuring fidelity between the representative periods and the full year. However, little attention has been devoted to selecting representative periods longer than a single day. This prevents the capacity expansion model from directly simulating interday energy sharing, which is of key importance as energy generation becomes more variable and storage more important. To this end, we propose a novel method for selecting representative periods of any length. The method is validated using a capacity expansion model and production cost model based on California's decarbonization goals. We demonstrate that the representative period length has a substantial impact in the results of the capacity expansion investment plan.

Nowadays, it is common to release audio content to the public. However, with the rise of voice cloning technology, attackers have the potential to easily impersonate a specific person by utilizing his publicly released audio without any permission. Therefore, it becomes significant to detect any potential misuse of the released audio content and protect its timbre from being impersonated. To this end, we introduce a novel concept, "Timbre Watermarking", which embeds watermark information into the target individual's speech, eventually defeating the voice cloning attacks. To ensure the watermark is robust to the voice cloning model's learning process, we design an end-to-end voice cloning-resistant detection framework. The core idea of our solution is to embed and extract the watermark in the frequency domain in a temporally invariant manner. To acquire generalization across different voice cloning attacks, we modulate their shared process and integrate it into our framework as a distortion layer. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed timbre watermarking can defend against different voice cloning attacks, exhibit strong resistance against various adaptive attacks (e.g., reconstruction-based removal attacks, watermark overwriting attacks), and achieve practicality in real-world services such as PaddleSpeech, Voice-Cloning-App, and so-vits-svc. In addition, ablation studies are also conducted to verify the effectiveness of our design. Some audio samples are available at https://timbrewatermarking.github.io/samples.

The recent advances in graph neural networks (GNN) enable it to enhance the B&B algorithm in modern MIP solvers by learning to dive and branch. Existing GNN models that tackle MIP problems are mostly constructed from mathematical formulation, which is computationally expensive when dealing with large-scale UC problems. In this paper, we propose a physics-informed hierarchical graph convolutional network (PI-GCN) for neural diving that leverages the underlying features of various components of power systems to find high-quality variable assignments. Furthermore, we adopt the MIP model-based graph convolutional network (MB-GCN) for neural branching to select the optimal variables for branching at each node of the B&B tree. Finally, we integrate neural diving and neural branching into a modern MIP solver to establish a novel neural MIP solver designed for large-scale UC problems. Numeral studies show that PI-GCN has better performance and scalability than the baseline MB-GCN on neural diving. Moreover, the neural MIP solver yields the lowest operational cost and outperforms a modern MIP solver for all testing days after combining it with our proposed neural diving model and the baseline neural branching model.

The global deployment of the phasor measurement units (PMUs) enables real-time monitoring of the power system, which has stimulated considerable research into machine learning-based models for event detection and classification. However, recent studies reveal that machine learning-based methods are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which can fool the event classifiers by adding small perturbations to the raw PMU data. To mitigate the threats posed by adversarial attacks, research on defense strategies is urgently needed. This paper proposes an effective adversarial purification method based on the diffusion model to counter adversarial attacks on the machine learning-based power system event classifier. The proposed method includes two steps: injecting noise into the PMU data; and utilizing a pre-trained neural network to eliminate the added noise while simultaneously removing perturbations introduced by the adversarial attacks. The proposed adversarial purification method significantly increases the accuracy of the event classifier under adversarial attacks while satisfying the requirements of real-time operations. In addition, the theoretical analysis reveals that the proposed diffusion model-based adversarial purification method decreases the distance between the original and compromised PMU data, which reduces the impacts of adversarial attacks. The empirical results on a large-scale real-world PMU dataset validate the effectiveness and computational efficiency of the proposed adversarial purification method.

