Recent works have demonstrated that the optical excitation of crystalline materials with intense narrow-band infrared pulses, tailored to match the frequencies at which the crystal's permittivity approaches close to zero, can drive a permanent reversal of magnetic and ferroelectric ordering. However, the physical mechanism that microscopically underpins this effect remains unclear, as well as the precise role of laser-induced heating and macroscopic strains. Here, we explore how infrared pulses can simultaneously give rise to strong temperature-dependent birefringence and strain in ferroelectric barium titanate. We develop a model of these two coexisting effects, allowing us to use polarization microscopy to disentangle them through their spatial distributions, temporal evolutions and spectral dependencies. We experimentally observe strain-induced patterns that are an order of magnitude larger than that which can be accounted for by laser-induced heating alone, suggesting that non-thermal effects must also play a role. Our results reveal the distinct fingerprints of heat- and strain-induced birefringence, shedding new light on the process of all-optical switching of order parameters in the epsilon-near-zero regime.

Strong light-matter interaction constitutes the bedrock of all photonic applications, empowering material elements with the ability to create and mediate interactions of light with light. Amidst the quest to identify new agents facilitating such efficient light-matter interactions, a class of promising materials have emerged featuring highly unusual properties deriving from their dielectric constant ε being equal, or at least very close, to zero. Works so far have shown that the enhanced nonlinear optical effects displayed in this 'epsilon-near-zero' (ENZ) regime makes it possible to create ultrafast albeit transient optical switches. An outstanding question, however, relates to whether one could use the amplification of light-matter interactions at the ENZ conditions to achieve permanent switching. Here, we demonstrate that an ultrafast excitation under ENZ conditions can induce permanent all-optical reversal of ferroelectric polarization between different stable states. Our reliance on ENZ conditions that naturally emerge from the solid's ionic lattice, rather than specific material properties, suggests that the demonstrated mechanism of reversal is truly universal, being capable of permanently switching order parameters in a wide variety of systems.

Computer-generated holograms with their animated, three-dimensional appearance have long appealed to our imagination as the path towards truly immersive displays with bi-directional natural parallax. Impressive progress in updateable 3-D imagery has been achieved with liquid crystal modulators and high-resolution, but quasi-static holograms are being recorded in photosensitive materials. However, the memory requirements and computational loads of real-time, large-area holography will be hard to tackle for several decades to come with the current paradigm based on a matrix calculations and bit-plane writing. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a conceptually novel, holistic approach to serial computation and repeatable writing of computer-generated dynamic holograms without Fourier transform, using minimal amounts of computer memory. We use the ultrafast opto-magnetic recording of holographic patterns in a ferrimagnetic film with femtosecond laser pulses, driven by on-the-fly hardware computation of a single holographic point. The intensity-threshold nature of the magnetic medium allows sub-diffraction-limited, point-by-point toggling of arbitrarily localized magnetic spots on the sample, according to the proposed circular detour-phase encoding, providing complex modulation and symmetrical suppression of upper diffractive orders and conjugated terms in holographically reconstructed 3-D images.

The quest to improve density, speed and energy efficiency of magnetic memory storage has led to exploration of new ways of optically manipulating magnetism at the ultrafast time scale, in particular in ferrimagnetic alloys. While all-optical magnetization switching is well-established on the femtosecond timescale, lateral nanoscale confinement and thus potential significant reduction of the size of the magnetic element remains an outstanding challenge. Here we employ resonant electromagnetic energy-funneling plasmon nanoantennas to influence the demagnetization dynamics of a ferrimagnetic TbCo alloy thin film. We demonstrate how Ag nanoring-shaped antennas under resonant optical femtosecond pumping reduce the overall magneto-optical response due to demagnetization in the underlying films up to three times compared to non-resonant illumination. We attribute such substantial reduction to the nanoscale confinement of the demagnetization process. This is qualitatively supported by the electromagnetic simulations that strongly evidence the optical energy-funneling to the nanoscale from the nanoantennas into the ferrimagnetic film. This is the first and defining step for reaching deterministic ultrafast all-optical magnetization switching at the nanoscale in such systems, opening a route to develop nanoscale ultrafast magneto-optics.

