Tom Rochester
I am an historian of Anglo-Saxon England, particularly the 7th and 8th centuries, with broader interests in ecclesiastical history and late antique/early medieval theology.
I completed an AHRC-funded PhD at the University of Birmingham in December 2017, which was titled "Sanctity and Authority: Documenting Miracles in the Age of Bede". Exploring questions of originality and historical precedent, this was a systematic examination of Bede’s corpus and asked how his understanding of truth and history influenced the way he narrated miracle stories, particularly through the use of eyewitnesses. I began my doctorate under the supervision of the late Prof. Nicholas Brooks, then Dr. Simon Yarrow and Dr. Peter Darby.
I completed a BA in History at the University of Leicester in 2012, followed by an AHRC-funded MA in History, also at Leicester, in 2013.
I currently work at the University of Birmingham.
Supervisors: Simon Yarrow and Peter Darby