While existing methods often focus on one aspect of the image without considering how to pay attention to this balance, which will cause problems of color distortion and overexposure etc. This seriously affects both human visual perception and the performance of high-level visual models. In this work, a novel synergistic structure is proposed which can balance brightness, color, and illumination more effectively. Specifically, the proposed method, so-called Joint Correcting and Refinement Network (JCRNet), which mainly consists of three stages to balance brightness, color, and illumination of enhancement. Stage 1: we utilize a basic encoder-decoder and local supervision mechanism to extract local information and more comprehensive details for enhancement. Stage 2: cross-stage feature transmission and spatial feature transformation further facilitate color correction and feature refinement. Stage 3: we employ a dynamic illumination adjustment approach to embed residuals between predicted and ground truth images into the model, adaptively adjusting illumination balance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits comprehensive performance advantages over 21 state-of-the-art methods on 9 benchmark datasets. Furthermore, a more persuasive experiment has been conducted to validate our approach the effectiveness in downstream visual tasks (e.g., saliency detection). Compared to several enhancement models, the proposed method effectively improves the segmentation results and quantitative metrics of saliency detection. With California's ambitious goal to achieve decarbonization of the electrical grid by the year 2045, significant challenges arise in power system investment planning. Existing modeling methods and software focus on computational efficiency, which is currently achieved by simplifying the associated unit commitment formulation. This may lead to unjustifiable inaccuracies in the cost and constraints of gas-fired generation operations, and may affect both the timing and the extent of investment in new resources, such as renewable energy and energy storage.
To address this issue, this paper develops a more detailed and rigorous mixed-integer model, and more importantly, a solution methodology utilizing surrogate level-based Lagrangian relaxation to overcome the combinatorial complexity that results from the enhanced level of model detail. This allows us to optimize a model with approximately 12 million binary and 100 million total variables in under 48 hours. The investment plan is compared with those produced by E3's RESOLVE software, which is currently employed by the California Energy Commission and California Public Utilities Commission. Our model produces an investment plan that differs substantially from that of the existing method and saves California over 12 billion dollars over the investment horizon.

We split the PyramidNet carefully into two parts for an IoT device and the edge server, which is to pursue low on-device computation. Also, we apply a squeeze-and-excitation block to the PyramidNet for the improvement of image recognition. In addition, we embed compression encoder and decoder at the splitting point, which reduces communication overhead by compressing the intermediate feature map. The timely transportation of goods to customers is an essential component of economic activities. However, heavy-duty diesel trucks used for goods delivery significantly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions within many large metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. To reduce GHG emissions by facilitating freight electrification, this paper proposes Joint Routing and Charging scheduling for electric trucks. The objective of the associated optimization problem is to minimize the cost of transportation, charging, and tardiness. A large number of possible combinations of road segments as well as a large number of combinations of charging decisions and charging durations leads to a combinatorial explosion in the possible decisions electric trucks can make. The resulting mixed-integer linear programming problem is thus extremely challenging because of the combinatorial complexity even in the deterministic case. Therefore, a Surrogate Level-Based Lagrangian Relaxation (SLBLR) method is employed to decompose the overall problem into significantly less complex truck subproblems. In the coordination aspect, each truck subproblem is solved independently of other subproblems based on the values of Lagrangian multipliers. In addition to serving as a means of guiding and coordinating trucks, multipliers can also serve as a basis for transparent and explanatory decision-making by trucks. Testing results demonstrate that even small instances cannot be solved using the off-the-shelf solver CPLEX after several days of solving. The SLBLR method, on the other hand, can obtain near-optimal solutions within a few minutes for small cases, and within 30 minutes for large ones. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that as battery capacity increases, the total cost decreases significantly; moreover, as the charging power increases, the number of trucks required decreases as well.

Audio watermarking is widely used for leaking source tracing. The robustness of the watermark determines the traceability of the algorithm. With the development of digital technology, audio re-recording (AR) has become an efficient and covert means to steal secrets. AR process could drastically destroy the watermark signal while preserving the original information. This puts forward a new requirement for audio watermarking at this stage, that is, to be robust to AR distortions. Unfortunately, none of the existing algorithms can effectively resist AR attacks due to the complexity of the AR process. To address this limitation, this paper proposes DeAR, a deep-learning-based audio re-recording resistant watermarking. Inspired by DNN-based image watermarking, we pioneer a deep learning framework for audio carriers, based on which the watermark signal can be effectively embedded and extracted. Meanwhile, in order to resist the AR attack, we delicately analyze the distortions that occurred in the AR process and design the corresponding distortion layer to cooperate with the proposed watermarking framework. Extensive experiments show that the proposed algorithm can resist not only common electronic channel distortions but also AR distortions. Under the premise of high-quality embedding (SNR=25.86dB), in the case of a common re-recording distance (20cm), the algorithm can effectively achieve an average bit recovery accuracy of 98.55%.