Since the first experimental observation of all-optical switching phenomena, intensive research has been focused on finding suitable magnetic systems that can be integrated as storage elements within spintronic devices and whose magnetization can be controlled through ultra-short single laser pulses. We report here atomistic spin simulations of all-optical switching in multilayered structures alternating n monolayers of Tb and m monolayers of Co. By using a two temperature model, we numerically calculate the thermal variation of the magnetization of each sublattice as well as the magnetization dynamics of [Tbn/Com] multilayers upon incidence of a single laser pulse. In particular, the condition to observe thermally-induced magnetization switching is investigated upon varying systematically both the composition of the sample (n,m) and the laser fluence. The samples with one monolayer of Tb as [Tb1/Co2] and [Tb1/Co3] are showing thermally induced magnetization switching above a fluence threshold. The reversal mechanism is mediated by the residual magnetization of the Tb lattice while the Co is fully demagnetized in agreement with the models developed for ferrimagnetic alloys. The switching is however not fully deterministic but the error rate can be tuned by the damping parameter. Increasing the number of monolayers the switching becomes completely stochastic. The intermixing at the Tb/Co interfaces appears to be a promising way to reduce the stochasticity. These results predict for the first time the possibility of TIMS in [Tb/Co] multilayers and suggest the occurrence of sub-picosecond magnetization reversal using single laser pulses.

A concept of an electrically tunable resonance detector of THz-frequency signals based on antiferromagnetic/heavy metal (AFM/HM) hetero-structure is proposed. The conversion of a THz-frequency input signal into DC voltage is done using the inverse spin Hall effect in an (AFM/HM) bilayer. An additional bias DC current in the HM layer can be used to vary the effective anisotropy of the AFM, and, therefore, to tune the AFMR frequency. The proposed AFM/HM hetero-structure works as a resonance-type quadratic detector which can be tuned by the bias current in the range of at least 10 percent of the AFMR frequency and our estimations show that the sensitivity of this detector could be comparable to that of modern detectors based on the Schottky, Gunn or graphene-based diodes.

Metallic nanostructures exhibit strong nonlinear-optical response at surface plasmon resonances, where the light-matter coupling efficiency is enhanced. An active modulation of this response can be realized by means of an external magnetic field. Here we utilize a nonlinear magneto-refractive effect in spintronic multilayer antennas to achieve a resonant 20\% modulation in second harmonic generation (SHG) in the mid-infrared. We discuss mechanisms of this modulation and show that it cannot be explained by an unequal enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the two spin states of the multilayer. Instead, we propose a novel contribution to the nonlinear susceptibility, which relies on the spin-dependent electron mean free path in metals. In contrast to magneto-optics in ferromagnets, our approach results in no shift of the resonance and thus ensures that the largest SHG and its strongest modulation are simultaneously observed.

Varying the Tb:Co ratio in these alloys allows for tuning properties such as the saturation magnetic moment, coercive field and the performance of the light-induced magnetization switching. In this work, we investigate the magnetic, optical and magneto-optical properties of various Tb$_{x}$Co$_{100-x}$ thin film alloy compositions. We report on the effect the choice of different seeding layers has on the structural and magnetic properties of Tb$_{x}$Co$_{100-x}$ layers. We also demonstrate that for a range of alloys, deposited on fused silica substrates, with Tb content of 24-30 at.$\%$, helicity dependent all-optical switching of magnetization can be achieved, albeit in a multi-shot framework. We explain this property to arise from the helicity-dependent laser induced magnetization on the Co sublattice due to the inverse Faraday effect. Our study provides an insight into material aspects for future potential hybrid magneto-plasmonic TbCo-based architectures.

All-optical helicity dependent switching (AO-HDS), deterministic control of magnetization by circularly polarized laser pulses, allows to efficiently manipulate spins without the need of a magnetic field. However, AO-HDS in ferromagnetic metals so far requires many laser pulses for fully switching their magnetic states. Using a combination of a short, 90-fs linearly polarized pulse and a subsequent longer, 3-ps circularly polarized pulse, we demonstrate that the number of pulses for full magnetization reversal can be reduced to 4 pulse pairs in a single stack of Pt/Co/Pt. The obtained results suggest that the dual-pulse approach is a potential route towards realizing efficient AO-HDS in ferromagnetic metals.

In this work we use magnetic deflection of V, Nb, and Ta atomic clusters to measure their magnetic moments. While only a few of the clusters show weak magnetism, all odd-numbered clusters deflect due to the presence of a single unpaired electron. Surprisingly, for majority of V and Nb clusters an atomic-like behavior is found, which is a direct indication of the absence of spin-lattice interaction. This is in agreement with Kramers degeneracy theorem for systems with a half-integer spin. This purely quantum phenomenon is surprisingly observed for large systems of more than 20 atoms, and also indicates various quantum relaxation processes, via Raman two-phonon and Orbach high-spin mechanisms. In heavier, Ta clusters, the relaxation is always present, probably due to larger masses and thus lower phonon energies, as well as increased spin-orbit coupling.

