QCD calculations for collider physics make use of perturbative solutions of renormalisation group equations (RGEs). Ambiguities related to these solutions can contribute significantly to systematic uncertainties of theoretical predictions for physical observables. We propose a general method to estimate these systematic effects using techniques inspired by soft-gluon and transverse-momentum resummation approaches. We first discuss the cases of the evolution of strong coupling $α_s$, collinear parton-distribution functions (PDFs), and transverse-momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs). We then study the implications for precision observables in hadron-collider processes, such as the deep-inelastic scattering structure functions and the transverse-momentum distribution of the lepton pair in Drell-Yan production.

We present an extraction of the unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions that takes into account possible differences between quark flavors and final-state hadrons. The extraction is based on experimental measurements from Drell-Yan processes and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, whose combination is essential to distinguish flavor differences. The analysis is carried out at N$^3$LL accuracy. The extracted flavor-dependent distributions give a very good description of the data ($χ^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.08$). The resulting uncertainties take fully into account also the uncertainties in the determination of the corresponding collinear distributions.

Mass-dependent quark contributions are of great importance to DIS processes. The simplified-ACOT-scheme includes these effects over a wide range of momentum transfers up to next-to-leading order in QCD. In recent years an improvement in the case of neutral current DIS has been achieved by using zero-mass contributions up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) with massive phase-space constraints. In this work, we extend this approach to the case of charged current DIS and provide an implementation in the open-source code APFEL++. The increased precision will be valuable for ongoing and future neutrino programs, the Electron-Ion-Collider and the studies of partonic substructure of hadrons and nuclei. A highly efficient implementation using gridding techniques extends the applicability of the code to the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs).

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

Exclusive heavy-vector-meson photoproduction is a prominent signal in collider experiments with hadron beams. At the highest photon-hadron collision energies, this process is considered as a candidate to constrain gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) at small longitudinal momentum fractions. However, in the framework of collinear factorisation, exclusive particle production is described in terms of generalised parton distributions (GPDs). In this contribution, we investigate at the leading order in $α_s$ the connection between GPDs and PDFs. Our main result is a proposal to quantify the systematic uncertainty inherent to this connection. We put our approach into context with respect to the Shuavev transform. Our uncertainty estimate can be straightforwardly adapted to higher fixed orders and small-$x$ resummations. The question of extrapolating GPDs to vanishing skewness is paramount for the programme of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), notably for the extraction of the radial distributions of partons.

The operator definition of generalised transverse-momentum-dependent (GTMD) distributions is exploited to compute for the first time the full set of one-loop corrections to the off-forward matching functions. These functions allow one to obtain GTMDs in the perturbative regime in terms of generalised parton distributions (GPDs). In the unpolarised case, non-perturbative corrections can be incorporated using recent determinations of transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) distributions. Evolution effects for GTMDs closely follow those for TMDs and can thus be easily accounted for up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. As a by-product, the relevant one-loop anomalous dimensions are derived, confirming previous results. As a practical application, numerical results for a specific kind of GTMDs are presented, highlighting some salient features.

We illustrate how electron Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) with next-to-leading collinear logarithmic accuracy must be employed in the context of perturbative predictions for high-energy $e^+e^-$-collision processes. In particular, we discuss how the renormalisation group equation evolution of such PDFs is affected by the presence of multiple fermion families and their respective mass thresholds, and by the dependences on the choices of the factorisation and renormalisation schemes. We study the impact of the uncertainties associated with the PDFs on physical cross sections, in order to arrive at realistic precision estimates for observables computed with collinear-factorisation formulae. We do so by presenting results for the production of a heavy neutral object as well as for $t\bar{t}$ and $W^+W^-$ pairs, including next-to-leading-order effects of electroweak origin.

The baseline analysis is performed with a Monte Carlo replica method resumming large logarithms at N3LL accuracy. The resulting description of the data is very good ($χ^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.06$). For semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, predictions for multiplicities are normalized by factors that cure the discrepancy with data introduced by higher-order perturbative corrections.