The dataset consists of almost 1000 instances of labeled event data to encourage benchmark evaluations on phasor measurement unit (PMU) data analytics. PMU data are challenging to obtain, especially those covering event periods. Nevertheless, power system problems have recently seen phenomenal advancements via data-driven machine learning solutions. Recent years have seen a considerable surge of research on developing heuristic approaches to realize analog computing using physical waves. Among these, neuromorphic computing using light waves is envisioned to feature performance metrics such as computational speed and energy efficiency exceeding those of conventional digital techniques by many orders of magnitude. Yet, neuromorphic computing based on photonics remains a challenge due to the difficulty of training and manufacturing sophisticated photonic structures to support neural networks with adequate expressive power. Here, we realize a diffractive optical neural network (ONN) based on metasurfaces that can recognize objects by directly processing light waves scattered from the objects. Metasurfaces composed of a two-dimensional array of millions of meta-units can realize precise control of optical wavefront with subwavelength resolution; thus, when used as constitutive layers of an ONN, they can provide exceptionally high expressive power. We experimentally demonstrate ONNs based on single-layered metasurfaces that modulate the phase and polarization over optical wavefront for recognizing optically coherent binary objects, including hand-written digits and English alphabetic letters. We further demonstrate, in simulation, ONNs based on metasurface doublets for human facial verification. The advantageous traits of metasurface-based ONNs, including ultra-compact form factors, zero power consumption, ultra-fast and parallel data processing capabilities, and physics-guaranteed data security, make them suitable as "edge" perception devices that can transform the future of image collection and analysis.

Package delivery via the UAVs is a promising transport mode to provide efficient and green logistic services, especially in urban areas or complicated topography. However, the energy storage limit of the UAV makes it difficult to perform long-distance delivery tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel multimodal logistics framework, in which the UAVs can call on ground vehicles to provide hitch services to save their own energy and extend their delivery distance. This multimodal logistics framework is formulated as a two-stage model to jointly consider the incentive mechanism design for ground vehicles and path planning for UAVs. In Stage I, to deal with the motivations for ground vehicles to assist UAV delivery, a dynamic pricing scheme is proposed to best balance the vehicle response time and payments to ground vehicles. It shows that a higher price should be decided if the vehicle response time is long to encourage more vehicles to offer a ride. In Stage II, the task allocation and path planning of the UAVs over traffic network is studied based on the vehicle response time obtained in Stage I. To address pathfinding with restrictions and the performance degradation of the pathfinding algorithm due to the rising number of conflicts in multi-agent pathfinding, we propose the suboptimal conflict avoidance-based path search (CABPS) algorithm, which has polynomial time complexity. Finally, we validate our results via simulations. It is shown that our approach is able to increase the success rate of UAV package delivery. Moreover, we estimate the delivery time of the UAV in a pessimistic case, it is still twice as fast as the delivery time of the ground vehicle only.

Manufacturing plays a significant role in economic development, production, exports, and job creation, which ultimately contribute to improving the quality of life. The presence of manufacturing defects is, however, inevitable leading to products being discarded, i.e. scrapped. In some cases, defective products can be repaired through rework. Scrap and rework cause a longer completion time, which can contribute to orders being shipped late. Moreover, the presence of uncertainties and combinatorial complexity significantly increases the difficulty of complex manufacturing scheduling. This paper tackles this challenge, exemplified by a case study on stochastic job-shop scheduling in low-volume, high-variety manufacturing contexts. To ensure on-time delivery, high-quality solutions are required, and near-optimal solutions must be obtained within strict time constraints to ensure smooth operations on the job-shop floor. To efficiently solve the stochastic job-shop scheduling (JSS) problem, a recently-developed Surrogate "Level-Based" Lagrangian Relaxation is used to reduce computational effort while efficiently exploiting the geometric convergence potential inherent to Polyak's stepsizing formula thereby leading to fast convergence. Numerical testing demonstrates that the new method is two orders of magnitude faster as compared to commercial solvers.

Unit commitment (UC) is a fundamental problem in the day-ahead electricity market, and it is critical to solve UC problems efficiently. Mathematical optimization techniques like dynamic programming, Lagrangian relaxation, and mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) are commonly adopted for UC problems. However, the calculation time of these methods increases at an exponential rate with the amount of generators and energy resources, which is still the main bottleneck in industry. Recent advances in artificial intelligence have demonstrated the capability of reinforcement learning (RL) to solve UC problems. Unfortunately, the existing research on solving UC problems with RL suffers from the curse of dimensionality when the size of UC problems grows. To deal with these problems, we propose an optimization method-assisted ensemble deep reinforcement learning algorithm, where UC problems are formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and solved by multi-step deep Q-learning in an ensemble framework. The proposed algorithm establishes a candidate action set by solving tailored optimization problems to ensure a relatively high performance and the satisfaction of operational constraints. Numerical studies on IEEE 118 and 300-bus systems show that our algorithm outperforms the baseline RL algorithm and MIQP. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm shows strong generalization capacity under unforeseen operational conditions.

