Abstract:
We describe Ti:Sapphire pumped optical parametric amplification of carrier-envelope phase stabilized few-cycle ($<10$fs) mid-infrared pulses in type I $β$-barium borate. Experimental measurements show a $\times3.5$ amplification factor (from 100$μ$J to 350$μ$J) of the octave spanning spectrum ($1.1-2.4$$μ$m) using a pump beam with 2.3mJ energy, 30fs duration and central wavelength of 800nm, corres…

Numerical simulations suggest potential amplification to 4.25mJ energy and temporal compression to a pulse duration of 7.3fs is possible with a pump energy of 30mJ and duration of 30fs in a 25mm diameter, 1.5mm thick BBO crystal.

Abstract:
We report the operation of an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) capable of producing gigawatt peak-power laser pulses with tunable wavelength in either the visible or near-infrared spectrum. The OPA has two distinct operation modes (i) generation of >350 uJ, sub 100 fs pulses, tunable between 1250 - 1550 nm; (ii) generation of >190 uJ, sub 150 fs pulses tunable between 490 - 530 nm. We have recor…

We have recorded high-order harmonic spectra over a wide range of driving wavelengths. This flexible source of femtosecond pulses presents a useful tool for exploring the wavelength-dependence of strong-field phenomena, in both the multi-photon and tunnel ionization regimes.

Abstract:
This article describes an interferometric method, called "Chirped Heterodyne Interferometry for Measuring Pulses" (CHIMP), for the complete characterization of highly (monotonically) chirped ultrabroadband optical pulses. CHIMP provides the spectrally dependent group delay dispersion (GDD) of the a chirped test pulse (CTP) via a simple direct algorithm and is verified via second harmonic generatio…

Synthesised light sources need reliable diagnostics for effective application to sub-femtosecond control and probing. However, commonly employed self-referencing techniques for pulsed-field characterisation fail in the presence of wide spectral gaps, while direct sampling methods are limited to high intensities. Here, we introduce a new approach labelled SPectral-gap Immune Characterisation of Electric Fields (SPICE), which overcomes these barriers by means of multi-spectral shearing interferometry, using an unknown reference and a reconstruction algorithm that makes use of this redundant information to simultaneously reconstruct the reference and test pulse with high precision and accuracy. We envisage that this technique will help foster new applications for broadband sources.

Abstract:
This article describes a simplified reconstruction algorithm for frequency resolved optical gating (FROG) measurements of highly (monotonically) chirped pulses. The FROG traces are calculated using the stationary phase approximation, significantly reducing the data size and convergence time compared to discrete Fourier transform based methods. The waveforms of attosecond pulses produced by high-harmonic generation carry information on the electronic structure and dynamics in atomic and molecular systems. Current methods for the temporal characterization of such pulses have limited sensitivity and impose significant experimental complexity. We propose a new linear and all-optical method inspired by widely-used multi-dimensional phase retrieval algorithms. Our new scheme is based on the spectral measurement of two attosecond sources and their interference. As an example, we focus on the case of spectral polarization measurements of attosecond pulses, relying on their most fundamental property -- being well confined in time. We demonstrate this method numerically reconstructing the temporal profiles of attosecond pulses generated from aligned $CO_2$ molecules.