We revisit the evolution of generalised parton distributions (GPDs) in momentum space. We formulate the evolution kernels at one-loop in perturbative QCD (pQCD) in a form suitable for numerical implementation and that allows for an accurate study of their properties. This leads to the first open-source implementation of GPD evolution equations able to cover the entire kinematic region and allowing for heavy-quark-threshold crossings. The numerical implementation of the GPD evolution equations is publicly accessible through the APFEL++ evolution library and is available within the PARTONS framework.
Our formulation makes use of the operator definition of GPDs in light-cone gauge renormalised in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ scheme. For the sake of clarity, we recompute the evolution kernels at one-loop in pQCD, confirming previous calculations. We obtain general conditions on the evolution kernels deriving from the GPD sum rules and show that our formulation obeys these conditions. We analytically show that our calculation reproduces the DGLAP and the ERBL equations in the appropriate limits and that it guarantees the continuity of GPDs. We numerically check that the evolved GPDs fulfil DGLAP and ERBL limits, continuity, and polynomiality. We benchmark our numerical implementation against analytical evolution in conformal space. Finally, we perform a numerical comparison to an existing implementation of GPD evolution finding a general good agreement on the kinematic region accessible to the latter.
This work provides a pedagogical description of GPD evolution equations which benefits from a renewed interest as future colliders, such as the electron-ion colliders in the US and in China, are being designed. It also paves the way to the extension of GPD evolution codes to higher accuracies in pQCD desirable for precision phenomenology at these facilities.

Starting from contemporary models for pion's GPDs fulfilling all constraints imposed by QCD, we compute Compton form factors (CFFs) of pions subjected to deeply virtual Compton scattering. We show the behaviour of CFFs to be gluon-dominated at EIC's kinematics. An overwhelming number of theoretical predictions for hadron colliders require parton distribution functions (PDFs), which are an important ingredient of theory infrastructure for the next generation of high-energy experiments. This whitepaper summarizes the status and future prospects for determination of high-precision PDFs applicable in a wide range of energies and experiments, in particular in precision tests of the Standard Model and in new physics searches at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider and Electron-Ion Collider. We discuss the envisioned advancements in experimental measurements, QCD theory, global analysis methodology, and computing that are necessary to bring unpolarized PDFs in the nucleon to the N2LO and N3LO accuracy in the QCD coupling strength. Special attention is given to the new tasks that emerge in the era of the precision PDF analysis, such as those focusing on the robust control of systematic factors both in experimental measurements and theoretical computations. Various synergies between experimental and theoretical studies of the hadron structure are explored, including opportunities for studying PDFs for nuclear and meson targets, PDFs with electroweak contributions or dependence on the transverse momentum, for incisive comparisons between phenomenological models for the PDFs and computations on discrete lattice, and for cross-fertilization with machine learning/AI approaches. We present in this letter the first systematic feasibility study of accessing generalised parton distributions of the pion at an electron-ion collider through deeply virtual Compton scattering at next-to-leading order. It relies on a state-of-the-art model, able to fulfil by construction all the theoretical constraints imposed on generalised parton distributions. Strikingly, our analysis shows that quarks and gluons interfere destructively and that gluon dominance could be spotted by a sign change of the DVCS beam spin asymmetry.

We introduce a new family of Generalised Parton Distribution models able to fulfil by construction all the theoretical properties imposed by QCD. These models are built on standard Parton Distribution Functions and extended to off-forward kinematics through a well-defined procedure. We apply this strategy on the pion, first handling a simple but insightful algebraic model, and then exploiting state-of-the-art computations obtained in continuum QCD. We compare these models with a more standard one relying on an xFitter extraction of the pion Parton Distribution Functions. The results for both quark and gluon Generalised Parton Distributions are presented and exploited for calculation of Electromagnetic, Gravitational and Compton Form Factors. Results on the latter highlight the relevance of next-to-leading order corrections, even in the so-called valence region.

However, the practical extraction of GPDs for this channel requires a deconvolution procedure, whose feasibility has been disputed. We provide a practical approach to this problem based on a next-to-leading order analysis and a careful study of evolution effects, by exhibiting shadow GPDs with arbitrarily small imprints on DVCS observables at current and future experimental facilities. This shows that DVCS alone will not allow for a model independent extraction of GPDs and a multi-channel analysis is required for this purpose.

Elaborating on the results of a global neural network fit to deeply virtual Compton scattering data, a Bayesian reweighting analysis quantifies the improved determination of the real part of the Compton form factor $\mathcal{H}$. We present MAPFF1.0, a determination of unpolarised charged-pion fragmentation functions (FFs) from a set of single-inclusive $e^+e^-$ annihilation and lepton-nucleon semi-inclusive deep-inelastic-scattering (SIDIS) data. FFs are parametrised in terms of a neural network (NN) and fitted to data exploiting the knowledge of the analytic derivative of the NN itself w.r.t. its free parameters. Uncertainties on the FFs are determined by means of the Monte Carlo sampling method properly accounting for all sources of experimental uncertainties, including that of parton distribution functions. Theoretical predictions for the relevant observables, as well as evolution effects, are computed to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in perturbative QCD. We exploit the flavour sensitivity of the SIDIS measurements delivered by the HERMES and COMPASS experiments to determine a minimally-biased set of seven independent FF combinations. Moreover, we discuss the quality of the fit to the SIDIS data with low virtuality $Q^2$ showing that, as expected, low-$Q^2$ SIDIS measurements are generally harder to describe within a NLO-accurate perturbative framework.