The real-time transient stability assessment (TSA) plays a critical role in the secure operation of the power system. Although the classic numerical integration method, \textit{i.e.} time-domain simulation (TDS), has been widely used in industry practice, it is inevitably trapped in a high computational complexity due to the high latitude sophistication of the power system. In this work, a data-driven power system estimation method is proposed to quickly predict the stability of the power system before TDS reaches the end of simulating time windows, which can reduce the average simulation time of stability assessment without loss of accuracy. As the topology of the power system is in the form of graph structure, graph neural network based representation learning is naturally suitable for learning the status of the power system. Motivated by observing the distribution information of crucial active power and reactive power on the power system's bus nodes, we thus propose a distribution-aware learning~(DAL) module to explore an informative graph representation vector for describing the status of a power system. Then, TSA is re-defined as a binary classification task, and the stability of the system is determined directly from the resulting graph representation without numerical integration. Finally, we apply our method to the online TSA task. The case studies on the IEEE 39-bus system and Polish 2383-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Potential users of the dataset and testing environment could first train an sample-efficient off-line (batch) RL algorithm on the historical dataset and then evaluate the performance of the trained RL agent on the testing environments. This dataset serves as a useful testbed to conduct RL-based VVC research mimicking the real-world operational challenges faced by electric utilities. Meanwhile, it allows researchers to conduct fair performance comparisons between different algorithms.

Recent online Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) methods have achieved desirable tracking performance. However, the tracking speed of most existing methods is rather slow. Inspired from the fact that the adjacent frames are highly relevant and redundant, we divide the frames into key and non-key frames respectively and track objects in the compressed domain. For the key frames, the RGB images are restored for detection and data association. To make data association more reliable, an appearance Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which can be jointly trained with the detector is proposed. For the non-key frames, the objects are directly propagated by a tracking CNN based on the motion information provided in the compressed domain. Compared with the state-of-the-art online MOT methods, our tracker is about 6x faster while maintaining a comparable tracking performance.

The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) calls for the widespread installation of EV charging stations. To maximize the profitability of charging stations, intelligent controllers that provide both charging and electric grid services are in great need. However, it is challenging to determine the optimal charging schedule due to the uncertain arrival time and charging demands of EVs. In this paper, we propose a novel centralized allocation and decentralized execution (CADE) reinforcement learning (RL) framework to maximize the charging station's profit. In the centralized allocation process, EVs are allocated to either the waiting or charging spots. In the decentralized execution process, each charger makes its own charging/discharging decision while learning the action-value functions from a shared replay memory. This CADE framework significantly improves the scalability and sample efficiency of the RL algorithm. Numerical results show that the proposed CADE framework is both computationally efficient and scalable, and significantly outperforms the baseline model predictive control (MPC). We also provide an in-depth analysis of the learned action-value function to explain the inner working of the reinforcement learning agent.

As an effective method for intellectual property (IP) protection, model watermarking technology has been applied on a wide variety of deep neural networks (DNN), including speech classification models. However, how to design a black-box watermarking scheme for automatic speech recognition (ASR) models is still an unsolved problem, which is a significant demand for protecting remote ASR Application Programming Interface (API) deployed in cloud servers. Due to conditional independence assumption and label-detection-based evasion attack risk of ASR models, the black-box model watermarking scheme for speech classification models cannot apply to ASR models. In this paper, we propose the first black-box model watermarking framework for protecting the IP of ASR models. Specifically, we synthesize trigger audios by spreading the speech clips of model owners over the entire input audios and labeling the trigger audios with the stego texts, which hides the authorship information with linguistic steganography. Experiments on the state-of-the-art open-source ASR system DeepSpeech demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed watermarking scheme, which is robust against five kinds of attacks and has little impact on accuracy.

In massive machine-type communications (mMTC), grant-free access is a key enabler for a massive number of users to be connected to a base station with low signaling overhead and low latency. In this paper, a two-stage genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed to design a new set of user-specific, non-orthogonal, unimodular sequences for uplink grant-free access. The first-stage GA is to find a subsampling index set for a partial unitary matrix that can be approximated to an equiangular tight frame. Then in the second-stage GA, we try to find a sequence to be masked to each column of the partial unitary matrix, in order to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio of the resulting columns for multicarrier transmission. Finally, the masked columns of the matrix are proposed as new non-orthogonal sequences for uplink grant-free access. Simulation results demonstrate that the non-orthogonal sequences designed by our two-stage GA exhibit excellent performance for compressed sensing based joint activity detection and channel estimation in uplink grant-free access. Compared to algebraic design, this GA-based design can present a set of good non-orthogonal sequences of arbitrary length, which provides more flexibility for uplink grant-free access in mMTC.

