In recent years, it has become possible to measure not only the magnitude of the electric ($G_E$) and magnetic ($G_M$) form factors of spin $\frac{1}{2}$ baryons, but also to measure the relative phases of those quantities in the timelike kinematic region. Aiming to interpret present $|G_E/G_M|$ data on hyperons of the baryon octet, as well as to predict future data, we present model calculations of that ratio for large invariant 4-momentum square $q^2$ in the timelike region ($q^2>0$). Without any further parameter fitting, we extend to the timelike region a covariant quark model previously developed to describe the kinematic spacelike region ($q^2 \le 0$) of the baryon octet form factors. The model takes into account both the effects of valence quarks and the excitations of the meson cloud which dresses the baryons. We report here that our results are in good agreement with very recent data from BESIII, within the uncertainty limits of our model. We also make new predictions which may be tested in the near future, when the range of the present measurements is expanded to the 20--50 GeV$^2$ region.

We study the axial-vector and the induced pseudoscalar form factors associated with the weak transitions between the octet baryon members in nuclear medium, using a covariant constituent quark model. We extend previous calculations of the axial transition form factors from the vacuum (free space) to the nuclear medium (symmetric nuclear matter). The extension of the model to the nuclear medium takes into account the modifications of the properties of hadrons in the medium (masses and coupling constants), as determined by the quark-meson coupling model. The axial-vector ($G_A$) and the induced pseudoscalar ($G_P$) form factors are evaluated for different values of the nuclear density $ρ$ in terms of the square transfer momentum $q^2= -Q^2$. We conclude that in general the $G_A$ and $G_P$ form factors are reduced in the nuclear medium. The reduction is stronger for light baryons and high densities. The medium modifications are milder for the heavier octet baryons, particularly at large $Q^2$. The calculations presented here can be used to estimate the cross sections of neutrino and antineutrino scattering with nucleus, and neutrino and antineutrino scattering with hyperons bound to a nucleus, as well as those in the cores of compact stars.

The $γ^\ast N \to N(1520)$ transition has a property that differs from the other low-lying nucleon resonance amplitudes: the magnitude of the transverse helicity amplitudes. The transition helicity amplitudes are defined in terms of square-transfer momentum $q^2$, or $Q^2=-q^2$. Near the photon point ($Q^2=0$) there is a significant difference in the magnitude of the transverse amplitudes: $A_{3/2}$ is very large and $A_{1/2}$ is very small. This atypical behavior contrasts with the relation between the amplitudes at the pseudothreshold [the limit where the nucleon and the $N(1520)$ are both at rest and $Q^2 <0$], where $A_{3/2} = A_{1/2}/\sqrt{3}$, and also in the large-$Q^2$ region, where theory and data suggest that $A_{3/2}$ is suppressed relative to $A_{1/2}$. In the present work, we look for the source of the suppression of the $A_{1/2}$ amplitude at $Q^2=0$. The result is easy to understand in first approximation, when we look into the relation between the transverse amplitudes and the elementary form factors, defined by a gauge-invariant parametrization of the $γ^\ast N \to N(1520)$ transition current, near $Q^2=0$. There is a partial cancellation between contributions of two elementary form factors near $Q^2=0$. We conclude, however, that the correlation between the two elementary form factors at $Q^2=0$ is not sufficient to explain the transverse amplitude data below $Q^2 = 1$ GeV$^2$. The description of the dependence of the transverse amplitudes on $Q^2$ requires the determination of the scale of variation of the elementary form factors in the range $Q^2=0$...0.5 GeV$^2$,a region with almost non existent data. We conclude at the end that the low-$Q^2$ data for the transverse amplitudes can be well described when we relate the scale of variation of the elementary form factors with the nucleon dipole form factor.

