Hundreds of inscriptions that once stood in numerous local sanctuaries preserve to this day a rich image of the intensive and colorful cult life that flourished everywhere in this region. It is our duty to collect and study them in their original context. This study focuses on the divine epithets attached to the names of the local deities – toponymical, functional and ‘foundational’. All of these epithets provide invaluable insights into the beliefs, hopes and fears of the local population, in addition to being the first-rate evidence illuminating the social and economic life of the region in the Roman Imperial period.

The new inscription from Thyateira contains the first epigraphical attestation of the Roman senator Domitius Florus previously known only from a short reference in Dio Cassius, while the new inscription from Hierokaisareia honours a previously unattested Asiarch.
