Inspired by the analysis of the WH-criterion (Rizzi 1991), I consider the V2 constraint as a sum of “residual” V2s. Each "residual V2" targets a different functional projection in the left periphery creating a Spec-head configuration in the activated criterial position (cf. Rizzi 2017). The “second linear” position of the verb results from the movement of the inflected verbal head (INFL) targeting the highest activated criterial position. In other words, there is no "bottleneck effect" in SpecFinP (Roberts 2004), but ordinary violations in terms of RM "of the same structural type". (Rizzi 2004). We study the emergence and popularity of these names among science fiction fans and scholars, comparing them with “mainstream” appreciators. We carry out a corpus study that analyses data extracted from textual corpora in four languages (English, German, French, and Italian) and encyclopedias (fandom communities, e.g., Aesthetics Wiki). We show that the proliferation of punk genre names tends to be closely related to science fiction and other (fan-)fiction communities, who display an emotive and intellectual investment in punk subgenres. We propose an analysis via a frame-theoretical model that shows how cyberpunk and related genre names can describe the core narrative themes of each subgenre. We then propose that punk genre names form sets of near-synonym words via their ability to describe fictional narratives featuring anti-authoritarian protagonists across ...

Our target character is ‘Prince’, the celebrity alter-ego of Prince Roger Nelson. This character had an ambiguous and complex identity, an eclectic approach to art, a strong determination in achieving one’s goals, and a keen drive to be kind and realize the emancipation of his companions, especially women. These four traits pervade receptions of Prince as a fictional character across different graphic narratives, though they are interpreted in partial and often contrasting manners. We discuss the import of this intertextual and transmedial reception of Prince as a fictional character, and how this reception is mediated via these four key traits. We suggest these traits have inspired creators to develop characters that may refer to the ‘Princian purple thread’ to differing d...

We explore three models to account for this optionality. Th e main model predicts syntactic nature to optionality, in which the syntactic structure plays a role in the licensing/or lack of licensing of the possessive marker, such as overtly realizing pragmatically defi ned contexts (e.g., the nature of the possessor) or discourse properties. We compare this model to two control groups. Th e fi rst control group states that the behavior of the marker 的 de is highly dependent to the lexical properties of the possessum, while the second control group accounts for optionality as random, possibly given by chance. Corpus counts support that the syntactic model better captures the data. Finally, we discuss our results considering a cartographic approach.

This city has a centuries-long tradition of multi-cultural and linguistic integration, with Chinese and Portuguese representing the two oldest linguistic and cultural realities. Due to the considerable growth of Macao as a global commercial hub, English has also become an emergent lingua franca in this city’s territory and society. However, gazetteers, maps, and other documents reporting Macanese place names include names in Portuguese and Chinese: English names have a restricted use and status. Such a situation naturally leads to questions that pertain to the linguistic properties of these names, and to possible asymmetries in naming practices. The paper thus aims to present a detailed analysis of the Portuguese and Chinese urbanonyms and their linguistic (e.g., grammatical, lexical, and etymological) aspects, and of the emerging English toponyms. The analysis is based on data extrac...

We focus our research on the syntactic orders in funerary inscriptions extracted from a small-sized corpus of Latin inscriptions found in the catacombs of Santa Caterina and Santa Mustiola in Chiusi (Italy) compared with a larger repository of Latin inscriptions and treebanks of stages of Latin. Finally, we quantify a "bias" favoring the non-formulaic order (Oblique-Verb) exploring transformer-based deep neural network language models trained with large-scale raw data of Latin. We believe that this type of research can feed the interdisciplinary dialogue between philological studies, theoretical linguistics, and language technology.

Chianino is an Italo-Romance variety spoken in the southeast of the province of Siena. The analysed structures involve pairs of inflected verbs merged together. The candidates for the higher verb of the pair are (i) the root of the modal dové ‘must’ and (ii) the subjunctive form of avé ‘to have’. The second element of the pair can only be a non-suppletive inflected infinitive form of the verb èsse ‘to be’, as in the cases of the second person singular dev-ess-i ‘you must be’ and abbi-ess-i ‘you have to be’ (meaning: ‘you should be’). From a pragmatic point of view, the double inflected forms avé + èsse can only have epistemic readings, while dové + èsse can also have a jussive connotation. After having briefly introduced the variety under investigation, we will discuss observational and introspective data. We will then proceed to a formal analysis. Ado...

The paper introduces urbanonyms as a sub-type of toponyms (place names) whose linguistic properties have received little attention so far. The paper proposes an experimental study that shows how urbanonyms can enter in anaphoric relations mediated via urbanonyms’ lexico-grammatical properties. Via these experimental results, it is shown that urbanonyms can act as antecedents of indexical pronouns (e.g. qui ‘here’), and complex noun phrases (e.g. questa via ‘this street’). It is also shown that urbanonyms can involve co-referring patterns in sentences including verba nominandi (chiamarsi ‘to be called’). These results are discussed against the theoretical proposals investigating toponyms and other proper names. It is suggested that the two main “rival” theories on names, the description theory and the causal reference theory, can only address the nove...

To reach this goal, 41 Latin inscriptions belonging to the early Christianity in the archaeological site of Chiusi (Italy) are coded as vectorial representations, becoming readable in a supervised machine learning environment. The features represented lexical entries conveying the nature (fully Christian, mostly Christian or mostly Pagan) of the inscription. Three studies are carried out using a machine learning software. The first study demonstrates that a model based on the (independent) presence of specific lexical entries has a better accuracy than a model taking the inscription as a single construction. The second study shows that the model is able to perform under noisy elements such as unseen inscriptions. Finally, the third study shows that our model is able to predict, due to the independent nature of the variables which will be taken into account, a class of origin relying only on the weight of a specific lexical entry/formulaic entity. The model discussed in this paper shows reliable accuracy, providing further evidence for a mutual conversation between archaeology and computational linguistics.

When queried with health-related mythbusters on COVID-19, we observe a bias that is not of a semantic/encyclopaedical knowledge nature, but rather a syntactic one, as predicted by theoretical insights of structural complexity. Our results highlight the need for the creation of health-communication corpora as training sets for deep learning.

We investigate the nature of external arguments focussing on 2-merge systems (two elements of the lexicon merge and the created unit is again merged with a further element directly extracted from the lexicon) and 3-merge systems (merge two elements created by previous operations of merge). We add a quantitative dimension to the established qualitative dimension discussed in the theory (Rizzi 2016) by investigating large-scale corpora representative of three populations of speakers: adult grammar (102 treebanks/101 languages), typically developing children (2 corpora/English and Chinese) and children with atypical development (1 corpus). The results confirm the predictions in Rizzi (2016): every language in our data set exploits...

Though both grammatical, subject and object clefts show signs of different acceptability in experimental settings. This degradation is ascribed to the fact that the object needs to cross an intervening subject, thus triggering intervention effects. In this paper, we show that intervention effects are also present in grammatical configurations, and give rise to lower-than-expected frequencies. Based on sets of features that play a role in the syntactic computation of locality, we compare the theoretically expected and the actually observed counts of features in a corpus of thirteen syntactically annotated treebanks for three languages (English, French, Italian). We find the quantitative effects predicted by the theory of intervention locality: object clefts are less frequent than expected in intervention...
