Vulnerability and resilience are conceptualized through the four elements of the VUCA world. Data was collected through 35 semi-structured, psycho-social interviews, and 4 focus groups carried out between January 2020 and November 2021 with young migrants (aged 18 to 29). Participants came from two ethnic backgrounds: young migrants of Arab and Moldovan origins. Results show that much of VUCA is generated by the lack of employment opportunities and by the bureaucratic public administration. At the same time, the challenges raised by the VUCA world for migrants can be reduced through the improvement of destination language skills and through the development of social networks.

We explored the integration barriers they face, the main individual and societal aspects that lead to their resilience, and their self-perception of vulnerability, by carrying out 35 psychosocial interviews and four focus groups with young migrants (aged 18 to 29), belonging to the two different subgroups (of Arab and Moldovan origins, respectively). The comparative analysis revealed that migrants from Arab countries face harsher integration barriers compared to Moldovan migrants, they have a more severe self-perceived vulnerability, and their integration may be a longer and more complex process. Results showed that mastery of the language and the network of acquaintances play an indispensable role in inclusion. Moldovans integrate more easily than Arabs, thanks to their fluency in Romanian, the native language sh...

These include characteristics such as clarity, economy and precision; an emphasis upon rational argument supported by evidence, with an avoidance of ‘dubious' persuasive techniques; and a general restraint with regards to claims made. This contrasts sharply with the traditional scholarly discourse of the Romance cultures (Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and Romanian), which is characterised by a taste for ‘copiousness’, manifested by a wordiness and redundancy; a preference for a high-flown erudite register (including complex syntax, lexical abstraction, etc); a propensity for indirectness (the main idea is often embedded, deferred or adorned at all ranks); and the extensive use of figurative language and other forms of subjectivity. Building on Swales' genre-based approach to research writing (Swales, 2004; Feak & Swales, 2009), the study includes both methodological aspects of genre-teaching / learning and an analysis of data collected through group discussion, reflecting the views of programme participants. Fully aware that it is too early to draw comprehensive conclusions, the authors hope that by integrating various perspectives, this small-scale research will further document the genre-based approach to research writing and will contribute to refining course design

How does Erasmus+ serve young people? We conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with young people (aged between 18-29) in Luxembourg, Norway and Romania. Firstly, these young people feel that their identity changes as they internationalise and they travel more after the Erasmus+ experience. Hence, Erasmus+ is an eye opener. Secondly, employment, volunteering or training activities under Erasmus+ become a door-opener increasing young people’s chances of finding jobs. Thirdly, Erasmus+ does not end when the mobility ends: a new life style is adopted and nostalgia with the Erasmus+ leads to feeling at “home” in international environments. All these three aspects can be defined as Erasmus-isation encapsulated within a life-long perspective.

With the Romanian universities’ commitment to develop English-, French- or German-medium masters programmes, for example, there are new roles evolving for language teachers and teacher educators in the field of languages for special professional and academic purposes (LSP/ESP-EAP). There is a lot of scope for their diversifying and enriching existing competencies, as well as for transferring their expertise and methodological approaches to other domains. There is also the question of finding the best possible ways for coping with change and turning challenges into opportunities. This article comprises two Teacher Development case studies from the Romanian Higher Educati...

This does not mean, however, that high quality university education does not continue to exist and flourish in other languages, including German, French or Spanish as lingua franca. The academic context selected for analysis in this paper is an internationally accredited German MBA programme in Romania, where the dominant medium of tuition is German, with only a few courses taught in English. Academic writing is, thus, mainly in German, and the Master dissertations have to be written in German. The main aims of this small scale study are to explore the features of this multilingual environment, in terms of both challenges and opportunities involved, considering that most of the MBA-students enrolled in the programme have neither English nor German as their mother tongue. Text-based research will be complemented by the out...

After delineating the overall framework, we look into some of the disciplinary variations as reflected by the number of research publications. The main part consists in the exploration of challenges and developments related to writing for publication in English as lingua franca (ELF), as perceived by researchers in a Romanian academic community, on the one hand, and by journal editors as gatekeepers, on the other. This small-scale qualitative analysis is complemented by reference to mechanisms facilitating research writing in ELF, both within the academic environment itself and through the literacy mediation role of journal editors.

How do the youth involved in diverse mobility types deal with adverse circumstances caused by gender beliefs and gender prejudices? To answer this question, problem-centred interviews with young people (18-29) are analysed using Grounded Theory. These young people are European citizens and they are involved in five mobility types: higher education, employment, voluntary work, vocational education & training, and entrepreneurship. We apply Emirbayer and Mische’s (1998) categories (iterational, projective and practical-evaluative) to the analysis of gendered mobility narratives as unequal gender perceptions reveal themselves in the context of different types of youth mobility. The analysis allows to see the ways young people reflect on their actions: refusal of gender beliefs, acceptance or rejection of gendered prejudices, individual vs. collective solutions, demand for equ...

In a market dominated by English journals and books publications, multilingual scholars are increasingly inclined and encouraged to publish in English in order to contribute to the global dissemination of academic knowledge. Addressing the obstacles academics located outside the Anglosphere face, this collection examines the writing programs, courses and interventions held outside the Anglophone countries whose aim is to enhance the scholarly writing and publishing success of multilingual scholars.

The task of helping researchers refine their academic literacies entails new responsibilities for language professionals in university departments. This chapter will explore the new roles taken on by English for Specific Purposes (ESP) professionals in Romania within the framework of an MA program designed to enhance communication and research competences of faculty in economics and business. The methodological approach adopted in this study comprises narratives and field notes provided by ESP professionals involved in setting up and delivering the MA program. The findings suggest that responding to the needs of a demanding teaching situation and engaging in interdisciplinary interactions provide both challenges and professional development opportunities for language teaching acad...

The present study explores the strategies Romanian researchers in the field of economics and business use in the process of familiarising themselves with internationally-accepted research practices and developing their writing expertise. Survey and interview data reveal perceptions about the challenges of writing and publishing in English as well as about refining research writing practices in view of publication in scholarly journals. In addition, analysis of move structure in discussion and conclusions sections of published articles provides a useful parallel between perceived changes and actual text drafting practices. The findings show that while researchers constantly improve their own research communication skills, they expect the support and cooperation of journal reviewers and academic institutions.

Based on a survey, it also reflects the views of leading language professionals on changes in language learning interests and expectations, on how these relate to globalisation, as well as on quality-oriented institutional initiatives in response to emerging needs. The findings reveal the existence of underlying shared values among these organisations, as well as their commitment to quality assurance, despite various challenges in times of change.

In the background to all of these, however, is the question of quality. The mission of the European Centre for Modern Languages must be to contribute to better language education and the challenge of quality is in the implicit background of all the projects in the medium-term programme. In other words we need a principled way of deciding whether what we have decided to do is relevant, useful, worthwhile – asking ourselves the question “are we doing the right things?” – and at the same time creating instruments and procedures which allow us to assess whether our actions and projects are being carried out efficiently – “are we doing things right?”