Time-resolved imaging reveals that the helicity dependent all-optical switching (HD-AOS) of Co/Pt ferromagnetic multilayers proceeds by two stages. First one involves the helicity independent and stochastic nucleation of reversed magnetic domains. At the second stage circularly polarized light breaks the degeneracy between the magnetic domains and promotes the preferred direction of domain wall (DW) motion. The growth of the reversed domain from the nucleation cite, for a particular helicity, leads to full magnetic reversal. This study demonstrates a novel mechanism of HD-AOS mediated by the deterministic displacement of DWs.

Recent experiments on isolated Co clusters have shown huge orbital magnetic moments in comparison with their bulk and surface counterparts. These clusters hence provide the unique possibility to study the evolution of the orbital magnetic moment with respect to the cluster size and how competing interactions contribute to the quenching of orbital magnetism. We investigate here different theoretical methods to calculate the spin and orbital moments of Co clusters, and assess the performances of the methods in comparison with experiments. It is shown that density functional theory in conventional local density or generalized gradient approximations, or even with a hybrid functional, severely underestimates the orbital moment. As natural extensions/corrections we considered the orbital polarization correction, the LDA+U approximation as well as the LDA+DMFT method. Our theory shows that of the considered methods, only the LDA+DMFT method provides orbital moments in agreement with experiment, thus emphasizing the importance of dynamic correlations effects for determining fundamental magnetic properties of magnets in the nano-size regime.

Here we follow, both experimentally and theoretically, the development of magnetism in Tb clusters from the atomic limit, adding one atom at a time. The exchange interaction is, surprisingly, observed to drastically increase compared to that of bulk, and to exhibit irregular oscillations as a function of the interatomic distance. From electronic structure theory we find that the theoretical magnetic moments oscillate with cluster size in exact agreement with experimental data. Unlike the bulk, the oscillation is not caused by the RKKY mechanism. Instead, the inter-atomic exchange is shown to be driven by a competition between wave-function overlap of the 5d shell and the on-site exchange interaction, which leads to a competition between ferromagnetic double-exchange and antiferromagnetic super-exchange. This understanding opens up new ways to tune the magnetic properties of rare-earth based magnets with nano-sized building blocks.

The rare-earths are known to have intriguing changes of the valence, depending on chemical surrounding or geometry. Here we make predictions from theory that combines density functional theory with atomic multiplet-theory, on the transition of valence when transferring from the atomic divalent limit to the trivalent bulk, passing through different sized clusters, of selected rare-earths. We predict that Tm clusters show an abrupt change from pure divalent to pure trivalent at a size of 6 atoms, while Sm and Tb clusters are respectively pure divalent and trivalent up to 8 atoms. Larger Sm clusters are argued to likely make a transition to a mixed valent, or trivalent, configuration. The valence of all rare-earth clusters, as a function of size, is predicted from interpolation of our calculated results. We argue that the here predicted behavior is best analyzed by spectroscopic measurements, and provide theoretical spectra, based on dynamical mean field theory, in the Hubbard-I approximation, to ease experimental analysis.

We investigate the mechanisms of magnetic second harmonic generation in hybrid gold-cobalt-silver multilayer structures, which support propagating surface plasmon polaritons at both fundamental and second harmonic frequencies. Using magneto-optical spectroscopy in Kretschmann geometry, we show that the huge magneto-optical modulation of the second harmonic intensity is dominated by the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons at the second harmonic frequency, as shown by tuning the optical wavelength over the spectral region of strong plasmonic dispersion. Our proof-of-principle experiment highlights bright prospects of nonlinear magneto-plasmonics and contributes to the general understanding of the nonlinear optics of magnetic surfaces and interfaces.

