Crowdsourcing — the process of using the internet to outsource research participation to ‘workers’ — has considerable benefits, enabling research to be conducted quickly, efficiently, and responsively, diversifying participant recruitment, and allowing access to hard-to-reach samples. One of the biggest threats to this method of online data collection however is the prevalence of careless responders who can significantly affect data quality. The aims of this preregistered systematic review and meta-analysis were to: i), examine the prevalence of screening for careless responding in crowdsourced alcohol-related studies; ii), examine the pooled prevalence of careless responding; and iii) identify any potential moderators of careless responding across studies. Research has shown consistently that heavy drinkers, and those with alcohol use disorder (AUD), often experience social stigma prescribed to their alcohol use, which increases self-stigmatisation, social exclusion and reduces support seeking (Lannin et al., 2016; Maurage et al., 2012; Schomerus et al., 2010). Research indicates that AUD is one of the most stigmatised clinical disorders (Schomerus et al., 2010; Rundle et al., 2021), with the general public expressing unwillingness to work or socialise with an individual with alcohol dependence (Pescosolido et al., 2010). Perhaps most strikingly, primary care providers have also been found to hold negative attitudes of patients with AUD, thus impacting the successful provision of treatment (Andréasson et al., 2013).
