The workstation has been designed to provide real-time interactions between biological and simulated spiking neurons during in vivo BMI experiments. Parallel execution of online spike sorting, real-time spiking neural network (SNN) simulation and experimental environment controlling tasks are supported by the system to fulfill the requirements of closed-loop BMI experiments. The modular software architecture of the system enables easy replacement of SNN simulation and other computation modules required in BMI studies. In this paper, we describe the software structure and computational infrastructure of the workstation, and illustrate the results of a performance test run on the system with an implemented real-time SNN simulator.

Two basic assumptions were made to use the array for source localization, in the presence of near-field low frequency sound sources. MUSIC (Multiple SIgnal Characterization) algorithm was applied using a model formed according to these assumptions. Studies on the real data show that the assumptions are valid and the system is working. Meaningful images corresponding to the physiological phases of the cardiac cycle were obtained by processing the sounds. It is also shown that for each phase of the heartbeat, any changes in the frequency of interest or depth would yield different "images". We concluded that the proposed method would promote a new method in the screening of the heart diseases.

The fundamental components of S1 are identified by employing the Time-Frequency Representations (TFR). S1 is divided into segments in accordance with features obtained from the Choi-Williams Distribution (CWD). Sound foci related to the early contraction of the left ventricle is shown in the first one of three segments mainly recognized on the signal. In the second segment, a forceful vibrating site is observed at the center of the estimates. Sites due to closure of the mitral and the tricuspid valves and opening of the pulmonary and the aortic valves are obtained in the conventional sequence from the last main segment. In this way it is demonstrated that the sounding foci caused by the physiological events of S1 can be localized by utilizing the CARDIOPAL.

CARDIOPAL uses the heart sounds collected by the 2-D passive acoustic array and gives 2-D and 3-D images of the estimates of the sound producing sites in the heart. According to a modern perspective on the genesis of the heart sounds, they are produced by distinct and flexible structures of the heart tissue and therefore, they are multi-component signals and originate from many vibrating sites. The images extracted by the method totally support this modern perspective. Many vibrating sites during any phase of the heart beat can be visualised when the CARDIOPAL is applied together with the time-frequency representations. This study is an original contribution to the research on the genesis of the heart sounds and re-emphasizes the value of the phonocardiogram for the diagnosis of the cardiac disor...