This is particularly strongly manifested in small clusters, where a vast number of unusual structures appear. Here, we employ density functional theory in combination with a genetic search algorithm, GGA$+U$ and a hybrid functional to determine the structure of gas phase Fe$_{x}$O$_{y}^{+/0}$ clusters. For Fe$_{x}$O$_{y}$ cation clusters we also calculate the corresponding vibration spectra and compare them with experiments. We successfully identify Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}^{+}$, Fe$_{4}$O$_{5}^{+}$, Fe$_{4}$O$_{6}^{+}$, Fe$_{5}$O$_{7}^{+}$ and propose structures for Fe$_{6}$O$_{8}^{+}$. Within the triangular geometric structure of Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}^{+}$ a non-collinear, ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic state are comparable in energy. Fe$_{4}$O$_{5}^{+}$ and Fe$_{4}$O$_{6}^{+}$ are ferrimagnetic with a residual magnetic moment of 1~\muB{} due to ionization. Fe$_{5}$O$_{7}^{+}$ is ferrimagnetic due to the odd number of Fe atoms. We compare the electronic structure with bulk magnetite and find Fe$_{4}$O$_{5}^{+}$, Fe$_{4}$O$_{6}^{+}$, Fe$_{6}$O$_{8}^{+}$ to be mixed valence clusters. All-optical switching (AOS) of magnetic domains by femtosecond laser pulses was first observed in the transition metal-rare earth (TM-RE) alloy GdFeCo1-5; this phenomenon demonstrated the potential for optical control of magnetism for the development of ever faster future magnetic recording technologies. The technological potential of AOS has recently increased due to the discovery of the same effect in other materials, including RE-free magnetic multilayers6,7. However, to be technologically meaningful, AOS must compete with the bit densities of conventional storage devices, restricting optically-switched magnetic areas to sizes well below the diffraction limit. Here, we demonstrate reproducible and robust all-optical switching of magnetic domains of 53 nm size in a ferrimagnetic TbFeCo alloy using gold plasmonic antenna structures. The confined nanoscale magnetic reversal is imaged around and beneath plasmonic antennas using x-ray resonant holographic imaging. We analyse the unreduced, nonperturbative dynamics of an arbitrary many-body interaction process with the help of the generalised effective potential method and reveal the well-specified universal origin of change (emergence), time and evolution in an a priori conservative, time-independent system. It appears together with the universal dynamic complexity definition, where this unified complexity conservation and transformation constitutes the essence of evolution. We then consider the detailed structure of this universal evolutionary process showing its step-wise, "punctuated" character, now provided with the exact mathematical description. Comparing the expected features of a revolutionary complexity transition near a step-like complexity upgrade with the currently observed behaviour of world's social and economic systems, we prove the necessity of complexity revolution towards the superior civilisation level of well-defined nature, the only alternative being an equally dramatic and irreversible degradation, irrespective of efforts applied to stop the crisis at the current totally saturated complexity level.

Density functional theory calculations using a 4f-in-core effective core potential (ECP) accurately reproduce the experimental far-IR spectra. The ECP corresponds to a 4f85d16s2 trivalent configuration of terbium. The assigned structures are similar to those observed in several other transition metal systems. From this, we conclude that the bonding in Tb clusters is through the interactions between the 5d and 6s electrons, and that the 4f electrons have only an indirect effect on the cluster structures.

We review the recently proposed unreduced, complex-dynamical solution to the many-body problem with arbitrary interaction and its application to the unified solution of fundamental problems, including dynamic foundations of causally complete quantum mechanics, relativity, particle properties and cosmology. We first analyse the universal properties of this many-body problem solution without any perturbative reduction and show that the emerging new quality of fundamental dynamic multivaluedness (or redundance) of the resulting system configuration leads to the natural and universal concept of dynamic complexity, chaoticity and fractality of any real system behaviour. We then consider unified features of this complex dynamics. Applications of that universal description to systems at various complexity levels have been performed and in this paper we review those at the lowest, fundamental complexity levels leading to causal understanding of the unified origin of quantum mechanics, relativity (special and general), elementary particles, their intrinsic properties and interactions. One reveals, in particular, the complex-dynamic origin of inertial and gravitational (relativistic) mass without introduction of any additional particle species, fields or dimensions. Other practically important consequences and problem solutions in fundamental physics and cosmology are summarised, confirming the efficiency of that unified picture.

Globalised-civilisation interaction intensity grows exponentially, involving all dimensions and regions of planetary environment. The resulting dynamics of critically high, exploding complexity urgently needs consistent understanding and efficient management. The new, provably universal concept of unreduced dynamic complexity of real interaction processes described here provides the former and can be used as a basis for the latter, in the form of "complexity revolution" in information systems controlling such "critically globalised" civilisation dynamics. We outline the relevant dynamic complexity properties and the ensuing principles of anticipated complexity transition in information and communication systems. We then emphasize key applications of unreduced complexity concept and complexity-driven IT to various aspects of post-industrial civilisation dynamics, including intelligent communication, context-aware information and control systems, reliable genetics, integral medicine, emergent engineering, efficient risk management at the new level of socio-economic development and resulting realistic sustainability.