We study the role of the meson cloud on the electromagnetic transitions from decuplet ($B'$) to octet ($B$) baryons in terms of the squared four-momentum transfer $q^2$. In the quark model framework, the meson cloud dressing of the quark cores gives important contributions to the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ transition form factors. In the present work, we estimate the meson cloud contributions of all decuplet to octet baryon transitions ($γ^\ast B \to B'$ or $B' \to γ^\ast B$). Models that combine valence quark effects with pion and kaon cloud dressing provide a fair description of the radiative decays of decuplet to octet baryons, namely the $Σ^0(1385) \to γΛ(1116)$ and $Σ^+(1385) \to γΣ^+ (1193)$ decays. Previous studies indicated the relevance of the pion cloud effects on the $B^\prime \to γ^\ast B$ transition, but also suggested that the kaon cloud contributions may be important in the timelike region. We combine then the contributions of the bare core, estimated by a covariant quark model, with $q^2$-dependent contributions of pion and kaon clouds. We use the framework to calculate the Dalitz decay rates and the Dalitz decay widths of decuplet baryons in octet baryons with di-electrons ($B' \to e^+ e^- B$) or di-muons ($B' \to μ^+ μ^- B$). We conclude, based on the magnitude of our results, that most estimates of the $B' \to e^+ e^- B$ Dalitz decay widths may be tested at HADES and PANDA (GSI) in a near future. We discuss also the possibility of measuring the $Δ(1232) \to μ^+ μ^- N$ and $Σ^0 (1385) \to μ^+ μ^- Λ(1116)$ decay widths in some facilities, based on the estimated branching ratios.

Recent experimental and theoretical advancements have led to significant progress in our understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons ($N$), nucleon excitations ($N^\ast$), and other baryons. These breakthroughs have been made possible by the capabilities of modern facilities, enabling the induction of photo- and electro-excitation of nucleon resonances. Recent experimental advances have sparked notable developments in theoretical approaches. New theoretical methods have been tested and proven to be robust, marking the beginning of a new era in our understanding on baryons. We present a comprehensive review of progress in experimental data on $γ^\ast N \to N^\ast$ reactions. Additionally, we discuss various analyses and theoretical results. Some of these methods have matured in their predictive power, offering new perspectives on exotic hadrons with multiquark components. We place special emphasis on both the low-$Q^2$ and large-$Q^2$ regions to reinforce crucial physical constraints on observables that hold in these limits. Furthermore, we illustrate that the combination of lattice QCD with chiral effective field theory and quark models, respectively, proves beneficial in interpreting data and applying constraints within those different regimes. As a practical contribution and for future reference, we review the formulas for helicity amplitudes, multipole form factors and the relations between these two sets of functions for transitions to resonances with general spin $J \geq \frac{1}{2}$. These formulas are ubiquitous and play a pivotal role in experimental and theoretical studies on baryon structure. Notably, the multipole transition form factors for $J \ge \frac{3}{2}$ resonances serve as valuable tools to test perturbative QCD results in the large-$Q^2$ region, thanks to the correlations between electric and magnetic transition form factors.

The electromagnetic structure of the baryons is modified in the nuclear medium. The modifications can be inferred from the comparison between the electromagnetic form factors in medium with the respective form factor in vacuum. Of particular interest is the ratio between the electric and magnetic form factors in medium ($G_E^*/G_M^*$) and vacuum ($G_E/G_M$) of the octet baryon. The deviation of the double ratios ($G_E^*/G_M^*)/(G_E/G_M)$ from unity measures the impact of the medium modification of the electromagnetic structure in a nuclear medium. Measurements of the double ratios $(G_E^*/G_M^*)/(G_E/G_M)$ for different nuclear densities may become available in a near future using the polarization-transfer method developed at Jefferson Lab. We present estimates of the double ratios of octet baryons based on a covariant constituent quark model, which takes into account pion cloud excitations of the baryon cores, for different nuclear densities. Our results manifest different features, namely, enhancement or quenching depending on the baryon flavor content.

