Settings : Data were obtained from Asir Region main traffic office. The records of road traffic accidents for 3 years, 1989-1991, were reviewed. The pattern of accidents in Asir in the last year (1991) was compared with those in the different regions of the kingdom in the same year. Data were presented and analysed using statistical tests such as χ 2 and confidence intervals. Results : In all, 2867 road traffic accidents were recorded in the study period involving 4000 vehicles. The individuals involved were 7759 persons of whom 61.7% were injured, 11.3% died and 26.5% sustained no injury. The accident severity rates in Asir Region were generally higher than those in other regions of the kingdom. Conclusion and recommendation : This study revealed that road traffic accidents are an important problem in Asir Region. This was confirmed...

Methods: The diabetic register of the health center was assessed to find out the outcome of diabetic care. Two checklists were also used to compile essential diabetic care. Results: There was a poor degree of diabetic control, diabetic care and compliance which did not reach national targets. The degree of compliance was significantly related to the degree of diabetic care but the degree of control was not statistically significant in relation to the degree of care. The obstacles identified were categorized as non availability all the time or sometimes and included finance, manpower. logistics and equipment. Conclusion and recommendations: The methods suggested for the removal of the obstacles were thought necessary and were recommended to other Primary Health Care Centers in Asir Region,...

Design : BP was measured using the standard sphygmomanometer and stethoscope. Workers were classified based on age, type of job, and the number of years they have worked in the factory. Setting : The factory is located in a village and has an ill-equipped clinic run by a nurse. Participants : All the workers present in the factory for the three days of the study participated. Results : Blood pressure increased with age. Increases in blood pressure were not influenced by “cement related jobs” in the factory. The administrative staff had the highest number of “hypertensives”. Newly employed workers were found to have higher mean systolic and diastolic pressures than others. Conclusion : Pollution in the cement factory may not influence blood pressure directly, but inactivity and the psychological stress associated with working i...

A multi-stage sampling method was used to recruit 253 control and 256 intervention patients. The study sites selected were HIV treatment centres in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (control), and Ifako-Ijaiye and Isolo General Hospitals (intervention). A pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. The study site intervention consisted of health education seminars. Post-intervention data were collected after 3 and 6 months. Total study duration was about 10 months. At baseline, there was no statistically significant difference in the sexual behaviour of respondents in both groups. Post-intervention, the notable effects of t...

The overall prevalence of anemia (Hb < 11 g/dl) was found to be 31.9%. It was found that the prevalence was affected by age (37.3% among those who were less than 20 years old), parity (34.9% among those who had 7 and more deliveries), inter-pregnancy spacing (35.2% among those whose birth spacing was less than 1 year), gestational age, and education (35.1% among illiterates). Health education programs at primary health care level in the region should be revised to stress the importance of balanced diet, compliance with iron medication and sufficient spacing between subsequent pregnancies.

The study confirms the view that there is a strong familial predisposition in febrile seizures. Major causes of the rise in temperature in those studied included malaria, which accounted for 32.7%, followed by bronchopneumonia (16.8%), measles (15.4%), otitis media (13.4%) and tonsillitis (10.5%). The morbidity and mortality could be attributable to the socio-cultural background of the community which practices modes of therapy that are often detrimental to the health of patients.

Non-availability of constant electrical supply needed to keep vaccine at their original potency, shortage of trained health manpower, administrative shortcomings and lack of proper health education have been identified as some of the factors hindering effective implementation of the programme.
