Amazonは米国時間8月21日、Amazon Web Servicesが提供するクラウドコンピューティングスイートのオプションとして、長期的なストレージサービス「Elastic Block Service（EBS）」をリリースすると発表した。すでにAmazonは、今回の方針を4月に打ち出していた。 以前は、Amazonのクラウドコンピューティングプラットフォーム「EC2」上で実行されるジョブのデータは、そのジョブに付属する存在であったため、開発者は、EC2を通してのみ、そのファイルや情報へのアクセスが可能であった。しかしながら、EBSによって、開発者は、どんな望みのアプリケーションからでもアクセスが可能な、クラウドベースのファイルシステムの構築が可能となる。Amazonの他のクラウドストレージシステムとなる「S3」や「SimpleDB」では、このローレベルのアクセスは提供されていない。
