Navigating Souths builds upon the theoretical frameworks of the New Southern Studies, the Global South and Nuevo South as well as other dominant trends in the fields of the contributors and that of Southern Studies, most particularly contemporary critical theory. Other works, most notably Tara McPherson’s Reconstructing Dixie (2003), Jon Smith and Deborah Cohn’s Look Away! The U.S. South in New World Studies (2004), James Cobb’s Redefining Southern Culture (1999) and John Lowe’s Bridging Southern Cultures (2005), have broadened conceptions of the region and challenged scholars to engage in greater interdisciplinary exchanges. The essays in this work build upon the foundation provided by these and other works and provide working models for both collaborative and individual application of transdisciplinary approaches to the study of the South.

Adolescent Latinas in the United States and in AL are disproportionately affected by sexual health disparities as evidenced by the disproportionate burden of HIV, STIs and early pregnancy compared with their non-Hispanic, White counterparts. In 2011, Alabama passed 1 of the harshest anti-immigration laws in the nation. Following the passing of this law, county health department visits among Latino adults decreased by 25% for STIs and 13% for family planning. Empirical data with adult Latinas in the Southeast suggest significant barriers to sexual healthcare access. However, to our knowledge, no other researchers have examined barriers and facilitators to sexual healthcare access for this subpopulation. Therefore, the goal of this 3-phase study is to: (a) bet...

Young Latina women (YLW) in Alabama are disproportionately affected by sexual health disparities.... more Young Latina women (YLW) in Alabama are disproportionately affected by sexual health disparities. However, to access needed reproductive services, YLW must navigate a healthcare landscape that restricts access for youth. YLW also face racialized immigration enforcement in their communities which is designed to attrition the region's emergent Latina/o/x immigrant population. This paper describes the intersectional, structural forces that contribute to experienced systemic violence for YLW as they try to access sexual healthcare services. In 2017, we conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with 20 YLW and 24 key stakeholders (parents, providers, Latino/a/x community leaders etc.) in West Alabama to examine attitudes and perceptions about sexual health and healthcare access (HCA) among YLW in the region. We used purposeful convenience sampling and snowballing to recruit a community-based sample. That is, we purposefully recruited YLW, adjusting through the recruitment peri...
