One of the defining characteristics of the many different kinds of lutes, archlutes, and theorboe... more One of the defining characteristics of the many different kinds of lutes, archlutes, and theorboes is the particular tuning that each instrument was identified with. Art works are extremely rich in images of lutes, but the tuning of a depicted instrument is, in most cases, impossible to determine. In addition, there is still some confusion in both primary and secondary musicological sources about the correct naming of individual types of instruments. It is possible, however, to distinguish between a few main types of lutes that can be easily recognized in iconographical sources. The article presents a proposal for an iconographical classification of the main types of European lutes from the 16th Centyry to the lute's demise in the late 18th Century, based on external features that do not include their tuning.
