We compute the bulk, $ζ$, and shear, $η$, viscosity over entropy density, $s$, for the QCD matter formed in small collision systems at LHC. We consider a scenario of the String Percolation Model by proposing a global form of the color reduction factor that describes both the thermodynamic limit and its maximum deviation due to small-bounded effects. Our method involves estimations at vanishing baryon-chemical potential, assuming local equilibrium for string clusters in the initial state. To compute $η/s$, we employed a kinetic approach that accounts QCD states as an ideal gas of partons, while $ζ/s$ is computed by using two different approaches: a simple kinetic formula and the causal dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics formulation. Our results align with Lattice QCD computations and Bayesian methods and are consistent with holographic conjecture bounds. Furthermore, our findings support the notion of a strongly interacting medium, similar to that observed in nuclear collisions, albeit with a phase transition occurring outside the thermodynamic limit.

Hot QCD physics studies the nuclear strong force under extreme temperature and densities. Experimentally these conditions are achieved via high-energy collisions of heavy ions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the past decade, a unique and substantial suite of data was collected at RHIC and the LHC, probing hydrodynamics at the nucleon scale, the temperature dependence of the transport properties of quark-gluon plasma, the phase diagram of nuclear matter, the interaction of quarks and gluons at different scales and much more. This document, as part of the 2023 nuclear science long range planning process, was written to review the progress in hot QCD since the 2015 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science, as well as highlight the realization of previous recommendations, and present opportunities for the next decade, building on the accomplishments and investments made in theoretical developments and the construction of new detectors. Furthermore, this document provides additional context to support the recommendations voted on at the Joint Hot and Cold QCD Town Hall Meeting, which are reported in a separate document.

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7 describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCD research.

It has been shown that a hot and dense deconfined nuclear matter state produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, can be quantitatively described by the String Percolation phenomenological model. The model address the phase transition in terms of the two-dimensional continuum percolation theory over strings, which are schematic representations of the fundamental interactions among the partons of the colliding nuclei in the initial state. In this work, we present an extension of the critical string density results including the eccentricity dependence on the initial state geometry focus on small string number with different density profile, small deviations from the different profile densities are found. The percolation threshold shows consistency with the thermodynamic limit for the uniform density profile with a large number of strings in the case of circular boundary system. A significant dependence on the eccentricity for a small number of strings compared to high occupancy systems is exhibited, the implications may become relevant in hadron-hadron or hadron-nucleus collision systems.

We analyze high multiplicity proton-proton ($pp$) collision data in the framework of the String Percolation Model (SPM) that has been successful in describing several phenomena of multiparticle production, including the signatures of recent discovery of strongly interacting partonic matter, the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our study in terms of the ratio of shear viscosity and entropy density ($η/s$) and the (LQCD) predicted signature of QCD change of phase, in terms of effective number of degrees of freedom ($ε/T^4$), reiterates the possibility of strongly interacting collective medium in these events.

Abstract:
We use multiple scattering and energy conservation arguments to describe $dn/dη_{NANA}$ as a function of $dn/dη_{pp}$ in the framework of string percolation. We discuss the pseudo-rapidity $η$? and beam rapidity Y dependence of particle densities. We present our results for pp, Au- Au, and Pb-Pb collisions at RHIC and LHC.

The observed different growths are a result of energy- momentum constraints that limit the number of formed strings at low en- ergy. Based on the very good description of the existing data, we provide predictions for future high energy LHC runs.

We discuss the rapidity long range correlations and its relation to the height and longitudinal extension of the ridge structure. Finally we show that the dependence of the shear viscosity over entropy density ratio on the temperature, presents a minimum close to the critical temperature remaining small in the range of the RHIC and LHC energies.

Abstract:
We study the evolution of the particle density, dn/dηat fixed ηwith the beam rapidity Y in the framework of string percolation model. Our main results are: (i) The width of the "plateau" increases proportionally to Y, (ii) limiting fragmentation is violated, and (iii) the particle density, reduces to a step function.