Accurate estimates of network parameters are essential for modeling, monitoring, and control in power distribution systems. In this paper, we develop a physics-informed graphical learning algorithm to estimate network parameters of three-phase power distribution systems. Our proposed algorithm uses only readily available smart meter data to estimate the three-phase series resistance and reactance of the primary distribution line segments. We first develop a parametric physics-based model to replace the black-box deep neural networks in the conventional graphical neural network (GNN). Then we derive the gradient of the loss function with respect to the network parameters and use stochastic gradient descent (SGD) to estimate the physical parameters. Prior knowledge of network parameters is also considered to further improve the accuracy of estimation. Comprehensive numerical study results show that our proposed algorithm yields high accuracy and outperforms existing methods.

Online power system event identification and classification is crucial to enhancing the reliability of transmission systems. In this paper, we develop a deep neural network (DNN) based approach to identify and classify power system events by leveraging real-world measurements from hundreds of phasor measurement units (PMUs) and labels from thousands of events. Two innovative designs are embedded into the baseline model built on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to improve the event classification accuracy. First, we propose a graph signal processing based PMU sorting algorithm to improve the learning efficiency of CNNs. Second, we deploy information loading based regularization to strike the right balance between memorization and generalization for the DNN. Numerical studies results based on real-world dataset from the Eastern Interconnection of the U.S power transmission grid show that the combination of PMU based sorting and the information loading based regularization techniques help the proposed DNN approach achieve highly accurate event identification and classification results.

Variable impedance control is advantageous for physical human-robot interaction to improve safety, adaptability and many other aspects. This paper presents a gain-scheduled variable stiffness control approach under strict frequency-domain constraints. Firstly, to reduce conservativeness, we characterize and constrain the impedance rendering, actuator saturation, disturbance/noise rejection and passivity requirements into their specific frequency bands. This relaxation makes sense because of the restricted frequency properties of the interactive robots. Secondly, a gain-scheduled method is taken to regulate the controller gains with respect to the desired stiffness. Thirdly, the scheduling function is parameterized via a nonsmooth optimization method. Finally, the proposed approach is validated by simulations, experiments and comparisons with a gain-fixed passivity-based PID method.

To remove dependency on inaccurate and incomplete network models and enhance resiliency against communication or controller failure, we propose consensus multi-agent deep reinforcement learning algorithm to solve the VVC problem. The VVC problem is formulated as a networked multi-agent Markov decision process, which is solved using the maximum entropy reinforcement learning framework and a novel communication-efficient consensus strategy. The problem is typically solved by physical model-based control algorithms, which not only rely on accurate network parameters but also lack scalability. To address these limitations, this paper develops a data-driven batch-constrained reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm for the dynamic DNR problem. The proposed RL algorithm learns the network reconfiguration control policy from a finite historical operational dataset without interacting with the distribution network. The numerical study results on three distribution networks show that the proposed algorithm not only outperforms state-of-the-art RL algorithms but also improves the behavior control policy, which generated the historical operational data. Deep learning has achieved tremendous success in numerous industrial applications. As training a good model often needs massive high-quality data and computation resources, the learned models often have significant business values. However, these valuable deep models are exposed to a huge risk of infringements. For example, if the attacker has the full information of one target model including the network structure and weights, the model can be easily finetuned on new datasets. Even if the attacker can only access the output of the target model, he/she can still train another similar surrogate model by generating a large scale of input-output training pairs. How to protect the intellectual property of deep models is a very important but seriously under-researched problem. There are a few recent attempts at classification network protection only. In this paper, we propose the first model watermarking framework for protecting image processing models. To achieve this goal, we leverage the spatial invisible watermarking mechanism. Specifically, given a black-box target model, a unified and invisible watermark is hidden into its outputs, which can be regarded as a special task-agnostic barrier. In this way, when the attacker trains one surrogate model by using the input-output pairs of the target model, the hidden watermark will be learned and extracted afterward. To enable watermarks from binary bits to high-resolution images, both traditional and deep spatial invisible watermarking mechanism are considered. Experiments demonstrate the robustness of the proposed watermarking mechanism, which can resist surrogate models learned with different network structures and objective functions. Besides deep models, the proposed method is also easy to be extended to protect data and traditional image processing algorithms.

