We present R-matrix calculations of photoionization of molecular monomers and dimers, focusing on ammonia (NH3) and formic acid (HCOOH), utilizing configuration-interaction models including the Occupation-Restricted Multiple Active Space (ORMAS) approach. We show that ORMAS is a highly efficient choice for calculating photoionization observables, yielding results that are in excellent agreement with those obtained using the much more demanding configuration-interaction method, Complete Active Space (CAS). We demonstrate that models incorporating single and double (SD) excitations with respect to the Hartree-Fock configuration provide good agreement with experimental data. The approach developed here can be readily applied to study photoionization in complex molecular systems.

The codes are freely available as a tarball from Zenodo.

The photoionization of chiral molecules prepared in a coherent superposition of excited states can give access to the underlying chiral coherent dynamics in a procedure known as photoexcitation induced photoelectron circular dichroism (PXECD). The photoionization of chiral molecules prepared in a coherent superposition of excited states can give access to the underlying chiral coherent dynamics in a procedure known as photoexcitation induced photoelectron circular dichroism (PXECD). This exclusive dependence on coherence can also be seen in a different part of the angular spectrum, where it is not contingent on the chirality of the molecule, thus allowing extension of PXECD's sensitivity to tracking coherence to non-chiral molecules. Here we present a general theory of PXECD based on angular momentum algebra and derive explicit expressions for all pertinent asymmetry parameters which arise for arbitrary polarisation of pump and probe pulses. The theory is developed in a way that clearly and simply separates chiral and non-chiral contributions to the photoelectron angular distribution, and also demonstrates how PXECD and PECD-type contributions, which may be distinguished by whether pump or ionizing probe enables chiral response, are mixed when arbitrary polarization is used.

Chirality is ubiquitous in nature and fundamental in science, from particle physics to metamaterials. The most established technique of chiral discrimination - photoabsorption circular dichroism - relies on the magnetic properties of a chiral medium and yields an extremely weak chiral response. We propose and demonstrate a new, orders of magnitude more sensitive type of circular dichroism in neutral molecules: photoexitation circular dichroism. It does not rely on weak magnetic effects, but takes advantage of the coherent helical motion of bound electrons excited by ultrashort circularly polarized light. It results in an ultrafast chiral response and the efficient excitation of a macroscopic chiral density in an initially isotropic ensemble of randomly oriented chiral molecules. We probe this excitation without the aid of further chiral interactions using linearly polarized laser pulses. Our time-resolved study of vibronic chiral dynamics opens a way to the efficient initiation, control and monitoring of chiral chemical change in neutral molecules at the level of electrons.

We illustrate our approach using CO$_2$ as an example, and analyze the importance of multi-channel effects by performing our calculations at different, increasing levels of complexity. We benchmark our method by comparing the results of our calculations with experimental data and with theoretical calculations available in the literature.

These include photoionization, photorecombination and photodetachment; electron-molecule scattering and photon-induced processes in the presence of an external D.C. field, and time-dependent R-matrix approaches to study the effect of the exposure of molecules to strong laser fields. We present a new algorithm, implemented as a module (CDENPROP) in the UKRmol electron-molecule scattering code suite.
