I'm completed improvement internships in Plant Virology at the Instituto Biológico in phytovirus purification techniques, production of antisera and training in serological techniques at the Istituto di Virologia Vegetale, CNR, Turin, Italy (1985). I'm a Scientific Researcher, at the Plant Virology Laboratory on Biológico Institute. I was member of the Committee of the Postgraduate Program and coordinator of the Plant Pathology discipline. I'm working with plant virus by biological, serological and molecular characterization of phytoviruses and mycoviruses with some methods for the identification and diagnosis of different species of viruses in vegetable and fruit plants and fungi.

Foliar samples of the X. riedelianum showing mosaic, mottle and vein clearing symptoms were collected in the municipality of Monte Alegre (São Paulo State). Transmission electron microscope observations, mechanical transmission to experimental plants, serological (DAS-ELISA) and RT-PCR analyzes indicated that the symptoms could be associated with the presence of dasheen mosaic virus (DsMV, Potyvirus). This is the first report of DsMV in X. riedelianum in Brazil.

Lately, its cultivation has increased in different regions of Brazil. The presence of such perennial crop in Sao Paulo state could represent a possible source of viruses to another crop plants since it was found with virus-like symptoms. Cubiu plants, from Angatuba, SP, showing foliar mosaic, necrotic rings and blisters were submitted to biological, electron microscopy, serological, and molecular analysis. In infected leaf samples observed under the electron microscope, pleomorphic, enveloped particles about 100 nm in diameter were found. Experimentally inoculated host plants, including cubiu, showed symptoms comparable to those caused by tospoviruses. By DASELISA, using antisera against the main tospovirus species that occur in Brazil, the Tomato chlorotic spot virus (TCSV) was identified. A coat protein gene fragment of 453 bp was amplified, cloned, and sequenced. The nucleotide sequence of the cubiu isolate compared with other TCSV isolates confirmed its identity. TCSV is prevalent in Sao Paulo State and has been described on several solanaceous crops. The identification of this virus in a recently introduced crop in Sao Paulo is highly important because the inexistence of epidemiological data and the potential losses that this virus species could cause.

They are generally cryptic or latent, but they can induce minor or imperceptible changes in hosts. Mycoviruses can interfere with the symptoms induced by phytopathogenic fungi hosts, and in some cases they reduce the virulence of its host. Therefore, they are objects of study since they are potential biocontrol agents and are important tools for knowledge of fungal pathogenesis mechanisms. The aim of this review was to gather literature data concerning general aspects of biology and behavior of mycovirus, focusing some phytopathogenic mycovirus.
