An increase in lipid peroxidation products and a decrease in antioxidant activity in preeclamptic women have been reported in many papers. The objective of this study was to evaluate oxidative stress in infants born to preeclamptic mothers. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were measured in cord plasma of infants born to preeclamptic (n = 18) or normotensive (n = 9) mothers. Gestational age was similar in both groups. The mean birth weight was significantly lower in the preeclamptic group (P = 0.007). Maternal age, primigravidity, antenatal steroid use, premature rupture of the membranes, clinical chorioamnionitis and adverse neonatal outcomes including sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome and neonatal mortality did not differ between groups. Cesarean delivery was significantly higher in the preeclamptic group. There was no significant difference in cord plasma levels of MDA and GSH, and activity of GPx between the preeclamptic and control groups. SOD was found to be increased in preeclamptic group (P = 0.03). We concluded that although cord plasma MDA levels were similar in both the preeclamptic and control groups, increased SOD activity might be an indicator of increased oxidative stress in infants born to preeclamptic mothers.

In a recent study, it has been demonstrated that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) has an anti-apoptotic effect and thus can reduce the adhesion of calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals to renal epithelial cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the HGF serum levels and its two gene polymorphisms and possible association of the two in patients with nephrolithiasis. One hundred and five patients with nephrolithiasis and 70 healthy volunteers with similar demographic features were included in this study. Serum HGF levels were measured, and HGF intron 13 C>A (in 102 stone patients and 68 healthy subjects) and intron 14 T>C (in 99 stone patients and 56 healthy subjects) polymorphisms were determined using real-time polymerase chain reaction with TaqMan allelic discrimination method. There were no statistically significant differences in HGF intron 13 C>A and intron 14 T>C polymorphisms between the control and patient groups (X (2) = 1.72 df = 2; p = 0.42, and X (2) = 0.68 df = 2; p = 0.71, respectively). Mean serum HGF concentration was significantly lower in the stone disease patients than in the control subjects (1.05 ± 0.63 pg/mL and 1.35 ± 0.58 ng/mL respectively, p = 0.0001). When allele distribution frequency between stone patients and healthy subjects was compared, there were no significant differences in intron 13 and intron 14 allele distributions between two groups (p = 0.43 and p = 0.44, respectively). It may be concluded from the findings that decrease in HGF levels may play a role in renal stone formation, independent from gene polymorphisms.

Materials and methods: Serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations were measured using a 2-site coated tube immunoradiometric assay. Results: Serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 values in gastric cancer patients were significantly lower compared to those in the control group. The difference between serum IGF-I/IGFBP-3 in patients and the control group was not significant. Conclusion: The low serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 levels detected in patients with gastric cancer could be due to decreased synthesis or increased catabolism of IGF-I or both. It could be suggested that these parameters may be important in the development and prognosis of gastric cancer.

Therapeutic potential of E. elaterium as an anti-inflammatory agent was examined by measurement of NO* metabolites in a rabbit model of rhinosinusitis. The results showed that both activity of NOS enzyme and concentration of NO* metabolites were significantly reduced by topical administration of E. elaterium extract in therapy group as compared to the control. Thus, the data suggest E. elaterium extract may have the potential to be used as anti-inflammation agent, and can be used in the treatment of rhinosinusitis diseases.

No significant differences were noted among the study groups with respect to MDA (p = 0.63) or SOD levels (p = 0.98) in either the mothers or their infants. However, there were significant differences among the study groups with respect to serum GPx activities in both the mothers (p = 0.028) and the infants (p = 0.039). When GPx activities were analyzed separately in both mothers and infants, a significant difference was noted only between the infants of smoking mothers and the infants of non-smoking mothers (p = 0.015). In conclusion, there was a significant increase in GPx activities of smoking mothers and their infants, suggesting that they may have been exposed to more oxidant stress.

Recent studies have shown that PAF may play an important role in the pathogenesis of otitis media (OM). WEB 2170 BS has been shown to be a PAF antagonist both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, the anti-inflammatory effects of WEB 2170 BS were investigated in a guinea pig model of OM induced by middle ear (ME) inoculation of killed Staphylococcus aureus. The outcome of treatment was determined by measurement of myeloperoxidase activity in the samples of ME mucosa, evaluation of temporal bone histopathology, and the presence of ME fluid. The myeloperoxidase activity in the WEB 2170 BS-treated group was found to be significantly lower than that in the control group. Histopathology of the temporal bones indicated decreased inflammation in the treated group as compared to the controls. In addition, ME fluid was absent in 16 of the 20 ears of the 10 treated animals. These results de...

However, the precise mechanism of the effects of thyroid hormone on ANP release remains to be clarified. No study investigating serum ACE together with p-ANP levels has been performed in experimental hyperthyroid and hypothyroid rabbits. The present study was designed in order to provide additional evidence of increased ANP production and secretion in hyperthyroidism and to investigate the relationships between ANP, ACE and thyroid hormones. Male New Zealand white rabbits (2.3-3.4 kg) were used throughout the study. Hyperthyroidism was induced by daily intraperitoneal administration of L-thyroxin (50 micrograms/100 g). Hypothyroidism was induced by daily intraperitoneal injection of propylthiouracil (2 mg/100 g body weight). Twelve days after the end of treatment, animals were sacrificed under anesthesia and blood samples were obtained from th...

In this study, malondialdehyde (MDA), as a lipid peroxidation marker, and ceruloplasmin (Cp) and transferrin (Trf), as antioxidant proteins, levels were determined in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of 30 MS patients before and after corticosteroid therapy and in 20 control subjects. Transferrin and Cp levels were measured by the nephelometric method and MDA was measured spectrophotometrically. Mean MDA(serum) and MDA(CSF) levels were found to be highest in the pretreatment group and lowest in the control group. Although there was no significant difference in terms of serum Trf level, serum Cp was found higher in pre- and posttreatment groups than in the control groups. Ceruloplasmin and Trf levels ...

We investigated relation between nitric oxide, which is the principal signal for relaxation of vascular smooth muscle cells, and estradiol levels in serum in men over 50 years with estrogenisation. This study included 14 men with (group 1) and 20 without estrogenisation findings (group 2). Mean nitric oxide and estradiol levels were found to be significantly lower in group 2 than group 1. Group 2 had lower levels sex-hormone binding globin and higher both systolic and diastolic blood pressure values than group 1. There was a significant correlation between nitric oxide and estradiol in esrogenisation group.

Plasma and urine carnitine levels were lower in patients with marasmus and kwashiorkor than in controls. There was no statistical difference between groups with and without carnitine supplementation on the first day. On the fifth day, in groups receiving carnitine supplementation, plasma and urine carnitine levels were significantly higher than in groups without supplementation (p < 0.01). On the 15th day there was no statistical significance between groups with PEM and controls.
