This holy meaning attributed to the cross led to the emergence of various types of crosses designed for different purposes in Byzantine religious and civil life. Among these, the crosses used as jewelry have drawn great respect and attention as objects that illuminate the way to salvation. The most common objects used in Byzantine religious and social life were reliquary crosses. They were among the most popular types of reliquaries due to their small size and ease of carrying as an encolpion. In addition to the holy relics they carried, the rich iconography on them was a major factor in this common usage. Often decorated with images of Jesus Christ on the Cross on one side and the Theotokos Mary on the other, these objects also include depictions of archangels, Gospel writers, and saints, who act as mediators for the salvation of humanity and are venerated for their healing powers. Through these holy persons, crosses function at the service of the bearer as a kind of amulet that is believed to have miraculous protective, recovering or healing powers. These objects, on which different techniques and applications of Byzantine metalworking can be clearly seen, are a concrete expression of the devotion and piety of Orthodox Christians from all walks of life. Haluk Perk Museum in Istanbul sheds light on many aspects of the reliquary crosses and their great importance in Byzantium and the cultures under its influence with the samples in its collection. In the collection, which presents an important selection of Anatolian finds, there is rich variety, from simple pieces to elaborate productions that feature fine details of the holy figures of Christian iconography. In this study, these crosses, which are mostly made of bronze and were mass produced during the Middle Byzantine Period, are classified according to their construction techniques, forms, iconography, and stylistic features and evaluated alongside archaeological data and existing samples. The study also examines the different styles and diversity in the reflections of the depictions of holy persons – whose images returned to art after the Iconoclasm period – on the crosses in the museum, focusing specifically on their value in the Orthodox faith as objects of personal protection and respect.
A lead seal of Alexius I Comnenus was found during excavations of the Agora Sector of Smyrna in 2... more A lead seal of Alexius I Comnenus was found during excavations of the Agora Sector of Smyrna in 2008. On the obverse of the seal is the enthroned Christ and on the reverse a full-length figure of the emperor. These representations are common for the Constantinopolitan electrum trachea, which come from the emperor’s early years – the transitional coinage type has been dated by M. F. Hendy to between 1081 and 1082. The depictions on this transitional coinage type of electrum trachea and on the lead seal of Alexius I Comnenus from the Agora Sector have a notable resemblance. Later issues of electrum trachea bear different representations and inscriptions, but the style of seals remained unchanged. As testimony of correspondence of the imperial court with Smyrna and its iconographical parallelism with coins, the lead seal of Alexius I Comnenus is an important find for the Agora Sector/Smyrna Excavation. The Agora Sector lead seal presents a close relationship between the iconography of seals and coins of Byzantine Empire.

Hi... more When Heraclius died in 641 AD, a conflict started for gaining the throne between his two sons. His two oldest sons Heraclius Constantine (Constantine III) and Heraclonas who were brothers-in-law, were crowned as emperors. Constantine III died three months after his coronation. The public and the Senate rejected Heraclonas’ and his mother Martina’s domination and insisted on crowning the son of Constantine III called Constans as a sole emperor. Although his baptismal name was Heraclius, he was officially given the name of Constantine but this was popularly abbreviated to Constans. Constans II depicted with his son, co-emperor Constantine IV, on his issues and his other sons whose name were Tiberios and Heraclius also depicted on the reverse side of gold coins. A group of gold coins were found in Kavaklı in 1978 and then they were brought to Aydın Museum. Kavaklı Hoard has a group of solidi from the reign of Constans II. There are five different types: Class III (651-654), Class IV (654-659), Class V (659-661), Class VI (661-663), Class VII (663-668). The hoard of Kavaklı will be presented according to its classifications with the help of the historical events of the era.

Abstract
Both ancient written sources and archaeological finds provide evidence that the ancient city of Tralleis was established on the plains of the southern skirts of Mount Kestane (Mesogis). The excavations performed at the site of the ancient city of Tralleis have unearthed the Gymnasium, the Northern and Western Workshops, the Western Necropolis, Underground Tunnel System and the Villa Sectors, all of which are dated to the Roman era, as well as the Episcopal Church, which is dated to the Early Byzantine period.
In this study, we will introduce Roman and Late Antique bone objects discovered in the excavations conducted in the Northern and Western Workshops of the Gymnasium and on the fill area at the Underground Tunnel System exit. The production of bone objects and workshops of ancient Tralleis will be also evaluated. Bone objects were unearthed during the excavations in the ancient city of Tralleis, and these were examined according to their forms and functions.

İmparatorluğu sikkeleri I. Manuel Komnenos (1238-1263) döneminden başlamakta
ve IV. Ioannes Komnenos (1446-1458) iktidarında son bulmaktadır.
Although there have been studies conducted on the coinage system and the
coinage iconography of the empire, which was established at the end of 1203
by Alexios and David Komnenos, who were members of the Byzantine Empire
Dynasty and later became known as the Grand Komnenoi, there is a need for
more comprehensive studies on the subject. By conducting comprehensive research
at the museums within the area the Trebizond Empire of once stood, more
information and a better understanding of the empire’s coinage system can be
attained.
In our study, selections of coins dated to the Trebizond Empire from the
Trebizond Museum were examined. Among the coins of the Trebizond Empire
registered in the Trebizond Museum inventory, 152 silver and copper coins that
were able to be classified and provide chronological data were selected for inclusion
in the study. The selected silver and copper coins from the Trebizond Empire
date from the period of Manuel I Komnenos (1238-1263) to the period of Ioannes
IV Komnenos (1446-1458).

The paper will explore the geographical location and the political context of the find, describe its composition, compare it with published hoards and finds of similar content and provenance, and place it in its historical and economic setting. This presentation is also expected to contribute to the very few studies on the coins of the Empire of Trebizond.