Moreover, the ability to participate in the retail electricity markets through proactive demand-side participation has recently led to development of economic model predictive control (EMPC) for building's Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. The objective of this paper is to develop a price-sensitive operational model for building's HVAC systems while considering inflexible loads and other distributed energy resources (DERs) such as photovoltaic (PV) generation and battery storage for the buildings. A Nonlinear Economic Model Predictive Controller (NL-EMPC) is presented to minimize the net cost of energy usage by building's HVAC system while satisfying the comfort-level of building's occupants. Impedance control and specifically stiffness control are widely applied for physical human-robot interaction. The series elastic actuator (SEA) provides inherent compliance, safety and further benefits. This paper aims to improve the stiffness control performance of a cable-driven SEA. Existing impedance controllers were designed within the full frequency domain, though human-robot interaction commonly falls in the low frequency range. We enhance the stiffness rendering performance under formulated constraints of passivity, actuator limitation, disturbance attenuation, noise rejection at their specific frequency ranges. Firstly, we reformulate this multiple frequency-band optimization problem into the $H_\infty$ synthesis framework. Then, the performance goals are quantitatively characterized by respective restricted frequency-domain specifications as norm bounds. Further, a structured controller is directly synthesized to satisfy all the competing performance requirements. Both simulation and experimental results showed that the produced controller enabled good interaction performance for each desired stiffness varying from 0 to 1 times of the physical spring constant. Compared with the passivity-based PID method, the proposed $H_\infty$ synthesis method achieved more accurate and robust stiffness control performance with guaranteed passivity.

Purpose: This paper presents an impedance control method with mixed $H_2/H_\infty$ synthesis and relaxed passivity for a cable-driven series elastic actuator to be applied for physical human-robot interaction.
Design/methodology/approach: To shape the system's impedance to match a desired dynamic model, the impedance control problem was reformulated into an impedance matching structure. The desired competing performance requirements as well as constraints from the physical system can be characterized with weighting functions for respective signals. Considering the frequency properties of human movements, the passivity constraint for stable human-robot interaction, which is required on the entire frequency spectrum and may bring conservative solutions, has been relaxed in such a way that it only restrains the low frequency band. Thus, impedance control became a mixed $H_2/H_\infty$ synthesis problem, and a dynamic output feedback controller can be obtained.
Findings: The proposed impedance control strategy has been tested for various desired impedance with both simulation and experiments on the cable-driven series elastic actuator platform. The actual interaction torque tracked well the desired torque within the desired norm bounds, and the control input was regulated below the motor velocity limit. The closed loop system can guarantee relaxed passivity at low frequency. Both simulation and experimental results have validated the feasibility and efficacy of the proposed method.
Originality/value: This impedance control strategy with mixed $H_2/H_\infty$ synthesis and relaxed passivity provides a novel, effective and less conservative method for physical human-robot interaction control.

Accurate phase connectivity information is essential for advanced monitoring and control applications in power distribution systems. The existing data-driven approaches for phase identification lack precise physical interpretation and theoretical performance guarantee. Their performance generally deteriorates as the complexity of the network, the number of phase connections, and the level of load balance increase. In this paper, by linearizing the three-phase power flow manifold, we develop a physical model, which links the phase connections to the smart meter measurements. The phase identification problem is first formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation problem and then reformulated as a maximum marginal likelihood estimation problem. We prove that the correct phase connection achieves the highest log likelihood values for both problems. An efficient solution method is proposed by decomposing the original problem into subproblems with a binary least-squares formulation. The numerical tests on a comprehensive set of distribution circuits show that our proposed method yields very high accuracy on both radial and meshed distribution circuits with a combination of single-phase, two-phase, and three-phase loads. The proposed algorithm is robust with respect to inaccurate feeder models and incomplete measurements. It also outperforms the existing methods on complex circuits.

Body weight support (BWS) is a fundamental technique in rehabilitation. Along with the dramatic progressing of rehabilitation science and engineering, BWS is quickly evolving with new initiatives and has attracted deep research effort in recent years. We have built up a novel gravity offloading system, in which the patient is allowed to move freely in the three-dimensional Cartesian space and receives support against gravity. Thus, the patients, especially for those that suffer from neurological injury such as stroke or spinal cord injury, can focus their residual motor control capabilities on essential therapeutic trainings of balance and gait. The real-time force control performance is critical for the BWS unit to provide suitable support and avoid disturbance.
