This dichotomy has also shaped the ‘division of labour’ between the Haredi and non-Haredi Jewish communities in Israel. The article examines the yeshiva students' responses to this ideal and hegemonic model. My claim is that as a result of a series of social processes, the notion of the ideal body is facing growing resistance and is being challenged by the students themselves. The students' resistance to the ideal male body is contributing to the destabilization of the traditional relations between the earthly and the spiritual and as a result, to the undermining of the ‘division of labour’ among the various parts of Israeli Jewish society.

Together with Haredi men’s criticism of the secular body, more positive feelings can be discerned such as appreciation, envy and even adoration. I argue that due to the transition of many Haredi men into the wider Israeli space, the secular body’s influence is increasing. I also examine the principles whereby certain aspects of the secular body are being adopted while others are rejected or adopted in part.

Through extensive participant observations in a Haredi army basic training course, an occupational training program in Hi-Tech professions and the Haredi Headquarter of the Likud Party, Hakak explores the interactions between young Haredi men and the cultural and masculine models they meet in these new sites. Hakak’s observations expose the varying ways in which Haredi masculinities are being re-shaped through such interactions, and how this is impacting the Haredi minority and Israeli society more broadly.

His latest book Intercultural Parenting and Relationships: Challenges and Rewards provides a balanced overview of the challenges as well as the strengths and resiliencies of intercultural parents living in Australia. It explores the couples’ meaning-making process of everyday interactions and their own experiences of cultural differences. The book is based on an exploratory study focusing on intercultural couples living in Australia. It considers the current academic knowledge and understanding regarding intercultural couples and provides an excellent overview of the literature and theory in this area, convincingly unpacking many of the key perspectives thus helping to identify gaps in the existing research.