The free parameters of the $Ω^-$ wave function, including a $S$-wave state and two independent $D$-wave states radial wave functions and the admixture coefficients are fixed by the comparison with the lattice QCD data in the spacelike region ($Q^2=-q^2 \le 0$) and with the recent $e^+ e^- \to Ω^- \bar Ω^+$ data from CLEO in the timelike region ($q^2 > 0$). The estimates in the timelike region for square momentum transfer $q^2 \ge 4 M_Ω^2$ are based on large-$q^2$ asymptotic relations ($M_Ω$ is the $Ω^-$ mass). We examine also the impact of the large-$Q^2$ correlations between different form factors and analyze the possible solutions. The electric quadrupole and the magnetic octupole moments of the $Ω^-$, and the $e^+ e^- \to Ω^- \bar Ω^+$ integrated cross sections for very large $q^2$ are estimated based on the model results.

Our starting point is the covariant spectator quark model constrained by data in the spacelike kinematical region ($Q^2 = -q^2 >0$). The model is used to estimate the contributions of valence quarks to the transition form factors, and one obtains a fair description of the Dirac form factor at intermediate and large $Q^2$. For the Pauli form factor there is evidence that beyond the quark-core contributions there are also significant contributions of meson cloud effects. Combining the quark-core model with an effective description of the meson cloud effects, we derive a parametrization of the spacelike data that can be extended covariantly to the timelike region. This extension enabled us to estimate the Dalitz decay widths of the $N(1535)$ resonance, among other observables. Our calculations can help in the interpretation of the present experiments at HADES ($pp$ collisions and others).

The data associated with the electromagnetic excitations of the nucleon ($γ^\ast N \to N^\ast$) are usually parametrized by helicity amplitudes at the resonance $N^\ast$ rest frame. The properties of the $γ^\ast N \to N^\ast$ transition current at low $Q^2$ can be, however, better understood when expressed in terms of structure form factors, particularly near the pseudothreshold, when the magnitude of the photon three-momentum vanishes ($|{\bf q}| =0$). At the pseudothreshold the invariant four-momentum square became $q^2= (M_R-M_N)^2$, well in the timelike region $Q^2 =- q^2 < 0$ [$M_N$ and $M_R$ are the mass of the nucleon and of the resonance, respectively]. In the helicity amplitude representation, the amplitudes have well-defined dependences on $|{\bf q}|$, near the pseudothreshold, and there are correlations between different amplitudes. Those constraints are often ignored in the empirical parametrizations of the helicity amplitudes. In the present work, we show that the structure of the transition current near the pseudothreshold has an impact on the parametrizations of the data. We present a method which modifies analytic parametrizations of the data at low $Q^2$, in order to take into account the constraints of the transition amplitudes near the pseudothreshold. The model dependence of the parametrizations on the low-$Q^2$ data is studied in detail.

Experimentally, those form factors can be extracted from the $e^+ e^- \to B \bar B$ and $p \bar p \to B \bar B$ processes, where $B$ stands for a general baryon. Our results are based on calculations of the elastic electromagnetic form factors in the spacelike region ($Q^2 = - q^2 > 0$) within a covariant quark model. To connect the results in the spacelike region to those in the timelike region, we use asymptotic relations between the two regions which are constraints derived from analyticity and unitarity. We calculate the effective form factors $|G(q^2)|$ and compare them with the integrated cross section data $σ_{\rm Born} (q^2)$ from BaBar, BES III, and CLEO. The available data are at the moment restricted to $Λ$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^-$, $Ξ^-$, $Ξ^0$, and $Ω^-$ as well as to $e^+ e^- \to Λ\bar Σ^0 $ and $e^+ e^- \to Σ^0 \bar Λ$ reactions. Our results provide useful reference for future experiments and seem to indicate that the present data are still in the non-perturbative QCD region, while the onset for the asymptotic constraints from analyticity and unitarity happens much before the region of the perturbative QCD falloff of the form factors.

Those relations are improved in order to satisfy a fundamental constraint between the electric and Coulomb quadrupole form factors in the long wavelength limit, when the photon three-momentum vanishes (Siegert's theorem). Inspired by those relations, we study alternative parametrizations for the neutron electric form factor. The parameters of the new form are then determined by a combined fit to the $G_{En}$ and the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ quadrupole form factor data. We obtain a very good description of the $G_E$ and $G_C$ data when we combine the pion cloud contributions with small valence quark contributions to the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ quadrupole form factors. The best description of the data is obtained when the second momentum of $G_{En}$ is $r_n^4 \simeq -0.4$ fm$^4$. We conclude that the square radii associated with $G_E$ and $G_C$, $r_E^2$ and $r_C^2$, respectively, are large, revealing the long extension of the pion cloud. We conclude also that those square radii are related by $r_E^2 - r_C^2 = 0.6 \pm 0.2$ fm$^2$. The last result is mainly the consequence of the pion cloud effects and Siegert's theorem.