Generalised parton distributions are instrumental to study both the three-dimensional structure and the energy-momentum tensor of the nucleon, and motivate numerous experimental programmes involving hard exclusive measurements. Based on a next-to-leading order analysis and a careful study of evolution effects, we exhibit non-trivial generalised parton distributions with arbitrarily small imprints on deeply virtual Compton scattering observables. This means that in practice the reconstruction of generalised parton distributions from measurements, known as the deconvolution problem, does not possess a unique solution for this channel. In this Letter we discuss the consequences on the extraction of generalised parton distributions from data and advocate for a multi-channel analysis.

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions.
This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC.
The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies.
This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental programs at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the hadronic physics program at Jefferson Lab (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons and nuclei, in both the elastic and deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons from the nucleon enables a model independent determination of its electromagnetic form factors. Also, the deeply-virtual scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons allows unambiguous separation of the different contributions to the cross section of the lepto-production of photons and of lepton-pairs, enabling an accurate determination of the nucleons and nuclei generalized parton distributions, and providing an access to the gravitational form factors. Furthermore, positron beams offer the possibility of alternative tests of the Standard Model of particle physics through the search of a dark photon, the precise measurement of electroweak couplings, and the investigation of charged lepton flavor violation. This document discusses the perspectives of an experimental program with high duty-cycle positron beams at JLab.

In this paper we present a C++ implementation of the analytic derivative of a feed-forward neural network with respect to its free parameters for an arbitrary architecture, known as back-propagation. We dubbed this code NNAD (Neural Network Analytic Derivatives) and interfaced it with the widely-used ceres-solver minimiser to fit neural networks to pseudodata in two different least-squares problems. The first is a direct fit of Legendre polynomials. The second is a somewhat more involved minimisation problem where the function to be fitted takes part in an integral. Finally, using a consistent framework, we assess the efficiency of our analytic derivative formula as compared to numerical and automatic differentiation as provided by ceres-solver. We thus demonstrate the advantage of using NNAD in problems involving both deep or shallow neural networks.

The PDFs account for all of the universal effects of initial-state collinear origin, and are key ingredients in the calculations of cross sections in the so-called structure-function approach. We present both numerical and analytical results, and show that they agree extremely well with each other. The analytical predictions are defined by means of an additive formula that matches a large-$z$ solution that includes all orders in the QED coupling constant $α$, with a small- and intermediate-$z$ solution that includes terms up to ${\cal O}(α^3)$.

The new xFitter 2.0.0 program links to the APFEL code which has implemented generalized matching conditions that enable the switch from $N_F$ to $N_F+1$ active flavors at an arbitrary matching scale $μ_m$. This enables us to generalize the transition between a FFNS and a VFNS and essentially vary continuously between the two schemes; in this sense the matching scale $μ_m$ allows us to unify the FFNS and VFNS in a common framework. This paper provides a brief overview of xFitter with emphasis of these new features.

We present state-of-the-art predictions for the ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino-nucleus cross-sections in charged- and neutral-current scattering. The calculation is performed in the framework of collinear factorisation at NNLO, extended to include the resummation of small-$x$ BFKL effects. Further improvements are made by accounting for the free-nucleon PDF constraints provided by $D$-meson data from LHCb and assessing the impact of nuclear corrections and heavy-quark mass effects. The calculations presented here should play an important role in the interpretation of future data from neutrino telescopes such as IceCube and KM3NET, and highlight the opportunities that astroparticle experiments offer to study the strong interactions.

We present NNFF1.1h, a new determination of unidentified charged-hadron fragmentation functions (FFs) and their uncertainties. Experimental measurements of transverse-momentum distributions for charged-hadron production in proton-(anti)proton collisions at the Tevatron and at the LHC are used to constrain a set of FFs originally determined from electron-positron annihilation data. Our analysis is performed at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. We find that the hadron-collider data is consistent with the electron-positron data and that it significantly constrains the gluon FF. We verify the reliability of our results upon our choice of the kinematic cut in the hadron transverse momentum applied to the hadron-collider data and their consistency with NNFF1.0, our previous determination of the FFs of charged pions, kaons, and protons/antiprotons.

