The Christian Right polarized American society and politics with its vision of a Christ-centered nation. Advocates claim a scriptural basis for their beliefs, but many Christians question their interpretation of scripture and a few openly challenge their vision. When conflicting interpretations of scripture come into dispute, how can the conflicts be resolved? “Running the Numbers on the Gospels” proposes using statistical analysis of scriptural topics discussed by Gospel authors— which topics received the most emphasis and which received the least. If we assume New Testament writers gave more weight to issues of greater importance to their churches, then acknowledging those preferences should lend credence to which side of the dispute the author leaned. This article will focus on the Gospel of Matthew to determine if, indeed, the weight the author lends to particular topics supports or undermines the Christian Right’s interpretations of Jesus’ message.

Angiosarcoma is a malignant neoplastic disease originating from or differentiating toward vascular endothelium, for which systemic pharmacologic treatment has limited durability. The molecular oncogenesis of angiosarcoma is often linked to inappropriate activations of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) family members, which presents an opportunity for the use of therapy that selectively targets the machinery of vascular signaling. Hybridization capture of 3,320 exons of 182 cancer-related genes and the introns of 14 genes frequently rearranged in cancer was applied to more than 50 ng of DNA extracted from a formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsy of recurrent angiosarcoma and was sequenced to high, uniform coverage of 939x. More than simple poetic devices, metaphors help us understand complex concepts and often shape beliefs. Many powerful metaphors become so embedded in thinking that we begin to think of them as literal statements. Nowhere is this more apparent than in religious thought, where believers may often react to the power of metaphor rather than to a question of faith. Recent publications declaring a “culture war” against the American religious right provides a compelling example. American Christians aren’t armed combatants, nor are they under attack or in jeopardy of losing their lives or even relative freedoms. Rather than stubbornly embracing or rejecting these metaphors, we need to explore them in their current context to see if any elements remain that can still be appreciated, and endeavour to refresh the language of spirituality with new metaphors that can lead to a mutual appreciation of otherwise divisive questions of faith. This paper will examine metaphors in the Christian scriptures such as “journey/path,” “spiritual warfare,” “nurturance” and “cultivation” to demonstrate how metaphors can shape and change religious thought.

Isabella van Elferen’s Gothic Music: The Sounds of the Uncanny is a welcome addition to Gothic literary studies, media apparatus, and critical theory. In addition to the work of Fred Botting, Jeffrey Sconce, Robert Spadoni, Stefan Andriopoulos, and Caetlin Benson-Allott, Gothic Music is a thought-provoking monograph not only for scholars working in the area of “the fantastic” (SF, fantasy, Gothic, horror, etc.) broadly construed. It is also, more importantly, a literary and cultural history that challenges and upgrades our general understanding of the Gothic tradition across a range of media and orthodoxies, including literature, film, television, computer games, Goth club nights, and festivals.

In this essay I explore the intersection of the War Gothic and the monstrous anthropocene in Anglo American comics and graphic narratives between 1950 and 1982. More specifically, I focus on the transition between New Trend EC war comics (Two-Fisted Tales, 1950-1955; Frontline Combat, 1951-1954) and DC war tales (Weird War Tales, 1971-1983) after changes in the Comics Code Authority (CCA) made the use of horror elements possible. Furthermore, I examine the connection between the notion of the EcoGothic body and the ruined battlefield as Gothic landscape in Swamp Thing (DC, 1972-1976) and The Saga of Swamp Thing (DC, 1982-1985). After the CCA boycott of classic horror archetypes is lifted in 1971, publications like Weird War Tales and The Saga of Swamp Thing exploit the overlap of and complicity between Gothic discourse and the realm of military experience. As a result, the war hero and superhero are converted into a leading figure of the anti-war and deep ecology movements. Contextually, I look at the moment or period between the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Topics covered in this essay include military mobilization, imagining the enemy, the experience of combat, the space of the battlefield, military technology, destruction and reconstruction.

According to Shoshana Zuboff, the rise of computer-mediated transactions has deeply impacted the modern economy in terms of data extraction and analysis, new contractual forms due to better monitoring, personalization and customization, and (the especially ominous proclamation) continuous experiments. How does this apply to 1980s horror?

Purpose. To compare the effects of physiologic versus pharmacologic pupil dilation on anterior chamber angle (ACA) measurements obtained with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).Methods. Forty eyes from 20 healthy, phakic individuals with open angles underwent anterior segment OCT imaging under 3 pupillary states: (1) pupil constricted under standard room lighting, (2) physiologic mydriasis in a darkened room, and (3) postpharmacologic mydriasis. Inferior angle Schwalbe’s line-angle opening distance (SL-AOD) and SL-trabecular-iris-space area (SL-TISA) were computed for each eye and pupillary condition by masked, certified Reading Center graders using customized grading software.Results. SL-AOD and SL-TISA under pupillary constriction to room light were0.87±0.31 mm and0.33±0.14 mm2, respectively; decreased to0.75±0.29 mmP<0.01and0.29±0.13 mm2  P<0.01, respectively, under physiologic mydriasis; and increased to0.90±0.38 mmP<0.01and0.34±0.17 mm2  P=0.06under ...