The novel measurements of the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ Coulomb quadrupole form factor in the range $Q^2=0.04$--0.13 GeV$^2$ changed the trend of the previous data. With the new data the electric and Coulomb form factors are both in remarkable agreement with estimates of the pion cloud contributions to the quadrupole form factors at low $Q^2$. The pion cloud contributions to the electric and Coulomb form factors can be parametrized by the relations $G_E \propto G_{En}/ \left(1 + \frac{Q^2}{2M_Δ(M_Δ-M)}\right)$ and $G_C \propto G_{En}$, where $G_{En}$ is the neutron electric form factor, and $M$, $M_Δ$ are the nucleon and $Δ$ masses, respectively. Those parametrizations are in full agreement with Siegert's theorem, which states that $G_E= \frac{M_Δ-M}{2M_Δ} G_C$ at the pseudothreshold, when $Q^2=-(M_Δ-M)^2$, and improve previous parametrizations. Also a small valence quark component estimated by a covariant quark model contributes to this agreement. The combination of the new data with the new parametrization for $G_E$ concludes an intense period of studying the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ quadrupole form factors at low $Q^2$, with the agreement between theory and data.

We use light-front Holography to estimate the valence quark and the meson cloud contributions to the nucleon axial form factor. The free couplings of the holographic model are determined by the empirical data and by the information extracted from lattice QCD. The holographic model provides a good description of the empirical data when we consider a meson cloud mixture of about 30\% in the physical nucleon state. The estimate of the valence quark contribution to the nucleon axial form factor compares well with the lattice QCD data for small pion masses. Our estimate of the meson cloud contribution to the nucleon axial form factor has a slower falloff with the square momentum transfer compared to typical estimates from quark models with meson cloud dressing.

We present analytic parametrizations for the $γ^\ast N \to N(1440)$ form factors derived from light-front holography in leading twist approximation. The new parametrizations describe the electromagnetic form factors using analytic functions dependent on the masses of the $ρ$ meson and respective radial excitations, as well as the masses of the nucleon and the resonance $N(1440)$. The free parameters of the model, associated with three independent couplings, are interpreted as bare couplings, and are fixed by the nucleon data for large $Q^2$. The proposed parametrizations compare remarkably well with the empirical data for $Q^2 > 2$ GeV$^2$, corroborating the dominant role of the valence quark degrees of freedom in the $γ^\ast N \to N(1440)$ transition.

The structure of the nucleon and the first radial excitation of the nucleon, the Roper, $N(1440)$, is studied within the formalism of Light-Front holography. The nucleon elastic form factors and $γ^\ast N \to N(1440)$ transition form factors are calculated under the assumption of the dominance of the valence quark degrees of freedom. Contrary to the previous studies, the bare parameters of the model associated with the valence quark are fixed by the empirical data for large momentum transfer ($Q^2$) assuming that the corrections to the three-quark picture (meson cloud contributions) are suppressed. The $γ^\ast N \to N(1440)$ transition form factors are then calculated without any adjustable parameters. Our estimates are compared with results from models based on valence quarks and others. The model compares well with the $γ^\ast N \to N(1440)$ transition form factor data, suggesting that meson cloud effects are not large, except in the region $Q^2< 1.5$ GeV$^2$. In particular, the meson cloud contributions for the Pauli form factor are small.