A major challenge of interdisciplinary description of complex system behaviour is whether real systems of higher complexity levels can be understood with at least the same degree of objective, "scientific" rigour and universality as "simple" systems of classical, Newtonian science paradigm. The problem is reduced to that of arbitrary, many-body interaction (unsolved in standard theory). Here we review its causally complete solution, the ensuing concept of complexity and applications. The discovered key properties of dynamic multivaluedness and entanglement give rise to a qualitatively new kind of mathematical structure providing the exact version of real system behaviour. The extended mathematics of complexity contains the truly universal definition of dynamic complexity, randomness (chaoticity), classification of all possible dynamic regimes, and the unifying principle of any system dynamics and evolution, the universal symmetry of complexity. Every real system has a non-zero (and actually high) value of unreduced dynamic complexity determining, in particular, "mysterious" behaviour of quantum systems and relativistic effects causally explained now as unified manifestations of complex interaction dynamics. The observed differences between various systems are due to different regimes and levels of their unreduced dynamic complexity. We outline applications of universal concept of dynamic complexity emphasising cases of "truly complex" systems from higher complexity levels (ecological and living systems, brain operation, intelligence and consciousness, autonomic information and communication systems) and show that the urgently needed progress in social and intellectual structure of civilisation inevitably involves qualitative transition to unreduced complexity understanding (we call it "revolution of complexity").

The universal symmetry, or conservation, of complexity underlies any law or principle of system dynamics and describes the unceasing transformation of dynamic information into dynamic entropy as the unique way to conserve their sum, the total dynamic complexity. Here we describe the real world structure emergence and dynamics as manifestation of the universal symmetry of complexity of initially homogeneous interaction between two protofields. It provides the unified complex-dynamic, causally complete origin of physically real, 3D space, time, elementary particles, their properties (mass, charge, spin, etc.), quantum, relativistic, and classical behaviour, as well as fundamental interaction forces, including naturally quantized gravitation. The old and new cosmological problems (including "dark" mass and energy) are basically solved for this explicitly emerging, self-tuning world structure characterised by strictly positive (and large) energy-complexity. A general relation is obtained between the numbers of world dimensions and fundamental forces, excluding plausible existence of hidden dimensions. The unified, causally explained quantum, classical, and relativistic properties (and types of behaviour) are generalised to all higher levels of complex world dynamics. The real world structure, dynamics, and evolution are exactly reproduced by the probabilistic dynamical fractal, which is obtained as the truly complete general solution of a problem and the unique structure of the new mathematics of complexity. We outline particular, problem-solving applications of always exact, but irregularly structured symmetry of unreduced dynamic complexity to microworld dynamics, including particle physics, genuine quantum chaos, real nanobiotechnology, and reliable genomics.

The unreduced interaction analysis avoiding any perturbative model gives intrinsically creative cosmology describing the real, explicitly emerging world structure with dynamic randomness at all levels. Without imposing any postulates or additional entities, we obtain physically real, three-dimensional space, irreversibly flowing time, elementary particles with their detailed structure and intrinsic properties, causally complete and unified version of quantum and relativistic behaviour, the origin and number of naturally unified fundamental forces, classical behaviour emergence in a closed system, and true quantum chaos. Major problems of standard cosmology and astrophysics are consistently solved in this extended picture, including those of quantum cosmology and gravity, entropy growth and time arrow, "hierarchy" of elementary particles (Planckian unit values), "anthropic" difficulties, Big Bang contradictions, and "missing" ("dark") mass and energy. Universal and rigorously derived concept of dynamic complexit (physics/9806002) shows that any system of interacting components, including society and civilisation, exists only as a process of highly inhomogeneous, qualitative development of its complexity. Modern state of civilisation corresponds to the end of unfolding of a big enough level of complexity. Such exhausted, totally "replete" structure cannot be sustainable in principle and shows instead increased instability, realising its inevitable replacement by a new kind of structure with either low or much higher level of complexity (degrading or progressive development branch, respectively). Unrestricted sustainability can emerge only after transition to the next, superior level of civilisation complexity, which implies qualitative and unified changes in all aspects of life, including knowledge, production, social organisation, and infrastructure. These changes are specified by the rigorous analysis of underlying interaction processes. The unitary, effectively one-dimensional and rigidly fixed kind of thinking, knowledge, and social structure at the current level of complexity will be replaced by "dynamically multivalued", intrinsically creative kind of structure at the forthcoming superior level of development. We propose mathematically rigorous description of unreduced civilisation complexity development, including universal criterion of progress. One obtains thus a working basis for the causally complete, objectively exact and reliable development science and futurology.

