The Templars, The Hospitallers and the Crusades. Essays in Homage to Alan J. Forey, 2020

This chapter explores this issue further, providing a detailed discussion of how one of the most influential figures of this period - the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Robert of Nantes (1240-1254), noted and described the crucial events of his period. He participated in all major events of the Crusader Kingdom in the mid-thirteenth century, among them the fall of Jerusalem in 1244, followed by the battle of La Forbie in 1244, the struggle of Saint Louis and his troops in the Seventh Crusade in Egypt in 1249-1250, and finally the presence of the French king in the territories of the Latin East in 1254-1250 and his influence on its maintenance. Most of all, this chapter emphasizes Robert of Nantes’s unique descriptions of the history of warfare in this region, specifying the number of those who fell in battle and mentioning the prisoners who fell into Muslim captivity and the effort made to ransom them, among them many brethren of the military orders. These descriptions by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, together with other medieval chronicles dealing with captivity and redemption, present a wider picture of the history of the military orders and other distinguished leaders in this turbulent period in the history of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem in the mid-thirteenth century.

During the 13th century, it became a pilgrimage site for many Christian pilgrims, who enriched the city with their religious ceremonies. Such as a procession called the Pardon d'Acre, which contributed greatly to our understanding of the religious places and military compounds in Frankish Acre. In this essay, I link the religious ceremonies that took place in Acre with the passages among the locations mentioned therein. All these contributed to the revival of the historical and religious space in medieval Acre

It was the main port city of the Crusader Kingdom, a trade center, a focal point for pilgrim transit and a site for battles against its Muslim enemies. 4 These issues have been touched upon by archaeological discoveries, which have enriched the information available to us in recent decades about the urban structure of the city, its streets and environs, and the surrounding area. 5 The Crusader city survived until 1291, the year of the occupation of Acre by the Mamluks. At that time most of its buildings were destroyed, its large wall damaged and the town left mostly empty, except for a few inhabitants who had settled among its ruins

We have information regarding this structure and its role, mainly during the golden age of the city in the th century, when it served as the capital of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, and pilgrims, nobles and Christian clergy flocked to it and described the German compound in their accounts. One of the unsolved problems of Crusader research is what happened to the German structure after Jerusalem was conquered by the Ayyubids in , and especially during the th century, when the city briefly returned to Crusader control, between the years –. This article attempts to describe the phases of the German structure in the th century, as well as its status in the mid-th century until the end of the

The emperor arrived in Jerusalem for one day only, but was still able to visit, feel the experience, and resolve a number of military and political crises. These topics, and particularly the emperor's attitude to the Kingdom and its leaders, have gained scholars attention, but very little research has been done regarding the emotional aspect of the Emperor’s attitude towards Jerusalem. In this lecture, I present a different perspective on the events of that period. I would like to point out the emperor's spiritual attitude to Jerusalem and describe his feelings regarding the loss of the holy city due to its fall into enemy hands in 1244. All these appeared in a series of chronicles and documents from the same period in the Middle Ages. It is apparent that these documents describe a different, unique perspective regarding the Emperor's feelings, particularly in relation to the suffering and loss of Jerusalem during the Crusader period.