The representation of the wave functions of the nucleon resonances within a relativistic framework is a complex task. In a nonrelativistic framework the orthogonality between states can be imposed naturally. In a relativistic generalization, however, the derivation of the orthogonality condition between states can be problematic, particularly when the states have different masses. In this work we study the $N(1520)$ and $N(1535)$ states using a relativistic framework. We considered wave functions derived in previous works, but impose the orthogonality between the nucleon and resonance states using the properties of the nucleon, ignoring the difference of masses between the states (semirelativistic approximation). The $N(1520)$ and $N(1535)$ wave functions are then defined without any adjustable parameters and are used to make predictions for the valence quark contributions to the transition form factors. The predictions compare well with the data particularly for high momentum transfer, where the dominance of the quark degrees of freedom is expected.

The covariant spectator quark model, tested before in a variety of electromagnetic baryon excitations, is applied here to the $γ^\ast N \to N^\ast(1520)$ reaction in the timelike regime. The transition form factors are first parametrized in the spacelike region in terms of a valence quark core model together with a parametrization of the meson cloud contribution. The form factor behavior in the timelike region is then predicted, as well as the $N^\ast(1520) \to γN$ decay width and the $N^\ast (1520)$ Dalitz decay, $N^\ast (1520) \to e^+ e^- N$. Our results may help in the interpretation of dielectron production from elementary $pp$ collisions and from the new generation of HADES results using a pion beam. In the $q^2=0$--1 GeV$^2$ range we conclude that the {\it QED approximation} (a $q^2$ independent form factor model) underestimates the electromagnetic coupling of the $N^\ast(1520)$ from 1 up to 2 orders of magnitude. We conclude also that the $N^\ast (1520)$ and the $Δ(1232)$ Dalitz decay widths are comparable.

The large $N_c$ limit provides relations that can be used to calculate the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ quadrupole form factors at low and intermediate $Q^2$ under the assumption of the pion cloud dominance. There are two limitations in those parametrizations. First, the parametrization of the Coulomb quadrupole form factor underestimate the low $Q^2$ data. Second, when extrapolated for the timelike region, the form factors violate Siegert's theorem by terms of the order $1/N_c^2$. We propose here corrections to the parametrization of the electric quadrupole form factor, which violate Siegert's theorem only by terms of the order $1/N_c^4$. Combining the improved large $N_c$ pion cloud parametrizations with the valence quark contributions based on a covariant quark model for the quadrupole transition form factors, we obtain an extrapolation to the timelike region consistent with Siegert's theorem, and accomplish also a very good description of the data.

We present some predictions for the $γ^\ast N \to N^\ast$ transition amplitudes, where $N$ is the nucleon, and $N^\ast$ is a nucleon excitation from the third resonance region. First we estimate the transition amplitudes associated with the second radial excitation of the nucleon, interpreted as the $N(1710)$ state, using the covariant spectator quark model. After that, we combine some results from the covariant spectator quark model with the framework of the single quark transition model, to make predictions for the $γ^\ast N \to N^\ast$ transition amplitudes, where $N^\ast$ is a member of the $SU(6)$-multiplet $[70,1^-]$. Improved empirical parametrizations of the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ and $γ^\ast N \to N(1520)$ helicity amplitudes and the Siegert's theorem

In the nucleon electroexcitation reactions, $γ^\ast N \to R$, where $R$ is a nucleon resonance ($N^\ast$), the electric amplitude $E$, and the longitudinal amplitude $S_{1/2}$, are related by $E \propto \fracω{|{\bf q}|}S_{1/2}$, at the pseudo-threshold limit ($|{\bf q}| \to 0$), where $ω$ and $|{\bf q}|$ are respectively the energy and the magnitude of three-momentum of the photon. The previous relation is usually refereed as the Siegert's theorem. The form of the electric amplitude, defined in terms of the transverse amplitudes $A_{1/2}$ and $A_{3/2}$, and the explicit coefficients of the relation, depend on the angular momentum and parity ($J^P$) of the resonance $R$. The Siegert's theorem is the consequence of the structure of the electromagnetic transition current, which induces constraints between the electromagnetic form factors in the pseudo-threshold limit. In the present work, we study the implications of the Siegert's theorem for the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ and $γ^\ast N \to N(1520)$ transitions. For the $γ^\ast N \to N(1520)$ transition, in addition to the relation between electric amplitude and longitudinal amplitude, we obtain also a relation between the two transverse amplitudes: $A_{1/2}= A_{3/2} /\sqrt{3}$, at the pseudo-threshold. % The constraints at the pseudo-threshold are tested for the MAID2007 parametrizations of the reactions under discussion. New parametrizations for the amplitudes $A_{1/2}$, $A_{3/2}$ and $S_{1/2}$, for the $γ^\ast N \to Δ(1232)$ and $γ^\ast N \to N(1520)$ transitions, valid for small and large $Q^2$, are proposed. The new parametrizations are consistent with both: the pseudo-threshold constraints (Siegert's theorem) and the empirical data.

