This essay explores the ways in which Catholic Mexican women of the Juventud Católica Femenina Mexicana (JCFM) employed press mechanisms as a means to produce and disseminate conservative ideologies to combat the nascent state’s left-leaning agenda. I place Mexican women at a nexus point between the social and ideological standoffs of Mexico’s Cristero Rebellion, on the one hand, and the cultural and political battles of the early Cold War. Specifically, I grant special focus to JCFM magazines and pedagogical campaigns as vehicles of social mobilization among female teachers, students, farmworkers, laborers, and domestic employees. On the one hand, I critically examine notions of Catholic feminism, as developed by members of the JCFM. On the other, I analyze social divisions among JCFM members, particularly as these emerged along racial and class lines. Ultimately, I question the effectiveness of JCFM magazines and social campaigns as tools for ideological unification and social mobilization.

This article explores intersections between religious conservatism, pro-Americanism, and whitenes... more This article explores intersections between religious conservatism, pro-Americanism, and whiteness in Mexican society. Specifically, it examines past and present attempts by white elites and religious conservatives to surveille indigenous women’s bodies and sexuality, to “Americanize” Mexico, and to glorify the nation’s European legacies at the expense of erasing—and even justifying—anti-indigenous violence. This paper analyzes conservative activism as carried out by early-twentieth=century Catholic activists and contemporary social media users grappling with the present-day “whitexican” phenomenon. It analyzes Mexicans’ unspoken appeals to whiteness as they permeate prevalent discourses of feminine propriety and religious restoration, North American cultural proximity, indigenous criminality, and brown-skinned deviance.

It unearths the authoritarian dimensions of the group's educational initiatives and exposes these efforts as fundamentally racial, gendered, and classconscious political and religious projects. Moreover, this article traces how the JCFM, as an influential upper-class laywomen's group, tried-and failed-to establish a nationwide educational curriculum grounded in Church doctrine to counter the influence of Protestant missions and Mexico's nascent Secretariat of Public Education. It attributes these shortcomings to laywomen's adherence to social hierarchy and their reluctance to offer meaningful solutions to peasant women's economic hardships.
