On the basis of wax deposition, seed surface type is grouped in four groups. It is observed that though there were differences in seed coat colour and seed size in the wild progenitors of Vigna but the pattern of wax deposition on the seed coat is similar type.

Eighteen barley breeding lines and one commercial cultivar were evaluated under field conditions during five growing seasons. The trials were carried out under both rainfed and irrigated conditions during the first four years and under rainfed conditions only during the last growing season. Stability studies showed significant differences between the environments for all the traits and between the genotypes for thousand-grain weight, heading time and ear length. The genotype × environment interaction was, however, not significant according to the Finlay-Wilkinson analysis. The analysis of correlations between the various traits showed the importance of selecting for earliness, high number of grains/ear, stem height and ea...

Wide range of variation was observed in many traits offering scope for selection. Incorporation of gene from aromatic rice to other high yielding varieties stands out to be an important proposition for improving protein content in rice. The low difference between phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation have suggested less environmental influence on the genetic control of these quality parameters. Heritability was high for almost all the traits. Head rice recovery (HRR) and volume expansion ratio showed high GCV, PCV, GA with high heritability indicating that selection to be effective if based on these traits. Canonical analysis revealed that protein%, volume expansion ratio, kernel breadth before cooking, HRR% and kernel breadth af...

Much variability among genotypes exists in sesame which helps the breeder to choose good parents in hybridization. In the present study, 30 genotypes were studied for 12 morphological traits. Correlation analysis exhibited that seed yield per plant was positive and significantly correlated with capsules per plant and 1000-seed weight. Apart from morphological data, initial genotyping was conducted for 32 microsatellites but finally only polymorphic primers were selected for genetic diversity study. Estimated polymorphism information content (PIC) value ranged from 0.07 to 0.87 and SSR 24 showed to be highest at 0.87. The dendrogram was constructed using the software NTSYS Pc Ver. 2.20 based on morphological and molecular data. Geographical diversity did not corroborate with genotypic diversity as the cluster composition revealed that genotypes belonging to different geographi...

Also the genotypes were screened using SSR markers RM6100 and RM10313, tightly linked with the fertility restorer genes Rf4 and Rf3 respectively. The two way approach helped in identifying potential restorers for five WA-CMS lines and also detected the presence of dominant Rf genes in their genetic background. The R-lines identified can be safely presumed to be strong restorers for consecutive A-lines they were crossed with. The study also identified a potential maintainer CN1039-9 for the A-line IR58025A. The maintainer line identified can be later exploited for developing new CMS lines.

Analysis of variance was conducted to determine GCV, PCV, heritability and GA of the genotypes with respect to all characters. Significant variation was observed in many traits among the genotypes offering scope for selection. Correlation analysis determined the nature of relationship among these characters. UPGMA studies revealed six major clusters and cluster I and II were the largest with maximum number of genotypes. The study identified that the varieties namely, Black Gora, Kalinga-2, Dudheswar, ARC 10086, IR-36, IR-64 and Nipponbare possessed good quality traits and high yield performance. The current study indicated that developing rice varieties for consumer acceptance with good grain quality traits along with high yield will be very useful in rice breeding and in selection...

Population structure and diversity analysis of Indica and Japonica rice genotypes. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 27 (1), 120–127 Eighty one rice genotypes were studied using 30 SSR markers and data obtained were analyzed using STRUCTURE software which classified the population into two sub groups or subpopulations, designated as subpopulation 1 and 2. Subpopulation 1 mostly comprised of 60 germplasms majority of which are Indica in origin, whereas subpopulation 2 mostly comprised of tropical and temperate Japonica subspecies. Cluster analysis was performed using UPGMA and Dendrogram was constructed which consisted of 4 clusters comprising of Indica accessions in majority and 3 clusters of tropical and temperate Japonica subspecies, thereby suggesting large diversity in the population.
