Reading the corpus within the framework of materialist postcolonial theoretical propositions, this article demonstrates how the stories, which link the colonial with the criminal, draw maps of London that locate particular areas of the city as sites in which Asia as colonial threat is hesitantly integrated into the metropolitan landscape. As also contemporaneous nonliterary texts testify, the stories, particularly “The Sign of Four” (1890), recognize the particularly ambivalent role of the Thames and corresponding transportation infrastructures, which both enable the building of the imperial metropolis and pose as a gateway for external threats to enter. The stories depict the city as spaces regulated not only by civic apparatuses but also epistemological conventions, both of...

Firstly, although several forms of puppetry still survive in Indonesian culture particularly in Sundanese, Javanese, and Balinese cultures, puppet performances no longer a form of performing arts that exist in mainstream Indonesian cultural life, only being performed in special occasions unlike for example film screenings and popular music concerts. Secondly, culture is conceived as being dependent on the primordial and ethnocentric ideas of authenticity and originality causing the loss of public support of cultural forms such as shadow puppet performances and theater. With the rise of the significance of digital technology, it becomes more apparent that texts, literary or otherwise, are produced and styled by systems of coding, making bare the ideological premises that operate texts. By looking at the technologies previously used to produce texts and particularly the current explorations in electronic literature, this presentation seeks to show codes used to produce texts are ideologically charged.

This text was translated into Sundanese and printed in the Cacarakan script to serve as reading material for local children in the context of the Ethical Policy. This paper intends to show the relationship between the colonial socio-political context in the Dutch-Indies and the transition of the Sundanese society into the liberal economy and its various modes of expression which rely on the modern publishing industry and print technology. Employing New Historicist and cultural materialist methods in the postcolonial framework, we would like to argue that CRK represents how the efforts to educate local young people through the promotion of literacy and literature attempt to negotiate 18th- and 19th-century liberal humanist views with local Sundanese values, the result of which is still apparent today in contemporary Sundanese ideals.
Keywords: Robinson Crusoe, Kartawinata, print, Landsdrukkerij, Sunda, modernization.

Considering the extensive reach of the market of the publishing industry at the time I would further argue that the pervasiveness of the distribution of printed materials in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries had created a cosmopolitan consciousness among the urban middle-classes nurtured by but also critical of the colonial condition. Such is also apparent in the fiction by Arthur Conan Doyle and James Joyce in which the urban settings of London and Dublin is thematically central. Looking at specifically articles and advertisements in The Strand Magazine published in London and Bintang Hindia published in Batavia, and James Joyce’s Ulysses, focusing on the chapter “Aeolus,” I would like to demonstrate how cities and their inhabitants are translocally linked to circumstances beyond geographical limitations, creating imagined but very real economies connecting Batavia and Amsterdam, Dublin and New York, Dublin and London, London and Agra.
