Rashed M . Y . Al-Sa`ed
Rashed Al-Sa´ed is currently a Professor in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering at the Institute of Environmental and Water Studies (IEWS) of Birzeit University. After earning his doctor of engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from the Braunschweig University of Technology in 1987, he spent the next ten years as a designer and developer of process technology for nature- and membrane-based wastewater treatment systems in Germany. Al-Sa`ed has dedicated his professional life to a unified integration of academic research, teaching, and professional practice. Through water and environmental education, applied research, and training programs, Al-Sa`ed aims at closing the gap between academia, practitioner, and civil society communities, and strives to initiate collaborative engagements to promote regional social and political change. The geospatial scope of Al-Sa`ed’s work ranges from local to EU and MENA region inclduing Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Germany, Sweden and The Netherlands. His applied research projects include all aspects of wastewater management, planning and design of nature- and membrane-based systems for energy-efficient wastewater management, water recycling, and energy recovery using cutting-edge engineered bioprocesses, cleaner production, and nature-based solutions for pollution prevention, BNR upgrades, process evaluation of water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) in developing countries, engagement initiatives in industrial, and municipal transboundary wastewater. Key engagement initiatives include active memberships in Academic Advisory Board on Water, and ex-membership in the Regional Sub-Technical Committee on Water and Sanitation Infrastructure. Currently, he is involved in environmental education, applied research, and training. His present research fields concentrate on biological nutrient removal using nature- and membrane-based bioreactors, sustainable sanitation facilities, reclaimed water, and biosolids reuse, school sanitation, and testing of bench, pilot, and full-scale scale systems. He taught MSc courses including advanced WWT, EIA, IWRM, ISWM, CP, pollution control, environmental processes and biotechnology, regional political ecology, renewable energy, green infrastructure and environmental management. Al-Sa`ed’s work has led to the publication of over 100 peer-reviewed scientific and engineering articles including 9 book chapters. He attracted more than 10 million US$ in research grants, awards, and consultancies, active editorial membership in several journals, and former newsletter editor of the Dutch PoWER program including 18 education and research partners, dedicated to water education. Al-Sa`ed co-supervised 6 Ph.D. students and more than 100 M.Sc. students in water science and engineering. He is a certified engineer, an accredited environmental arbitrator and a former GIZ Technical adviser for the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA), Ministry of Local Government (MoLG), private sector, local and international NGOs. Al-Sa`ed is co-founder of IEWS, former director, and headed two M.Sc. Programs in Water and Environmental Sciences, and Engineering. He is co-founder of and Senior Technical Adviser on design, process optimization and system operation of WRRFs for Global Environmental Services Company (GES), Ramallah, Palestine
