Photonics has been revolutionized by breakthroughs in optical metasurfaces and layered two-dimensional materials. Yet, integrating these two fields in a singular system has remained challenging. Here, we introduce the concept of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure metasurfaces, where ultrathin multilayer vdW material stacks are shaped into precisely engineered resonant nanostructures for boosting light-matter interactions. By leveraging quasi-bound states in the continuum to create intrinsic cavities from WS$_2$ monolayers encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride, we observe room-temperature strong coupling and polaritonic luminescence, which further unveils a saturation of the strong-coupling regime at ultralow fluences <1 nJ/cm2, more than three orders of magnitude smaller than in previous 2D-cavity systems. Our approach, seamlessly merging metasurfaces and vdW materials, unlocks new avenues for ultrathin optical devices with atomic-scale precision and control.

We present a novel procedure for manipulating the near-field of plasmonic nanoantennas using neural network-controlled laser pulse-shaping. As model systems we numerically studied the spatial distribution of the second harmonic response of L-shaped nanoantennas illuminated by broadband laser pulses. We first show that a trained neural network can be used to predict the relative intensity of the second-harmonic hotspots of the nanoantenna for a given spectral phase and that it can be employed to deterministically switch individual hotspots on and off on sub-diffraction length scale by shaping the spectral phase of the laser pulse. We then demonstrate that a neural network trained on a $90~\mathrm{nm} \times 150~\mathrm{nm}$ nano-L can in addition efficiently predict the hotspot intensities in an antenna with different aspect ratio after minimal further training for varying spectral phases. These results could lead to novel applications of machine-learning and optical control to nanoantennas and nanophotonics components.

Delivering femtosecond laser light in the focal plane of a high numerical aperture microscope objective is still a challenge, despite significant developments in the generation of ultrashort pulses. One of the most popular techniques, used to correct phase distortions resulting from propagation through transparent media, is the multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS). The accuracy of MIIPS however is limited when higher order phase distortions are present. Here we introduce an improvement, called Gated-MIIPS, which avoids shortcomings of MIIPS, reduces the influence of higher order phase terms, and can be used to more efficiently compress broad band laser pulses even with a simple 4f pulse shaper setup. In this work we present analytical formulas for MIIPS and Gated-MIIPS valid for chirped Gaussian pulses; we show an approximated analytic expression for Gated-MIIPS valid for arbitrary pulse shapes; finally we demonstrate the increased accuracy of Gated-MIIPS via experiment and numerical simulation.
