The novel was adapted for the cinema the same year and directed by John Ford. Proving welcome in cinema circles and taking its place as a master work in film history, it was one of the few films with radical political connotations hitherto produced by Hollywood. Nevertheless, this cinematic version of the Great Depression narrative has not escaped criticisms,
which have been aimed chiefly at aspects of its content that diverge from its parent work. Compared with the novel, the film has been considered more conservative and optimistic, on the grounds that, although the novel emphasizes the class conflict and portrays the Joads as only one of the many suffering families, the film exerts a redundant focus on the family and commends family values: divergences considered to be supported by the visual style of the film. In this article, while recalling Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath, I revisit the above-mentioned criticisms and reassess them in relation to the parenting novel. In doing so, this article also aims to evoke the ongoing economic recession that influences the masses all over the world and the recurrent, unchanging and inevitable outcomes that such crises of capitalism bring for its victims.

In this paper, I argue that these constructions are persistent, and can be seen in recent films. Specifically, I demonstrate that Greek characters are limited to a few stereotypical names and roles, assigned heavy Turkish accents, and for the most part, confined to female roles depicted primarily as ‘indecent’ and/or objects of the male gaze.

Considering the experience of twenty years left behind in Turkey’s membership to Eurimages, this article examines the influences/contributions of a supranational cinema support fund – which demands a series of criteria to be met - on a national cinema. The focus is particularly on: the nationalness and/or Europeanness of Eurimages-backed Turkish initiative films in terms of both style and content; co-producer country preferences of Turkish producers; and the contributions of Eurimages support to filmmaking practices in Turkey.
As written materials on this quite new phenomenon are limited in number, the analyses are primarily attained through a study of the films, interviews with the professionals (those made by the author and some cited from the media as well) who have first hand experience of the process, and official documents of Eurimages. Following the definition and objectives of the Fund, various conclusions out of the lived experience and criticisms are put forth.

In addition to the co-production, exhibiton and distribution support provided by Eurimages, and its contribution to filmmaking practices, Turkish-initiative co-productions - those directed by Turkish filmmakers, and those whose themes are pertinent to Turkey - are analysed herein with regard to the 'nationalness' of their content and narrative styles.
Eurimages practically has been a good source of financial support for Turkish filmmakers seeking to engage with the problematic aspects of Turkey's national identity or simply seeking to convey the contribution of components to Turkey's overall cultural identity. This study also reveals those representations of diversity with particular regard to ethnic, religious and gender identities through a close examination of Turkish-initiative co-productions that have been supported by the Fund.

The exclusion of Greek identity has served to the consolidation of nationalism in Turkey for long... more The exclusion of Greek identity has served to the consolidation of nationalism in Turkey for long years. This exclusion was not limited to politics, economy, socio-cultural life etc. Cinema, a powerful propaganda apparatus, executed its role in this context as well. Being one of ‘constitutive other’ elements for Turkish nationalism, Greek ethnic minority has mostly been stereotyped and genderized by films produced in Turkey. Not only the minority Greeks, but also the Greek identity outside Turkey – in Greece and Cyprus – could not escape this exclusion either; they have mostly been represented as the ‘historical enemy’.
On the other hand, co-productions between Turkey and Greece have been a practice since the early 1930s - films which are not expected to give place to exclusion or to adopt a biased approach against one of the co-producing party’s identity by their very nature. The number of co-productions in which Turkish and Greek filmmakers co-operated has significantly increased by the emergence of Eurimages in late 1980s (the cinema support fund of Council of Europe), so that Greece has been one of Turkey’s top partners in terms of the films supported by the fund. While culturally supporting the works which reflect the multiple facets of the European society, Eurimages do not provide funding for the films that advocate violence or incite against human rights.
In the above outlined context, my paper compares the Greek representation in local Turkish films versus Turkish-initiative (director, theme and landscape are predominantly from Turkey) co-productions with Greek partners that are supported by Eurimages. Historical background and numerical data will be provided where needed.

Remaining under the authority of local governors initially, the censorship was centralized in 1932 with a code and films have practically gone under definite control mechanisms since then. This was the main factor that forced filmmakers to a limited discursive space for a long period of time. Nevertheless, filmmakers pushed and invented methods to overcome the censorship code.
The 1970s witnessed a notable paradox with regard to the practice of the abovementioned censorship system. Those were the years wherein the producers had various difficulties due to the economic and political conditions of the country – such as the limitations to import stock films and the change in the moviegoers’ profile. The families, who were the main mass audience of the domestic melodramas and comedies were gradually withdrawn from movie theatres. Under these conditions, many filmmakers had to produce either B-movies or sexual comedies for a younger male audience, shot on cheaper 16mm film stocks, in order to survive. Those new genres accelerated the withdrawal of families from Turkish cinema. Although one of the censorship criteria for the films to be released was the article that banned the images and content which were ‘against the average moral values and national emotions’, almost all of those sexual comedies some of which had explicit content passed the censorship mechanism and were screened in movie theaters nationwide.
In our paper, we first provide a historical background for censorship in Turkish film history which will be followed by the examples from practices and paradoxes in the 1970s. The issue will be handled within its economic and political contexts.

Bütün sıradanlığıyla insanları her an etkilemekte, kendilerine, topluma ve doğaya yabancılaştırmaktadır.

which have been aimed chiefly at aspects of its content that diverge from its parent work.
John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath, published in 1939, depicts the poverty of 1930s America during the " Great Depression " through the tragedy of the Joad family, who lost their home and land in Oklahoma and have to drive to California in the hope of finding employment and plenty like many other farmers. The novel was adapted for the cinema the same year and directed by John Ford. Proving welcome in cinema circles and taking its place as a master work in film history, it was one of the few films with radical political connotations hitherto produced by Hollywood. Nevertheless, this cinematic version of the Great Depression narrative has not escaped criticisms, which have been aimed chiefly at aspects of its content that diverge from its parent work.

The issue will be handled within its economic and political contexts.

shot as a continuation in the history of cinema is the Sherlock Holmes
films shot shortly after the invention of cinema. This series, which
started with Sherlock Holmes I (Viggo Larsen, 1908), continued until
1910 with a total of 6 films produced by the same director. “Making a
sequel wasn’t something Hollywood used very often until the late 1970s.
With the development of popular culture, the number of applications for
sequels has gradually increased; With the Oscar for The Godfather, a
1972 Francis Ford Coppola movie, the sequel of this movie was also
encouraged” (Göral, 2003, p.105-106). There are many elements in the
concept of visual continuity and they are all interrelated. In films or
film series that are described as sequels, establishing a visual
integrity relationship between films comes to the fore. The concept of
the sequel appears in two ways. Sometimes, while the ideas are scripted,
the story is divided into more than one part. Sometimes the story is
planned as a single movie, and after a certain time, it can be realized
as a follow-up movie/films for different reasons. In both systems of
expression, it is necessary to seek harmony between all elements of
visual design. This research aims to include analyzes that examine
sequels, serials and trilogy on the axis of cinematography and
narration.