A system of two initially homogeneous, physically real fields uniformly attracted to each other is considered as the simplest basis of the self-developing world structure. It is shown that the system is unstable against periodic cycles of self-amplified, essentially nonlinear squeeze of its extended part to a small volume around randomly chosen centre, followed by the reverse extension. The resulting spatially random pulsation, or "quantum beat", is observed as (massive) elementary particle such as the electron. The property of mass is then universally and consistently defined as temporal rate of such dynamically chaotic and essentially nonlinear quantum beat, without introduction of any additional entities. The obtained picture can be considered as complex-dynamical completion of the "double solution" concept of Louis de Broglie. The dynamically emerging wave-particle duality, quantum discreteness, indeterminacy, space, and time lead to the equations of special relativity and quantum mechanics, providing their causal explanation and explicit unification. The elementary particle structure, its intrinsic properties, quantum and relativistic behaviour are obtained thus all together, within the unified analysis of the unreduced interaction process leading to the universal concept of dynamic complexity. The same complex-dynamical process accounts for the universal gravitation and general relativity. The electromagnetic, weak, and strong types of interaction between particles also constitute integral, dynamically unified parts of quantum beat processes inside elementary particles. The classical, dynamically localised behaviour emerges in a closed system as a higher complexity level corresponding to formation of elementary bound systems (like atoms).

A quite general interaction process of a multi-component system is analysed by the extended effective potential method liberated from usual limitations of perturbation theory or integrable model. The obtained causally complete solution of the many-body problem reveals the phenomenon of dynamic multivaluedness, or redundance, of emerging, incompatible system realisations and dynamic entanglement of system components within each realisation. The ensuing concept of dynamic complexity (and related intrinsic chaoticity) is absolutely universal and can be applied to the problem of (natural and artificial) intelligence and consciousness that dynamically emerge now as a high enough, properly specified levels of unreduced complexity of a suitable interaction process. Emergent consciousness can be identified with the appearance of bound, permanently localised states in the multivalued brain dynamics from strongly chaotic states of unconscious intelligence, by analogy with classical behaviour emergence from quantum states at the lowest levels of complex world dynamics. We show that the main properties of this dynamically emerging consciousness (and intelligence, at the preceding complexity level) correspond to empirically derived properties of natural consciousness and obtain causally substantiated conclusions about their artificial realisation, including the fundamentally justified paradigm of genuine machine consciousness. This rigorously defined machine consciousness is different from both natural consciousness and any mechanistic, dynamically single-valued imitation of the latter. We use then the same, truly universal concept of complexity to derive equally rigorous conclusions about mental and social implications of this complex-dynamic consciousness concept, demonstrating its critical importance for further progress of science and civilisation.

The unreduced, universally nonperturbative analysis of arbitrary many-body interaction process reveals the irreducible, purely dynamic source of randomness. It leads to the universal definition of real system complexity (physics/9806002), where the internally chaotic self-organisation emerges as a limiting case of complex interaction dynamics (physics/0211071). It extends also the concept of "self-organised criticality" and corresponds to formation of distinct enough (but always internally chaotic) structures occurring if the system is far from characteristic frequency resonances. Transition to the opposite limiting regime of multivalued interaction dynamics, that of uniform (global) chaos, takes place around the main frequency resonance(s), which provides the absolutely universal criterion of global chaos onset, applicable to any kind of system, as well as the new, extended interpretation of the phenomenon of resonance itself. As a result, one obtains the causally complete description of world structure emergence and dynamics, from elementary particles to consciousness, including practically important and fundamentally substantiated propositions for self-organisation research and applications.

