Al Jamal Mustafa Shindaini is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Sociology at Bangladesh University of Professionals and a PhD research fellow of Centre for Higher Studies and Research at BUP. He has completed his Bachelor of Social Science (BSS Hons) and Master of Social Science (MSS) from University of Dhaka. He also did his MPhil from the University of Dhaka. In 11 years of his academic career, he taught in Bangladesh University of Professionals, Northern University Bangladesh, BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) and Bangladesh University of Business and Technologies (BUBT). He has published over fifteen peer-reviewed scientific articles in national and international journals about COVID-19 and mental health, natural disaster, gender violence, climate change, feminist perspective and health. He is also a popular contributor as an academician in daily newspapers i.e. The Business Standard and The Daily Sun. Currently, he is working on disaster and women resilience, migration and diaspora, Juvenile Delinquency, stratification, and inequality, Rohingya crisis from a sociological perspective. He has written the books The Role of Zakah in Poverty Alleviation in Bangladesh and The Changing Occupational Patterns in Rural Bangladesh.

A/P Shindaini teaches Research Methodology in Development Studies, Society and Culture in changing landscape (Masters Level), Foundation of Social Research, Social History and Civilizations, Introduction to Sociology, Bangladesh Studies, Social Psychology, Gender and Society, Economy and Society, Social Stratification and Inequality, Urban Sociology, Sociology of Migration and Diaspora etc. He supervised above 70 students [Masters and Hons] of Sociology and Development Studies. PurposeThis study examines the impact of institutional quality (INQ) and human capital creation (... more PurposeThis study examines the impact of institutional quality (INQ) and human capital creation (HCC) on economic growth (EG) linkage in Bangladesh using an ARDL approach.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses time-series annual data over the period 1990–2019. It formulates an INQ index based on international country risk guide (ICRG) data, employs public education outlay and expenditure on health data each as a portion of real gross domestic product (GDP) to measure HCC, while an increase in real GDP is used as a proxy for EG. It employs the ARDL technique and Toda–Yamamoto (T-Y) causality check to realize the study.FindingsThe ARDL analysis divulges that the variables have a long-run association; INQ affects long-run EG positively; expenditure on health stimulates EG rate in the long run, but does not impact the latter in the short-run; whilst government spending on education impacts long-term EG rate negatively but positively in the short-term. Assessment of mental health conditions among working class people during COVID-19 pandemic: insights from Dhaka South City, Bangladesh

This research attempts to explore the effect of COVID-19 on the mental health, sleeping patterns and professional atmosphere of the working people of Dhaka South City (DSC) in Bangladesh.. We applied a range of tools of a quantitative method to carry out the present study. The data were collected from purposively selected 139 respondents from DSC. A structured questionnaire was prepared and disseminated among the sampled respondents through online platforms in October 2020. Employing the DASS 21 scale, the study revealed that depression (82.7%), anxiety (87.8%), stress (77.7%) and sleep disturbance (56.1%) occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the study area. This research explored the effect of COVID-19 on the mental health, sleeping patterns and professional atmosphere of the working people of Dhaka South City (DSC) in Bangladesh. We applied a range of tools of quantitative method to carry out the present study. The data were collected from purposively selected 139 respondents from DSC. A structured questionnaire was prepared and disseminated among the sampled respondents through online platforms in October 2020. Employing the depression anxiety stress scale (DASS) 21 scale, the study revealed that depression (82.7%), anxiety (87.8%), stress (77.7%) and sleep disturbance (56.1%) occurred due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the study area. In addition, the paper found that respondents faced difficulty concentrating on work (p<0.05), felt workload pressure, and experienced shaky mental conditions (p<0.05) accompanied by mild to extremely severe conditions of depression, stress, and anxiety. Statistical analysis pearson Chi-square test showed that socio-demographic aspects and COVID-19 factors significantly impacted mental health conditions among the respondents. This research recommends providing low-intensity psychological interventions and mental health strategies are needed to lessen sufferings for the target population.