Some empirical parametrizations of the $γ^\ast N \to N(1535)$ transition amplitudes violates the Siegert's theorem, that relates the longitudinal and the transverse amplitudes, in the pseudo-threshold limit (nucleon and resonance at rest). In the case of the electromagnetic transition from the nucleon (mass $M$) to the resonance $N(1525)$ (mass $M_R$), the Siegert's theorem is sometimes expressed by the relation $|{\bf q}| A_{1/2}= λS_{1/2}$ in the pseudo-threshold limit, when the photon momentum $|{\bf q}|$ vanishes, and $λ= \sqrt{2} (M_R -M)$. In this article, we argue that the Siegert's theorem should be expressed by the relation $A_{1/2} = λ\frac{S_{1/2}}{ |{\bf q}|}$, in the limit $|{\bf q}| \to 0$. This result is a consequence of the relation $S_{1/2} \propto |{\bf q}|$, when $|{\bf q}| \to 0$, as suggested by the analysis of the transition form factors and by the orthogonality between the nucleon and $N(1535)$ states. We propose then new empirical parametrizations for the $γ^\ast N \to N(1535)$ helicity amplitudes, that are consistent with the data and the Siegert's theorem. The proposed parametrization follow closely the MAID2007 parametrization, except for a small deviation in the amplitudes $A_{1/2}$ and $S_{1/2}$ when $Q^2 < 1.5$ GeV$^2$.

The $Δ(1232) \to γ^\ast N$ magnetic dipole form factor ($G_M^\ast$) is described here within a new covariant model that combines the valence quark core together with the pion cloud contributions. The pion cloud term is parameterized by two terms: one connected to the pion electromagnetic form factor, the other to the photon interaction with intermediate baryon states. The model can be used in studies of pp and heavy ion collisions. In the timelike region this new model improves the results obtained with a constant form factor model fixed at its value at zero momentum transfer. At the same time, and in contrast to the Iachello model, this new model predicts a peak for the transition form factor at the expected position, i.e. at the $ρ$ mass pole. We calculate the decay of the $Δ\to γN$ transition, the Dalitz decay ($Δ\to e^+ e^- N$), and the $Δ$ mass distribution function. The impact of the model on dilepton spectra in pp collisions is also discussed.

We study the weak interaction axial form factors of the octet baryons, within the covariant spectator quark model, focusing on the dependence of four-momentum transfer squared, Q^2. In our model the axial form factors G_A(Q^2) (axial-vector form factor) and G_P(Q^2) (induced pseudoscalar form factor), are calculated based on the constituent quark axial form factors and the octet baryon wave functions. The quark axial current is parametrized by the two constituent quark form factors, the axial-vector form factor g_A^q(Q^2), and the induced pseudoscalar form factor g_P^q(Q^2). The baryon wave functions are composed of a dominant S-state and a P-state mixture for the relative angular momentum of the quarks. First, we study in detail the nucleon case. We assume that the quark axial-vector form factor g_A^q(Q^2) has the same function form as that of the quark electromagnetic isovector form factor. The remaining parameters of the model, the P-state mixture and the Q^2-dependence of g_P^q(Q^2), are determined by a fit to the nucleon axial form factor data obtained by lattice QCD simulations with large pion masses. In this lattice QCD regime the meson cloud effects are small, and the physics associated with the valence quarks can be better calibrated. Once the valence quark model is calibrated, we extend the model to the physical regime, and use the low Q^2 experimental data to estimate the meson cloud contributions for G_A(Q^2) and G_P(Q^2). Using the calibrated quark axial form factors, and the generalization of the nucleon wave function for the other octet baryon members, we make predictions for all the possible weak interaction axial form factors G_A(Q^2) and G_P(Q^2) of the octet baryons. The results are compared with the corresponding experimental data for G_A(0), and with the estimates of baryon-meson models based on SU(6) symmetry.

