Abstract: Territories are now consumer products and, therefore, they need brands. In this sense, the highly competitive market, constantly needing to attract foreign investment, exports and tourism, has put territorial brands on top of the agendas of local, regional and national politics all over the world. The city of Oporto (Portugal) recently adopted a new corporate and visual identity, aligned with the global trend to differentiate places by valuing their individuality. The graphical solution for the new brand called "Porto." will be analyzed as a case study, aiming to assess the graphical grammar employed in its construction, the symbolic elements it uses and the operational impact to the public. There is a syntactic and pragmatic efficacy as an outcome of a brand technically well crafted, but its symbolic force seems scattered and closer to a historic design as a testimony than to any political ambition. We will need to wait for the brand to make its journey of implementation to assess whether their management over time favors the strategic positioning of Oporto, in the visually sophisticated global market we are living in.