A resolution of this tension incorporating $\ln(1/x)$-resummation terms into the HERAPDF fits is investigated using the xFitter program. The kinematic region where this resummation is important is delineated. Such high-energy resummation not only gives a better description of the data, particularly of the longitudinal structure function $F_L$, it also results in a gluon PDF which is steeply rising at low $x$ for low scales, $Q^2 \simeq 2.5$ GeV$^2$, contrary to the fixed-order NLO and NNLO gluon PDF.

Precision phenomenology at the LHC requires accounting for both higher-order QCD and electroweak corrections as well as for photon-initiated subprocesses. Building upon the recent NNPDF3.1 fit, in this work the photon content of the proton is determined within a global analysis supplemented by the LUXqed constraint relating the photon PDF to lepton-proton scattering structure functions: NNPDF3.1luxQED. The uncertainties on the resulting photon PDF are at the level of a few percent, with photons carrying up to 0.5% of the proton's momentum. We study the phenomenological implications of NNPDF3.1luxQED at the LHC for Drell-Yan, vector boson pair, top quark pair, and Higgs plus vector boson production. We find that photon-initiated contributions can be significant for many processes, leading to corrections of up to 20%. Our results represent a state-of-the-art determination of the partonic structure of the proton including its photon component.

We show that the well-known obstacle for working with the zero-mass variable flavor number scheme, namely, the omission of O(1) mass power corrections close to the conventional heavy flavor matching point (HFMP) mu_b=m, can be easily overcome. For this it is sufficient to take advantage of the freedom in choosing the position of the HFMP. We demonstrate that by choosing a sufficiently large HFMP, which could be as large as 10 times the mass of the heavy quark, one can achieve the following improvements: 1) above the HFMP the size of missing power corrections O(m) is restricted by the value of mu_b and, therefore, the error associated with their omission can be made negligible; 2) additional prescriptions for the definition of cross-sections are not required; 3) the resummation accuracy is maintained and 4) contrary to the common lore we find that the discontinuity of alpha_s and pdfs across thresholds leads to improved continuity in predictions for observables. We have considered a large set of proton-proton and electron-proton collider processes, many through NNLO QCD, that demonstrate the broad applicability of our proposal.

We present a determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton in which NLO and NNLO fixed-order calculations are supplemented by NLLx small-x resummation. Deep inelastic structure functions are computed consistently at NLO+NLLx or NNLO+NLLx, while for hadronic processes small-x resummation is included only in the PDF evolution, with kinematic cuts introduced to ensure the fitted data lie in a region where the fixed-order calculation of the hard cross-sections is reliable. In all other respects, the fits use the same methodology and are based on the same global dataset as the recent NNPDF3.1 analysis. We demonstrate that the inclusion of small-x resummation leads to a quantitative improvement in the perturbative description of the HERA inclusive and charm-production reduced cross-sections in the small x region. The impact of the resummation in our fits is greater at NNLO than at NLO, because fixed-order calculations have a perturbative instability at small x due to large logarithms that can be cured by resummation. We explore the phenomenological implications of PDF sets with small-x resummation for the longitudinal structure function $F_L$ at HERA, for parton luminosities and LHC benchmark cross-sections, for ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleus cross-sections, and for future high-energy lepton-proton colliders such as the LHeC.

The strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z)$ is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic $ep$ scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of $α_s(M_Z)$ at the $Z$-boson mass $m_Z$ are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be $α_s(M_Z)=0.1166\,(19)_{\rm exp}\,(24)_{\rm th}$. Complementary, $α_s(M_Z)$ is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value $α_s(M_Z)=0.1147\,(25)_{\rm tot}$ obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. The impact of the jet data on the PDFs is studied. The running of the strong coupling is tested at different values of the renormalisation scale and the results are found to be in agreement with expectations.

xFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). xFitter version 2.0.0 has recently been released, and offers an expanded set of tools and options. It incorporates experimental data from a wide range of experiments including fixed-target, Tevatron, HERA, and LHC. xFitter can analyze this data up to next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) in perturbation theory with a variety of theoretical calculations including numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools which help visualize the results. While primarily based on the collinear factorization foundation, xFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) PDFs. The package can be used to study the impact of new precise measurements from hadron colliders, and also assess the impact of future colliders. This paper provides a brief overview of xFitter with emphasis of the new version 2.0.0 features.