The unreduced, universally nonperturbative analysis of arbitrary interaction process, described by a quite general equation, provides the truly complete, "dynamically multivalued" general solution that leads to dynamically derived, universal definitions of randomness, probability, chaoticity, complexity, fractality, self-organisation, and other properties, extending their axiomatic introduction in the conventional, dynamically single-valued (unitary) theory (physics/9806002, physics/0211071). Any real system emergence, structure, and behaviour can be expressed now by the universal law of conservation, or symmetry, of complexity that unifies extended versions of any (correct) symmetry, law, or "principle". Both the observed world structure and its unreduced dynamics result from that universal, unique symmetry, instead of formal imposition of separated, broken and simplified symmetries upon the existing, postulated structures in the unitary world "model". Whereas any unitary "symmetry" is regular and therefore practically always "spontaneously broken" (violated) in the real world dynamics, the universal symmetry of complexity remains always exact, but unites different, irregular, dynamically nonlinear, and intrinsically unstable patterns of unreduced world structure. It also provides the rigorous, dynamically derived expression of the ``arrow of time" (generalised entropy growth law) applicable to any real, necessarily complex system, from elementary particle to the universe. Particular applications of the universal symmetry of complexity, from fundamental physics to biology and theory of consciousness, provide old mysteries solutions and new research perspectives.

This report provides a brief review of recently developed extended framework for fundamental physics, designated as Quantum Field Mechanics and including causally complete and intrinsically unified theory of explicitly emerging elementary particles, their inherent properties, quantum and relativistic behaviour, interactions and their results. Essential progress with respect to usual theory is attained due to the unreduced, nonperturbative analysis of arbitrary interaction process revealing a qualitatively new phenomenon of dynamic multivaluedness of interaction results and their dynamically entangled structure giving rise to universally defined dynamic complexity (physics/9806002) and absent in usual, always perturbative and dynamically single-valued models with the zero value of unreduced complexity (including substitutes used for "complexity", "chaoticity", "self-organisation", etc.). It is shown how the observed world structure, starting from elementary particles and their interactions, dynamically emerges from the unreduced interaction between two initially homogeneous, physically real protofields (quant-ph/9902015, quant-ph/9902016). In that way one avoids arbitrary imposition of abstract entities and unprovable postulates or "principles", let alone "mysteries", of conventional theory, which now obtain unified, consistent and realistic explanation in terms of unreduced dynamic complexity. We complete the description of fundamental world structure emergence and properties by an outline of experimental implications and resulting causally substantiated change of research strategy.

Any real interaction process produces many incompatible system versions, or realisations, giving rise to omnipresent dynamic randomness and universally defined complexity (arXiv:physics/9806002). Since quantum behaviour dynamically emerges as the lowest complexity level (arXiv:quant-ph/9902016), quantum interaction randomness can only be relatively strong, which reveals the causal origin of quantum indeterminacy (arXiv:quant-ph/9511037) and true quantum chaos (arXiv:quant-ph/9511035), but rigorously excludes the possibility of unitary quantum computation, even in an "ideal", noiseless system. Any real computation is an internally chaotic (multivalued) process of system complexity development occurring in different regimes. Unitary quantum machines, including their postulated "magic", cannot be realised as such because their dynamically single-valued scheme is incompatible with the irreducibly high dynamic randomness at quantum complexity levels and should be replaced by explicitly chaotic, intrinsically creative machines already realised in living organisms and providing their quite different, realistic kind of magic. The related concepts of reality-based, complex-dynamical nanotechnology, biotechnology and intelligence are outlined, together with the ensuing change in research strategy. The unreduced, dynamically multivalued solution to the many-body problem reveals the true, complex-dynamical basis of solid-state dynamics, including the origin and internal dynamics of macroscopic quantum states. The critical, "end-of-science" state of unitary knowledge and the way to positive change are causally specified within the same, universal concept of complexity.

Following Max Planck's hypothesis of quanta (quant-ph/0012069) and the matter wave idea of Louis de Broglie (quant-ph/9911107), Erwin Schroedinger proposed, at the beginning of 1926, the concept of wavefunction and wave equation for it. Though endowed with a realistic undular interpretation by its father, the wavefunction could not be considered as a real "matter wave" and has been provided with only abstract, formally probabilistic interpretation. In this paper we show how the resulting "mysteries" of usual theory are solved within the unreduced, dynamically multivalued description of the underlying, essentially nonlinear interaction process (quant-ph/9902015, quant-ph/9902016), without artificial modification of the Schroedinger equation. The latter is rigorously derived instead as universal expression of unreduced interaction complexity. Causal, totally realistic wavefunction is obtained as a dynamically probabilistic intermediate state of a simple system with interaction performing dynamically discrete transitions between its localised, incompatible "realisations" ("corpuscular" states). Causal wavefunction and Schroedinger equation are then extended to arbitrary level of world dynamics. We outline some applications of the obtained causal description, such as genuine quantum chaos (quant-ph/9511034-36) and realistic quantum devices (physics/0211071), and emphasize the basic difference of the proposed dynamically multivalued theory from dynamically single-valued imitations of causality and complexity. The causally complete wavefunction concept, representing the unified essence of unreduced (multivalued) complex dynamics, provides a clear distinctive feature of realistic science, absent in any its unitary imitation.

