Its primary objective is to address the debate on the expansion of commodity frontiers and its social repercussions on native peoples. Therefore, we look at the changes and continuities in social and labour relations in both regions in regard to their colonial background and neo-colonial context, so as to demonstrate that the commodification of rubber prompted the commodification of indigenous workforce, by focusing on the practices of enslavement by debt and enslavement by tax. Ultimately, we hope to shed some light on the coloniality and violent repercussions that have underlaid the expansion of capitalism and globalisation in the Amazonian and Congo regions to this day.

After providing a preliminary evaluation of the impact of both international treaties and internal political changes at the end of the 18th century, I proceed with my main purpose: to point out changes and continuities in the dynamics of interethnic relations and highlight their subjection to shifts in the power balance between private and public " agencies. " At the same time, I propose a deeper analysis of the role of intermediaries, who emerged as key actors in the development of these relations and were often prescribed by socio-political alliances and also undoubtedly by economic ones. My ultimate objective is to provide not only voice but agency to these intermediaries, who expressed the relationships between external and (multiple) internal frontiers.

This article presents a study of the interethnic relations in the Amazonian region of the Madeira... more This article presents a study of the interethnic relations in the Amazonian region of the Madeira
River during the 17th and 18th centuries. The review of some of its main ethnohistorical sources has
allowed for the identification of processes of ethnogenesis that are examined and presented as case
studies, namely the phenomena of fleeing and the maroon communities (mocambos), and the
Tupinambarana and Mura ethnogenesis. With this, it further aims at pointing out the groups’
creative capacities, refashioned identities and roles, as well as the different strategies developed,
granting them not only voice, but also agency. By doing so, this paper intends to showcase how the
analysis of interethnic relations and processes of ethnogenesis may contribute to revisit the
ethnohistory of the region of the Madeira River, a history of domination marked by colonial
expansion in a space ideologically perceived as empty, discontinuous, devoid of actors or action.

Transnational Frontiers of Asia and Latin America since 1800
This research presents a study of the interethnic relations in the upper Madeira, a transnational... more This research presents a study of the interethnic relations in the upper Madeira, a transnational border area between modern Brazil and Bolivia, which during the course of the nineteenth century - and until fairly recently - was an undefined and unknown region located in the distant boundaries of the Iberian and later national domains. Its main purpose is to point out the changes and continuities in the dynamics of the interethnic relations within the framework of colonial territorial agreements and political reforms as well as the construction of both Brazilian and Bolivian nation-States. By doing so, it aims at further showcasing how they were subject to shifts in the power relations between private and public agencies and in the reassignment of roles. Additionally, it proposes a deeper analysis of the role of the intermediaries, who emerge as key-actors in the development of said relations by articulating them on the fringes of governmental interference between both the external and the inner multiple frontiers. Nevertheless, the choice of both these geographical and chronological settings poses a challenge right from the beginning, due to a lack of primary sources, archaeological surveys and thus, evidence; all of which may be added to a general historiographic negligence towards this area up until a few decades ago. In order to counterbalance these limitations I believe on the one hand, that the study of the interethnic relations may outline the creative and adaptive capacities of the different groups, granting them not only voice but also agency, and on the other hand, that a transdisciplinary approach from the method and viewpoint of History and Anthropology can contribute to shed some light on an otherwise empty and discontinuous history, devoid of actors or action.

The second half of the nineteenth century is perceived as a period of economic growth in South-We... more The second half of the nineteenth century is perceived as a period of economic growth in South-Western Amazonia, recovering from over half a century of both an economic and undoubtedly a historiographic lethargy. Nevertheless, despite its sudden thrive, the rubber boom period (1860-1910’s) drastically affected indigenous peoples in terms of violence and exploitation of their workforce and land. This paper presents an ethnohistorical analysis of the transformations brought about by the rubber boom for Amerindians in South-Western Amazonia. In view of this, it argues that it marked a new period of exploitation in the Amazonian economy, in which indigenous people were seen not only as valuable workforce but also as the hindering holders of invaluable and resourceful land. In order to showcase this, this paper aims to showcase the origins of indigenous land struggles, analyse their development and remind of their persistence in the context of predatory neo-extractivist activities in Amazonia. Furthermore, based on ethnographic sources, it looks at how these struggles are perceived and registered in the memory of some indigenous groups. By doing so, it hopes to outline how both Ethnohistory and Anthropology may contribute towards the understanding of an ongoing major issue that resonates throughout Latin America.
