As such, this study examined learner preferences for discussions on reading instruction. The study also compared the discussions generated by different subgroups of students and explored the variances within students’ discussions generated from online and face-to-face learning formats. The following research questions guided the study: (a) What are learners’ preferences for discussions in reading instruction? (b) Does one discussion format facilitate meaning-making more than the other for various subgroups and (c) Do patterns of discourse and learners preferences stay consistent across time with learners’ sub-groups or do differences occur due to diversity? Results indicated that majority of participants preferred face-to-face discussion format to online discussion format in reading instruction. Par...

The clinic enrolls first grade children up to high school adolescents. The focus, according to the clinic's mission statement is to teach word recognition skills, word meanings, reading fluency and comprehension in order to tackle reading deficit at an early age. Success in this can change the path of students' academic future (Gove & Cvelich, 2011). The clinic started running in the late 1950's and parents pay for the tutoring to keep it running. In addition, some retired professors from the university have contributed financially to the running of the clinic. A professor in the Languages and Literacy Department heads the Reading Clinic at the Liberty University. One of the department's secretaries assist in the running of the clinic and there is a teaching assistant who assists the professor. On average, fifteen children register with the reading cl...

Thus, this study used survey, focus group discussions and qualitative interviews to explore the perceptions of 191 postgraduate students regarding the use of mixed research for their thesis and dissertation research. The study also explored the perceived barriers militating against postgraduate students' use of mixed research. Descriptive statistics showed that 77% (n = 147) of the respondents indicated positive perception regarding mixed research whereas 23% (n = 44) had negative perception and did not declare willingness to use mixed research for their thesis and dissertation. Thematic analysis of qualitative data indicated the rationale behind the mixed perception regarding mixed research. Among other factors, p...

However, the US ranks first among countries with the most prison population. Recent statistics from the Office of Justice program in the US Department of Justice show that about 2.5 million people are locked up in prisons or the so-called correctional facilities across the United States. These facilities are made up of nearly 2000 state prisons scattered among the 50 states, 102 federal prisons, about 2300 and 3300 juvenile prisons and local jails respectively, including 79 Indian Country jails (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2016; Wagner & Rabuy, 2015). This chapter looks at the state of prison education in the US through the prism of racism. However, the chapter does not claim to have a complete evaluation of the situation of learning and teaching in penitentiaries in the US.

The respondents were comprised of 560 lecturers and graduate students (i.e. master’s, doctoral) selected through a purposeful random sampling frame from 15 public institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. Lecturers declined to use Nigerian Creole as medium of instruction because they feared that its use might negatively affect their students’ learning of English. Graduate students indicated willingness to receive instruction through a combination of English and Nigerian Creole because they perceived the use of Nigerian Creole as fun and representative of the voice of a new generation of Nigerians. The sample reported that prior knowledge of Nigerian Creole does not facilitate the learning of English because both languages are too different to facilitate a transfer of learning.
