religious and ethnic processes in the region. Shifting identities as a result of Islamisation and
Turkification in previous periods intensified even more during the era of Mongol rule, which led to
the strengthening of the Turkic-Muslim factor. In the future, this manifests itself with the
establishment of power of the Qaraqoyunlu (Baharly) and Akkoyunlu (Bayandurid) dynasties,
replacing each other. This paper examines the issue through the prism of History, Religious Studies
and the Identity Studies. The study shows that Mongol rule, on the one hand, created conditions for
the preservation of the Christian Church on the territory of the modern Azerbaijan Republic. On the
other hand, with the adoption of Islam by Ghazan Khan Ilkhanate, the role of Islam in social and
cultural life strengthens. Due to the lack of a strict control by the authorities over Islam and Sharia
Law, new Muslim sectarian movements are emerging and the Shiite sense of Islam is strengthening.
This period in Azerbaijan is also remarkable with strengthening the position of the Turkic population,
as the Ilkhanates resettled significant number of Turkic tribes into the region.

Holding a weak position among the common people, who preserved ancient traditions, the Caucasian Albanian Church proved unable to maintain its position after the Arab conquest, which created new political conditions. Prior to and during the Arab conquest the struggle between dyophysitism and monophysitism created uncertainty and weakened the status of Christianity in the region. Studies show that the Caucasian Albanian Church was an adherent of monothelitism and maintained close ties with Byzantium and the Georgian Orthodox Church throughout most of the Mihranid dynasty's reign. However, with the strengthening of the Arab Caliphate during Umayyad rule, the political situation changed and the Armenian Church, holding good relations with the Caliphate, achieved the subordination of the Caucasian Albanian Church. The study reveals a number of reasons for the weakening and subordination of the Albanian Church to the Armenian.

Moreover, the aim of the research is to examine the links between the ancient and modern population of Azerbaijan via this lens. On the other hand, both the Turkic population and non-Turkic ethno-linguistic groups of Azerbaijan preserved many elements of ancient culture and religious beliefs. The objectives of the study include, first of all, investigation of the mutual aspects of these elements, furthermore, determination of their causes.
For example, among the all groups, regardless of their religious affiliation, both the Christian Udis and the Muslim ethno-linguistic groups, including Azerbaijani Turks, vestiges of the worship to the lunar goddess is preserved widely. Despite the fact that, the same cultural phenomenon, the signs of the ancient beliefs, associated with the nature-based spiritual paths, appears among the different ethnic groups in various forms, there are also many common features that unite them. Interestingly, as a result of the comparative analysis, these common features also manifest themselves in the ancient elements of the material and spiritual culture of both Azerbaijan and other Turkic nations.
This research is based on the primary written sources and ethnographic and cultural anthropological observations conducted in Azerbaijan over the last years.