On 14 December 1900 Max Planck first formulated the idea of energy quanta related to a new universal constant now known as Planck's constant. Despite the following progress of thus initiated "quantum mechanics", the physical origin of both quantization and universality of Planck's constant remains mysterious, as well as other "peculiar" properties of quantum dynamics. In this paper we review a recent causal extension of quantum mechanics consistently explaining all its "mysteries" by irreducibly complex, "dynamically multivalued" behaviour of the underlying system of two interacting protofields (quant-ph/9902015, quant-ph/9902016). The theory contains no imposed postulates or entities except one, unavoidable assumption about the physical nature of the protofields. All the observed entities and their properties, starting from physically real space, time, and elementary particle structure, are consistently derived, in exact correspondence with their emergence in real, irreducibly complex system dynamics. The latter provides also natural (dynamic) unification of the causally extended versions of quantum mechanics, relativity, and field theory, including unification and causal understanding of particle interaction forces. Realism and wholeness of the obtained world picture are in agreement with the "absolute reality" quest of Max Planck and confirm his famous doubts about the conventional scheme of quantum mechanics (cf. quant-ph/9911107, quant-ph/0101129). We describe various applications of the obtained results providing successful solution to many fundamental and practical problems dangerously stagnating within conventional approaches.

75 Years of Matter Wave: Louis de Broglie and Renaissance of the Causally Complete Knowledge

A physically real wave associated with any moving particle and travelling in a surrounding material medium was introduced by Louis de Broglie in a series of short notes in 1923 and in a more complete form in his thesis defended in Paris on the 25th November 1924. This result, recognised by the Nobel Prize in 1929, gave rise to a major direction of "new physics" known today as "quantum mechanics". However, although such notions as "de Broglie wavelength" and "wave-particle duality" form the basis of the standard quantum theory, it actually only takes for granted (postulates) the formula for the particle wavelength and totally ignores the underlying causal, realistic and physically transparent picture of wave-particle dynamics outlined by Louis de Broglie in his thesis and further considerably developed in his later works, in the form of "double solution" and "hidden thermodynamics" theory. A price to pay for such rough deviation from the original de Broglian realism and consistency involves fundamental physics domination by purely abstract and mechanistically simplified schemes of formal symbols and rules that have led to a deep knowledge impasse justly described as "the end of science". However, a new, independent approach of "quantum field mechanics" (quant-ph/9902015, quant-ph/9902016, physics/0401164) created within the "universal science of complexity" (physics/9806002) provides many-sided confirmation and natural completion of de Broglie's "nonlinear wave mechanics", eliminating all its "difficult points" and reconstituting the causally complete, totally consistent and intrinsically unified picture of the real, complex micro-world dynamics directly extendible to all higher levels of unreduced world complexity.

The fundamental impasses and ruptures in various domains of the canonical, unitary science, or the 'end of science', become the more and more evident. The natural unity of being is recovered within a universal nonperturbative method leading to the dynamic redundance paradigm. It is shown that the unreduced behaviour of any nontrivial (isolated) system includes many equally real, but incompatible dynamic regimes, each of them being roughly equivalent to an ordinary 'complete' solution of the unitary science. Therefore the regimes should 'spontaneously' and randomly replace one another, which provides a universal, purely dynamic origin of randomness. The discovered dynamic redundance leads to the universal, reality-based concept of dynamic complexity and its permanently developing hierarchical structure, alias the world. Its lowest levels give the causally complete mechanics of dynamically quantized elementary fields, extending the double solution found by Louis de Broglie. One obtains a physically complete solution for the 'mysteries' of quantum mechanics, unifyng it with the extended, causal versions of relativity (emergent space and time), quantum and classical gravity (dynamical mass), field theory (electric charge and spin), particle physics, and cosmology. The same key features of the unreduced dynamic complexity determine behaviour of any system at higher levels of complexity described by a case of the single, universal equation in its two related versions, the extended Lagrange-Hamilton (trajectorial) and Schroedinger (distributional) equations. The end of the unitary science opens the renaissance of the ultimately complete and universal understanding initiated by Rene Descartes (but then mechanistically falsified), which is confirmed by many sound, practically important results.