The valence quark contributions to the electromagnetic form factors and helicity transition amplitudes are estimated from the covariant structure of the $N^\ast(1520)$ wave function calibrated by the experimental data for large squared momentum transfer $Q^2$. The difference between the model results and the experimental data is then used to parameterize the low $Q^2$ behavior, where meson cloud effects are assumed to dominate. This parametrization can be very useful for future studies of the reaction, as well as for the extension of the transition form factors to the timelike region.

We study the octet to decuplet baryon electromagnetic transitions using the covariant spectator quark model, and predict the transition magnetic dipole form factors for those involving the strange baryons. Utilizing SU(3) symmetry, the valence quark contributions are supplemented by the pion cloud dressing based on the one estimated in the $γ^\ast N \to Δ$ reaction. Although the valence quark contributions are dominant in general, the pion cloud effects turn out to be very important to describe the experimental data. We also show that, other mesons besides the pion in particular the kaon, may be relevant for some reactions such as $γ^\ast Σ^+ \to Σ^{*+}$, based on our analysis for the radiative decay widths of the strange decuplet baryons.

Studies of the structure of excited baryons are key to the N* program at Jefferson Lab. Within the first year of data taking with the Hall B CLAS12 detector following the 12 GeV upgrade, a dedicated experiment will aim to extract the N* electrocouplings at high photon virtualities Q2. This experiment will allow exploration of the structure of N* resonances at the highest photon virtualities ever yet achieved, with a kinematic reach up to Q2 = 12 GeV2. This high-Q2 reach will make it possible to probe the excited nucleon structures at distance scales ranging from where effective degrees of freedom, such as constituent quarks, are dominant through the transition to where nearly massless bare-quark degrees of freedom are relevant. In this document, we present a detailed description of the physics that can be addressed through N* structure studies in exclusive meson electroproduction. The discussion includes recent advances in reaction theory for extracting N* electrocouplings from meson electroproduction off protons, along with QCD-based approaches to the theoretical interpretation of these fundamental quantities. This program will afford access to the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interaction responsible for resonance formation, and will be crucial in understanding the nature of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in baryons, and how excited nucleons emerge from QCD.

We study the $γ^\ast Λ\to Σ^0$ transition form factors by applying the covariant spectator quark model. Using the parametrization for the baryon core wave functions as well as for the pion cloud dressing obtained in a previous work, we calculate the dependence on the momentum transfer squared, $Q^2$, of the electromagnetic transition form factors. The magnetic form factor is dominated by the valence quark contributions. The final result for the transition magnetic moment, a combination of the quark core and pion cloud effects, turns out to give a value very close to the data. The pion cloud contribution, although small, pulls the final result towards the experimental value The final result, $μ_{ΛΣ^0}= -1.486 μ_N$, is about one and a half standard deviations from the central value in PDG, $μ_{ΛΣ^0}= -1.61 \pm 0.08 μ_N$. Thus, a modest improvement in the statistics of the experiment would permit the confirmation or rejection of the present result. It is also predicted that small but nonzero values for the electric form factor in the finite $Q^2$ region, as a consequence of the pion cloud dressing.

We study the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors in nuclear matter using the covariant spectator quark model extended to the nuclear matter regime. The parameters of the model in vacuum are fixed by the study of the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors. In nuclear matter the changes in hadron properties are calculated by including the relevant hadron masses and the modification of the pion-baryon coupling constants calculated in the quark-meson coupling model. In nuclear matter the magnetic form factors of the octet baryons are enhanced in the low $Q^2$ region, while the electric form factors show a more rapid variation with $Q^2$. The results are compared with the modification of the bound proton electromagnetic form factors observed at Jefferson Lab. In addition, the corresponding changes for the bound neutron are predicted.

