High repetition rate gas targets constitute an essential component in intense laser matter interaction studies. The technology becomes challenging as the repetition rate approaches kHz regime. In this regime, cantilever based gas valves are employed, which can open and close in tens of microseconds, resulting in a unique kind of gas characteristics in both spatial and temporal domain. Here we characterize piezo cantilever based kHz pulsed gas valves in the low density regime, where it provides sufficient peak gas density for High Harmonic Generation while releasing significantly less amount of gas reducing the vacuum load within the interaction chamber, suitable for high vacuum applications. In order to obtain reliable information of the gas density in the target jet space-time resolved characterization is performed. The gas jet system is validated by conducting interferometric gas density estimations and high harmonic generation measurements at the Extreme Light Infrastructure Attosecond Light Pulse Source (ELI ALPS) facility. Our results demonstrate that while employing such targets for optimal high harmonic generation, the high intensity interaction should be confined to a suitable time window, after the cantilever opening. The measured gas density evolution correlates well with the integrated high harmonic flux and state of the art 3D simulation results, establishing the importance of such metrology.

Photo-ionization induced ultrafast electron dynamics is considered as a precursor to the slower nuclear dynamics associated with molecular dissociation. Here, using ab initio multielectron wave-packet propagation method, we study the overall many-electron dynamics, triggered by the ionization of outer-valence orbitals of different tautomers of a prototype molecule with more than one symmetry element. From the time evolution of the initially created averaged hole density of each system, we identify distinctly different charge dynamics response in the tautomers. We observe that keto form shows charge migration direction away from the nitrogen bonded with tautomeric hydrogen, while in enol - away from oxygen bonded to tautomeric hydrogen. Additionally, the dynamics following ionization of molecular orbitals of different symmetry reveal that a' orbitals show fast and highly delocalized charge in comparison to a" symmetry. These observations indicate why different tautomers respond differently to an XUV ionization, and might explain the subsequent different fragmentation pathways. An experimental schematics allowing detection and reconstruction of such charge dynamics is also proposed. Although the present study uses a simple, prototypical bio-relevant molecule, it reveals the explicit role of molecular symmetry and tautomerism in the ionization-triggered charge migration that controls many ultrafast physical, chemical, and biological processes, making tautomeric forms a promising tool of molecular design for desired charge migration.

Abstract:
We present transient absorption spectra of an extreme ultraviolet attosecond pulse train in helium dressed by an 800 nm laser field with intensity ranging from $2\times10^{12}$ W/cm$^2$ to $2\times10^{14}$ W/cm$^2$. The energy range probed spans 16-42 eV, straddling the first ionisation energy of helium (24.59 eV). By changing the relative polarisation of the dressing field with respect to the att…

By changing the relative polarisation of the dressing field with respect to the attosecond pulse train polarisation we observe a large change in the modulation of the absorption reflecting the vectorial response to the dressing field. With parallel polarized dressing and probing fields, we observe significant modulations with periods of one half and one quarter of the dressing field period. With perpendicularly polarized dressing and probing fields, the modulations of the harmonics above the ionisation threshold are significantly suppressed. A full-dimensionality solution of the single-atom time-dependent Schrödinger equation obtained using the recently developed ab-initio time-dependent B-spline ADC method reproduce some of our observations.

We investigate how short and long electron trajectory contributions to high harmonic emission and their interferences give access to intra-molecular dynamics. In the case of unaligned molecules, we show experimental evidences that the long trajectory signature is more dependent upon the molecule than the short one, providing a high sensitivity to cation nuclear dynamics within 100's of as to few fs. Using theoretical approaches based on Strong Field Approximation and Time Dependent Schrodinger Equation, we examine how quantum path interferences encode electronic motion whilst molecules are aligned. We show that the interferences are dependent on channels superposition and upon which ionisation channel is involved. In particular, quantum path interferences encodes electronic migration signature while coupling between channels is allowed by the laser field. Hence, molecular quantum path interferences is a promising method for Attosecond Spectroscopy, allowing the resolution of ultra-fast charge migration in molecules after ionisation in a self-referenced manner.