We estimate the valence quark contributions for the gamma* Y -> Lambda* (Y=Lambda, Sigma0) electromagnetic transition form factors. We focus particularly on the case Lambda*=Lambda(1670) as an analog reaction with gamma* N -> N(1535). The results are compared with those obtained from chiral unitary model, where the Lambda* resonance is dynamically generated and thus the electromagnetic structure comes directly from the meson cloud excitation of the baryon ground states. The form factors for the case Y=Sigma0 in particular, depend crucially on the two real phase (sign) combination, a phase between the Lambda and Lambda* states, and the other, the phase between the Lambda and Sigma0 radial wave functions. Depending on the combination of these two phases, the form factors for the gamma* Sigma0 -> Lambda* reaction can be enhanced or suppressed. Therefore, there is a possibility to determine the phase combination by experiments.

We study the octet baryon electromagnetic properties by applying the covariant spectator quark model, and provide covariant parametrization that can be used to study baryon electromagnetic reactions. While we use the lattice QCD data in the large pion mass regime (small pion cloud effects) to determine the parameters of the model in the valence quark sector, we use the nucleon physical and octet baryon magnetic moment data to parameterize the pion cloud contributions. The valence quark contributions for the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors are estimated by extrapolating the lattice parametrization in the large pion mass regime to the physical regime. As for the pion cloud contributions, we parameterize them in a covariant, phenomenological manner, combined with SU(3) symmetry. We also discuss the impact of the pion cloud effects on the octet baryon electromagnetic form factors and their radii.

It is shown that the helicity amplitudes A_1/2 and S_1/2 in the gamma N -> N(1535) reaction, can be well related by S_1/2 = -\frac{\sqrt{1+τ}}{\sqrt{2}} \frac{M_S^2-M^2}{2 M_S Q} A_1/2 in the region Q^2 > 2 GeV^2, where M and M_S are the nucleon and N(1535) masses, q^2=-Q^2 the four-momentum transfer squared, and tau=\sfrac{Q^2}{(M_S+M)^2}. The observed relation is tested by the experimental data and the MAID parametrization. A direct consequence of the relation is that the assumption,|A_1/2| >> |S_1/2|, is not valid for high Q^2. Instead, both amplitudes A_1/2 and S_1/2 have the same Q^2 dependence in the high Q^2 region, aside from that S_{1/2} has an extra factor,-\sfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\sfrac{M_S-M}{2M_S}. The origin of this relation is interpreted in a perspective of a quark model.

The Omega- has an extremely long lifetime, and is the most stable of the baryons with spin 3/2. Therefore the Omega- magnetic moment is very accurately known. Nevertheless, its electric quadrupole moment was never measured, although estimates exist in different formalisms. In principle, lattice QCD simulations provide at present the most appropriate way to estimate the Omega- form factors, as function of the square of the transferred four-momentum, Q2, since it describes baryon systems at the physical mass for the strange quark. However, lattice QCD form factors, and in particular GE2, are determined at finite Q2 only, and the extraction of the electric quadrupole moment, Q_Omega= GE2(0) e/(2 M_Omega), involves an extrapolation of the numerical lattice results. In this work we reproduce the lattice QCD data with a covariant spectator quark model for Omega- which includes a mixture of S and two D states for the relative quark-diquark motion. Once the model is calibrated, it is used to determine Q_Omega. Our prediction is Q_Omega= (0.96 +/- 0.02)*10^(-2) efm2 [GE2(0)=0.680 +/- 0.012].

Two processes are important in the transition: a photon couples to the individual quarks of the Delta(1600) core (quark core), and a photon couples to the intermediate pion-baryon states (pion cloud). While the quark core contributions are estimated assuming Delta(1600) as the first radial excitation of Delta(1232), the pion cloud contributions are estimated based on an analogy with the gamma N -> Delta(1232) transition. To estimate the pion cloud contributions in the gamma N -> Delta(1600) transition, we include the relevant intermediate states, pi-N, pi-Delta, pi-N(1440) and pi-Delta(1600).
